I had mine out when I was 14 - it was pretty ugly. I was very sick and ended up spending close to 2 wks in hospital until they finally sent me home. What bothered me most though was the lie. Before I went in for surgery, the doctor and m parents kept telling me it was no big deal - you'll go to sleep and when you wake up we'll bring you home - its only for a few hours. I would rather have known that when I woke up my throat would be in agony, I wouldn't be able to speak or eat and a day or so might be needed to recuperate in the hospital. Instead - I got the reassurance they thought they had to give me when all I really needed was on a scale of 1-10 how much will it hurt along with a healthy dose of honesty. My sisters had theirs out when they were 3 and 4 and were in and out, up and about in no time. sammieswife.

Tonsillectomies?
by BlackSwan of Memphis inmy oldest is having her tonsils and adenoids out on monday.
the doctor will also be maybe putting tubes in her ears if sees that theres a problem, as he will be doing some work in her ears during the same surgery.. i've read all the information they've given us, doesn't seem like a huge deal.. i'm wondering though how many have either had their tonsils out as children and remember the experience or how many have had children who have the surgery.. i would just like to know from others what i might be able to expect.. any input?.

What faithful JW's do you pity the most?
by OnTheWayOut inmany of us have family in the borg, we are anxious to get them out, .
we might be very angry with the borg.. but who among the jw do you really just pity?
is it elders, pioneers, retired folks w/o decent retirement?.

The children - and the adults those children become. They have no choice and their lives are forever altered by the life they are forced to adhere to. I also feel pity for those souls who are so brainwashed into following, that they have allowed their youth, their future and their families to become destroyed by the very religion that is supposed to save them. It's pathetic and sad. sammieswife.

At least one Elder has stood up and told a man to go to the authorities...I applaud him for doing that regardless of the reason he advised him to do it. It at the very least takes one piece of vermin off the street. sammieswife.

The Difference between being a Convert and being raised a Witness

Your question might also have included the question of wether being raised in that organization was considered weak or zealous. I think this has a tremendous amount of influence on wether or not a person remains a JW, gets baptized and what age, has those life experiences most have to give up and the course it sets for their life. Mulan, came from a less restrictive JW family environment whereas our family were zealots so as a child there was no sitting at home. Even as a young child you were expected to go out in service and spend your summer vacations that way except for the family vacations which were conventions. Free time was spent studying or else working part time at a job of some sort. Take it to the extreme and add into the mix, all those kids that were then home schooled so they would not be in 'bad' association with the worldly kids - mix in a rural residence and you can see the isolationist that perfects brainwashing has been achieved.

I see the difference glaringly in the one aspect of self-awareness. A JW child is raised to place the Watchtower first always - he understands that he is of little importance thus he gives up following any dreams, he gives up getting involved, he quells any desire for knowledge, he sets no goals, he finds his hope not in anything but a kingdom hall and his faith in nobody or nothing except the Society. sammieswife.

Help Me Understand Something-Education/Dating
by tarhillsblue inanyone that can help me understand this scenerio please explain.
i am relatively new in "the truth".
i am struggling with some logical things here.

This may sound egotistical, or even naive but someone please help. Where are all of the educated, single sisters in the congregation? I have 2 masters degrees and had began doctorate work. I just turned 30. I just am sort of baffled here. All I hear is that there are tons of single sisters in the congregation. But quite honestly I am not finding that to be the case. Specifically in the case of those that are young like myself, and having some form of a college education. Instead I am finding teeny boppers inviting me out to date, or women with 2 or more children with no mate looking for a husband. Those are the choices. Am I missing something?
Also can anyone explain to me why many of the young men in the congregation are still living at home with their parents? It is very admirable to have close family ties but we are talking about 24-30 year olds still living at home. Help me out. Clue me in. I am finding it difficult to develop a social network and find things in common with the young adults in the congregation. I got baptized a few years ago now. So I have wondered this for a while.
If you got baptized a few years ago then I wonder how it's escaped the notice of the Elders that you are continuing on with your education instead spending your time in service? You would also be aware that since college education is to be avoided that your liklihood of finding single, young, college educated women would be very limited. Surely you know that many of the young men live at home with their parents because the world will swallow them up and they're terrified of that! All those good looking worldly girls that only like to drink and have sex...tsk..tsk..tsk..better to savour the warmth and isolation of their family home and dream of the day that they might find their JW mate amongst the arms of the congregation. Find her, date her for 3 months, kiss her once and then get married. I'm not trying to be nasty at all - just curious - why would an apparently well educated, knowledgeable, young man hand over his freedom and his life to the Watchtower? sammieswife.

What Do People Hate Most About JWs???
by minimus ini think most "worldly" people consider jws a nusiance---especially on a saturday morning!
they hate being bothered by peddlers at their door.
some people can't stand the witnesses' smugness and self righteous attitude.

Beyond the nuisance factor - I find it's the arrogance, prejudice, hypocrisy and patronization. sammieswife.

How do Cults recruit and keep their members?
by The wanderer in<!-- .style2 {font-family: verdana; font-size: 14px; } .style5 {font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; } .style7 {font-family: arial, sans-serif; color: #1bad00; } .style9 {font-family: arial, sans-serif; color: #7b5d55; } --> how do cults recruit and keep their members?
it starts with learning something new that was not known before.
in the case of jehovah's witnesses, the individual is introduced.

There are experts that can totally relate, but have never been victims
Getting a bit off topic here for a moment - but I've often pondered this statement. I didn't bear children but I did raise one - thus I feel that I totally relate to the raising of the child but there is no way that I can totally relate to the birth process. I don't believe that someone who has not been the victim of a rape or attempted rape can totally relate to the victim's experience unless they themselves have had the experience. I believe that there is empathy, sympathy, compassion, knowledge and understanding at some level - but I'm not totally convinced that without some type of experience in a form of victimization, a person can relate. That being said - I do believe that a person who has suffered from abuse can take that experience and pull from it to totally relate to other victims wether that be in a cult (which is a form of isolation and abuse) or suffering any other form of abuse. Sorry for the hijack...sammieswife.
