i understand that there is an article which appears, to some, to indicate a softening of attitude regarding christmas.
i'm told that it is now ok for a jw wife married to a non-jw husband to participate in some family christmas activities as long as she doesn't regard this as an act of worship.. i would really like to have a copy of the exact wording.. many thanks!.
This PISSES me off! I was that JW woman married to an abusive unbelieving husband.
Guess what I got for refusing to go to Christmas dinner with his family, buy presents he put on a list and cook rice for birthday parties. I got locked in a closet; pushed against a wall; pushed down on the floor and kicked, etc. etc.
But I was told I was doing it for Jehovah. I was a martyr. And now they come out with this article! SHIT I AM PISSED! I want to go throw up now!

It's a numbers game. Now the pubs that deliver the rags get to count those rags and those RVs. I wouldn't mind a subscription. Been in my new house almost a year and haven't been visited once yet. And I'm itchin' to have a "bible" study in my new neighborhood where no one knows I'm an "apostate."

i read someone's commment about the pagan origins of pretzels, which i didn't know.
i'd like to share with my kids other items or customs that are also pagan in origin, like wedding rings and the wedding cake.
i want them to see that christmas isn't the only tradition with roots in pagan religion that have changed meaning over the years.. any others out there?
My personal two favorites are:
Circumcision and water immersion baptism were both practiced by pagan religions before they became Jewish and Christian.

recently in another thread, dannybear mentioned jim jones and the mass suicides at jonestown.
about two years ago when the issue of cults in france was a hot topic in ex-jw discussions, i became curious about jim jones and his followers.
i had seen the news reports and horrific footage, but i wanted to understand how a man could convince 638 of his adult followers to kill themselves and 276 children.. for me, jim jones's story is also close to home.
WOW! This is powerful stuff! What would happen if I printed this out and sent it to my sister? Think she might see the similarities. I think I'm going to buy the book tomorrow. Thanks for tipping us off to this!
my cousin, sharon, who died in september.......was disfellowshipped three years ago.
her brother is still a witness, and wrote a thank you card to an elder in the congregation here.
this elder and his wife came to visit sharon a few days before she died, and before she started to lose her ability to make sense when she talked.
Marilyn, your description of your cousin really had me laughing. No wonder he at least has some "hope" that his dead sister "paid the price" and thus might be eligible for a resurrection -- he's one of the "weak" ones. (laughing) If he were one of the "strong ones" like my husband's family, he would say, "Too bad too bad, no hope for a resurrection since she died unfaithful."
In my opinion neither view is better than the other. Both reveal a lack of Christian love. Your cousin is probably viewed as pathetic by most of his congregation for having such a view. And he is pathetic. Either be in or be out. Too bad he's IN but can't even make it to MS! How sad! His own friends must look down upon him. Imagine living such a sad existence with a former special pioneer wife who is now completely out and three kids all out of da troof! I think you should take this opportunity to set the poor guy free so he could have at least a few years of happiness while still on this earth.

I say: The same can be said of any other religion. And speaking of "attacking" belief systems, the Watchtower has been doing that its entire history not worrying about "collateral" damage.
That said, being a JW doesn't make a person more moral except in their own eyes. A person who wants to be "moral" will be moral no matter what religion they're in if any at all. It's the individual who makes those decisions and who gets credit, not the religion.

I think maybe the outsider is confused. Actually, it could be that the father made the son go in front of the congregation elders and confess to masturbation and then being relayed by a non-witness, it is made to sound like he went in front of the entire congregation. Either way, whether in front of the elders or the congregation, it would be humiliating for him.
