booker-t,
I am unfamiliar with the account you are referring to regarding Peter, so I am at a loss for how to go about showing any error in the elder's interpretation. I wish I could help with that one, but it is new to me.

i know this sounds like a "totally" stupid question and i don't mean to offend religious people but i was talking to two jw's elders the other day at my apartment.
they came by even though they know i am disassocated and don't want to go back to the wt.
they think they can convince me that they are the truth and i would go back.

Narkissos: A question booker-t might ask: suppose the WT is wrong on, say, 1914. Suppose a JW comes to disagree with the current WT stance on 1914. What will happen to him/her? So what lessons have been learnt from past mistakes?
Excellent point!
In the case of Peter, did he disfellowhip any who disagreed publicly with his view? Did he claim that it was Jehovah's Word spoken through him as the Channel of Communication (capitalized as an official title and everything)? What about Jonah? Did Nathan cast people off from their family and friends for not believing that David was going to build the temple?
The impacts of the thing spoken in the case of Witnesses is that it becomes indisputable doctrine, part of "the pattern of heathful teaching" and part of "the truth." Until it changes, publicly arguing against it or challenging it for Biblical grounds will get you disfellowhipped so fast you'll get whiplash.

Is Jesus a false prophet for his remarks regarding His own return in that generation?
Qcmbr,
I believe that the Preterist perspective holds that Jesus honored his word.

getting baptized should be between you and god, and the watchtower should bud out of your personal relationship with god, right?
The Corporation has already issued criteria that must be met by any "candidates" for baptism. After my earlier post I thought, "What an odd term for ones who are going to be baptized." I never thought it was odd before, but after posting that it did seem odd. I did some research on the word.
One definition of candidate: "One that seems likely to gain a certain position or come to a certain fate."
Other definitions:
Those who meet the predetermined criteria are candidates, the final criteria prior to baptism is the verbal contract with God and Corporation. Representatives of the Corporation have already been assured of compliance to Corporate standards and a representative of Corporate asks the questions that, when answered, create the verbal contract.

what would your views be on mormons?.
was there much incidences where jw's and mormons would ever catch eachother while going door-to-door?.
just curious cause both of you do it and wondered if there was ever any conflict between the two..... evanescence
Qcmbr,
No. I would not. And they wouldn't ask me to, so fortunately I wouldn't need to. (1 Corinthians 3:5-9)

Qcmbr,
I understand what you are suggesting, however the Israelites had only one means by which to test whether a prophet was true or false. That method is given at Deuteronomy 18:21, 22. Now, if a prophet is a prophet uttering words in God's name but does not speak of future events he or she cannot ever be proved false. But, ANYONE that speaks in God's name of a future event that does not come to pass is a false prophet. Whether they ever claim to be a prophet or not.

Um, unless I am mistaken (always possible) Christ sort of tossed the priesthood and its attached authorities out the window. I don't read anything in the Greek Scriptures that indicates I should be subjecting myself to any of the models of religious authority evident in Israel.

Qcmbr,
I don't believe anyone who claims religious authority over another human is doing so with Scriptural backing. I believe that I can Scripturally take the pegs out from under anyone on earth who lays claims to authority from God over other humans. Paul specified what the overseers were overseeing. They were to tend, or look after the flock. They did not have AUTHORITY over them, they had RESPONSIBLIITY toward them. After all, these aren't their sheep, are they? IMO, there is a BIG difference between Authority over and Responsibility toward.

i have been reading alot lately and not posting enough, but i have a situation that i would like some advice for.
i have been having doubts for some time now, and no longer believe the wbts have the truth.
my wife when she first heard of this dilemma, had some issues with it, we had a fallout, and we were seperated for some time.
Cori,
I am struggling with the same situation. My wife is attending fewer meetings than she ever has and is spending less of her energy on field servitude. I am very hopeful. She knows I have been asking my elders and the CO for answers and she knows they have not been answering. That is affecting her very deeply.
