thankyou very much for your interesting post lelolia. I have often wondered about the birthday thing. I don't see that there could possibly be anything wrong with it and have always maintained that JW's should view it as a matter of conscience instead of a ridgid 'NO!!!!!'

What? He's not in the truth???!!!!
by gerbils in2 1/2 years ago i met my non-jw boyfriend, and i received a shepherding call from two lovely elders who told me that i was mixing good with evil, and didn't i know the man i loved was going to die at armaggedon?
they left me in tears...not as though i left my boyfriend of course.
i've made sure that things like that don't get to me anymore.

Non JW woman met JW man--confused & have questions

There aren't meant to be different types of JW, but there are weak and strong ones. just because a person may carry a label of JW, it doesn't mean they don't have passions and desires. you can judge if he's a sleaze or not! If you see him again ask him about his faith, no doubt he will open up to you, and if he's got problems then he will need someone understanding to communicate with.

Completly faded? Not Df'ed or Da'ed just for the one's that faded!
by mkr32208 inhow did you know that you were completly faded?
i finally realized the other day that i was completly out, i think for the first time i really had evidence that i was out.
i was at a witness get together (wife still in so i'm allowed to tag along...) and a witness i didn't know from kentucky or tennessee or somewhere was talking to me and using the "terminalogy" and something i said must have cued him because he said "are you a jehovah's witness?

Hehe...I've noticed too that JW's do put on an act around other witnesses, suddenly turning the conversation around to service or the wonderful CO. I made a determined effort a few years ago to be completely up front with everybody. "Yeah, there are some good clubs in sheffield. University's great. did you go?" Just watch the shocked expression.

The system of privileges in WTS - any thoughts on how it works?
by Pole inwts has quite a few traits which are typical of totalitarian systems.
many of them have been demonstrated on this board (labeling, shunning, monopoly on truth, propaganda, indoctrination, polarization of reality etc.)..
there is one more aspect of the wts religion which can also be observed in most totalitarian systems and that is the system of granting privileges.

I think that the push for men in the congregation to reach MS/elder status is very powerful. It seems to me that if you are just an 'ordinary' man in the congregation it is assumed that there is something seriously spiritually wrong with you! My dad used to be an elder, and when he was, the other elders were very lovely to him and our family were put on a pedestal. when he asked to step down due to personal reasons, suddenly he was viewed by some as a drop out, a person to be pitied and looked down. Our family was put under a lot of critism...and you seriously would not want to hear the gossip that went round about dad's reasons for stepping down!
There are some kind lovely elders who are totally genuine and caring...very humble men. But there are some right gits too, who are so full of their own self-importance that they believe that they are above everyone else. In particular some P.O's!
I'd be interested to know why its so hard to remove elders who dont fulfill the criteria anymore??!!!

a little confused....
by gerbils ini've been brought up as a jw, and i am now 20 years old, am away from home at university and have an agnostic boyfriend.
not your ideal jw girl by any means!
all my jw mates are baptised now, and i've managed to hold off til now.

The 'Jesus was 30 before he got baptised' one is fantastic! I intend to use that one. I just don't feel that its fair for people to apply pressure over personal choice...and a big decision!!! In my opinion being able to get baptised under 18 is a little worrying anyway. It's around that age that most people start to have a proper think about things anyway, and if they're baptised when they decide that they don't actually believe it then it causes a ridiculous amount of problems! I feel bad for those people like Dy who this happened to. What happened exactly?

jw meetings and obedience to the society
by boy@crossroads inin what ways does each of the jw meetings play a part in instilling obedience to the mother organization?
or maybe put another way, how does each weekly jw meeting contribute to the overall jw mindset?.
this thought came to me whilst drifting in and out of the watchtower study this morning.. ministry school: helps jws strengthen their speaking skills for better defending their beliefs.

My house mate often gets involved in open discussion meeting with her church, where believers and non-believers question Christianity, and see if they can get any suitable answers. I think that it's a fantastic idea, and I wish Jehovahs Witnesses did it too...I have a huge catalogue of hot questions I need answers to!

hmmm....I wouldn't call myself brave! I'd say I was more of a coward...sitting and rocking back and forth on the fence.
But I can fully understand how much more difficult it is when your baptised! Urg. Thankyou :)

I've been brought up as a JW, and I am now 20 years old, am away from home at university and have an agnostic boyfriend. Not your ideal JW girl by any means! All my JW mates are baptised now, and I've managed to hold off til now. Until I was about 16 I never really questioned anything that I had been taught, but since the pressure to get baptised began to get strong I've been slowly realising that I know nothing at all! I believe there's a creator, and thats where I get stuck. I have this horrible feeling that I could be like this forever, never being able to progress any further, always going along to meetings so as not to upset my family, and never being able to bring myself to baptism like everybody expects. I refuse to get baptised just to satisfy other peoples expections...
I would be interested to know if there is anybody in a similar situation? Or anybody who has dealt successfully with it? Please help
