Which is worse: thinking or raping children?
by Mr Ben inwhich is worse: thinking for yourself or raping children?
most sane people in the world, whether religious or not would clearly say the latter was the worse, and worse by as large a margin as could be conceived.
unless, that is, you are a jehovah's witness.. in jehovah land, thinking anything contrary to the organisation is the worst of crimes.

Strong stuff and a terrible story.
A good point about appointments by the H/S , or not. I realised after a little while on a body of elders that it was balony to claim that H/S had anything to do with it.
Child abuse is awful, and your outrage is shared by us all, but it would be wrong to give the impression that the congregations are a seething mass of perverted passion. Their code of conduct and concience and rule keeping mentality would help to dissuade it.
lets not forget that this is a problem affecting all society, as our newspapers make us painfully aware. I am sure that the amount of abuse within the congs. is very much less than the world in general. The elders that I worked with are family men who would have no truck with such crimes.
Central policy may not want them to reveal details to the law , I have not been involved for a while so I cannot say
Where it happens though ,it must be exposed. i hope that the Bristol brothers get wind of it and take care.

LAST DAYS?
In the sense as used by the WT ?
NO! NO! NO!
Look at the masterful debunking of chronology easily found on the web.
and the "Signs of the times" - wishful thinking I believe . The WT would have you believe that the past was a golden time of peace and good neighbourliness whereas a simple look at history shows it was anything but that.
The comparisom has to be against not what you may want the world to be, but what it really has been in the past . I contend that then these times are not so critical by comparisom.
Do not let the fear get to you - it is all manipulation. -

"How can we even mention the UN without them knowing we've been searching the web for info against the WTS? Just wondering."
.................................................................I have just written a letter to the W T Society as an innocent enquiry about a newspaper article on October 8th "U K Guardian". They can't touch you for that

Mum was called on when I was five, I grew up within it, blew hot then cold a few times, stopped completely when I was about twenty.
But, this sounds really stupid - I felt out of place in the "World" did not make friends- institutionalised by the Org - went back to give some purpose to life. Did not believe it at first but after a while of study and meetings , it was great I really felt I had The Truth . we knew the secret of the universe ,in fact we knew the answer to everything!
I know better now ! -

A question about Jesus
by startingover inmy first post here, been lurking for quite a while.
this place has been a real help in my journey.. a little background...raised a jw from day one, 3rd generation, 3 grandparents of the annointed, father and mother gilead graduates, father always prominent in the org.
never really felt i fit in but played the game.

Hello Startingover
Let me join the club of people who said how much your experience mirrors our own
I am just"inactive"but the net has taught me so much , I also read C of C in secret ,had to get the library to call me at work.I think they thaught it was something really subversive!
I am sorry to hear of your trouble at home, we have the same troubles, my wife is just closed to the subject, afraid to question ,I guess but what the posters say is encouraging ,maybe even someone like her can turn.
Regarding the calendar I read some fascinating stuff by Stephen J Gould, when the Millenium approached. It did not challenge my faith in Jesus, just the Org and the chronology they use .I am with Unclepenn on the subject of Jesus. More evidence for him than most other historic charecters, and if he did not teach it,someone just as brilliant would have had to.
Take care, let us know how you get on.

God's Weapons !!!
by thinker ini think it is fair to say that whoever wrote genesis had a very limited scientific understanding of the world in which he lived.
most of nature was a mystery to him.
let us examine what he did "know"; namely, god lived in heaven, which was in the sky.

I believe the theory to which you refer is put forward by Verner Keller in his book "The Bible as History " in which he debunks a lot of Bible miracles and attempt to explain them by natural causes.
But, the manna came all year round wherever they were.Although it would not keep overnight, except on the Sabbath day, when it did.Manna did not come on the sabbath.Thinker
Interesting post, a theory full of ifs and maybes and assumptions. have you never considered the figurative content of some passages?
I do not know how much Moses or the original writer of Genesis knew about Metreology but nothing makes me doubt the authenticity of the writing written from a human standpoint, looking up to the sky etc.
Its easy to pick holes if you try hard enough but the Bible still holds upfor me. -

A New Guy from Chicago with a Story to Tell
by Reborn2002 infirst of all id like to say hello to everyone on this website, and to thank and acknowledge each and every one of you for your individuality, personal experience, and in some cases, commitment to truth.. having read some of the heartfelt topics and posts here have served to be a great encouragement to me, more than some could imagine.
my name is jason, and i am a recovering ex-jw.. i guess this would be an ideal time to tell my life story as an abbreviated version, so here goes.. i was "born into, or raised" in the organization.
my grandfather was an elder for 45 years, and served as one of the very first jw in the south chicagoland suburbs.

Hello Jason
Lets get back to the original post. Your story is so understandable to me.
Elders. They ignore me too. I can get away with being a total non believer and never having to explain anything, why? because they never ask, no body cares, I like to think that, poor elder as I was, I would have tried to reach a fellow "brother" not doing anything bar come along to some meeting ,obviously just accompanying his wife.
Pioneer Sisters. They are not always what they seem are they. I remember one in particular who both emotionally and phisically "screwed up" a friend of mineTake care, I hope this thread has encouraged you to keep posting. Believe me mate, we have all been there.

Study 16th December
by BluesBrother inone part of the watchtower study really got my goat!.
i know its not original thinking but , paragraph 17 of study article said .
"jehovah's longsuffering is lasting longer than some have anticipated, however that is no reason to give up, to do so would be tantamount to criticizing god for being longsuffering".

Who do they think they are! We anticipated the end because THEY taught us to believe it . The WT rammed home the message time and again -who would have thought in the early 1970s that we would be sitting here in the almost second year of the 21st century ?
They cannot get away with blaming us for failed expectations .
Anyway, my criticism is squarely of the Org.for leading us up the garden path - not criticism of our God who, truly did not indicate a day or an hour.
Perhaps the younger or newer people can be fooled, but they can't pass the buck all the time. -

Do you still think like a witness.
by sleepy inone of my customers asked me today whether i celebrate christmas and birthdays almost automaticly i was about to say no.. then i realised i'm not a witness anymore.. i didn't really want to go into a conversaion so i just said those things didn't bother me.. so what things are here stuck in our minds like that ,that are hard to get rid of?.
do you sill have a feeling arrmagddon might come , even though you don't mentally bleive it ,does it still effect you?.
have you realised yet that you are not going to live forever and in fact you will die?.
-
BluesBrother
Do I still think like a witness? - It is easy to do so ,especially if spend time in conversations with relatives who practice it - it is simple to slip back into mode .
Christmas ? I admit that I allow workmates to leave me out of it because I dont want to do it. Although I have got a small gift for a special friend without a qualm of conscience
JBean : I know how it feels to be really disappointed when I realised that I was not going to live forever, that the New World was a just a dream , and worst of all , I am going to get old before I die.
But what the hell? As someone hear said " We had better enjoy what we have got while it is here.
