We only had one in a decade, but I served coffee and some baked goods. No one in my congregation EVER turned down free food. It was actually a pretty light and easy-going evening.

WAS THIS A NO-NO FOR YOUR CONG. SHEPHERDING VISITS?
by juni ini don't know where the elders learned this one.
maybe it was local - i don't know.
but.... these were shepherding calls to build you up spiritually so therefore no serving of coffee or cookies were allowed.. was this true with your congregation's shepherding visits?.

I wish I had thought of disconnecting the doorbell. Good one! I had a newborn, a 2 yr. old, and a 3 yr. old when I was going through this, and they were constantly waking up one of the kids. I was a basket case! My golden rule is to never wake up a sleeping baby, especially when I've been up all night with her, and then the Witnesses would come and lay on the doorbell. I did put a "Do Not Ring Doorbell" sign up, but then they would do what I call power knocking. If I didn't keep the door locked, they would have just walked right in. So....I kept everything locked up tight. That did take the wind out of their sails, but many times they would still turn the doorknob to see if it was locked. Talk about gutsy!
I, too, always checked to see who was at my door before I answered. Alot of times the kids would ruin that plan by running to the window so they could be seen. Oh well.
Some days they would come over 2 times in the same day! That would really make me made, because I figured after the first time it was safe to go outside.
Now, after a few years, I kick myself for giving them so much power.

Another thing-when we found out the whole religion was a lie, I put a bumper sticker from FreeMinds.org on my mailbox. Since it says STOP WATCHTOWER ABUSE they keep as far away from that as possible! LOL
Of course, only do that if you are ready to be DF, (as we were), because that lil' ole' apostate sticker is gonna bring trouble!!!!

Wow, I really feel for you. I had the same problem-I was literally stalked, couldn't take the kids outside for a walk, etc. for a whole year. I swear they were just waiting around the corner for me to open the blinds in the morning. I was incredibly stressed, and then very angry. I was literally a prisoner in my own house.
I had the phone problem, too, but I never answered. Enough was enough.
We ended up having to put a No Trespassing sign on our house. I hate it, but it is effective. They know they are supposed to honor that. A No Soliciting sign will not work, as they reason that they are not selling anything.
They still kept driving around the block, but it stopped them from bothering me at the door constantly.

Did you buy new clothes for the Memorial?
by MsMcDucket ini was just wondering how many people went out and bought new clothes for the memorial.
did you feel like it was a festive holiday like easter or did you just feel like it was another meeting that you had to attend?

I did. I felt it was the one thing closest to a normal holiday, so I went all out for the whole family. Had a big meal at our house afterwards for everyone, etc.
Everything I did always felt it was fake, though. No amount of pretending could mask the niggling thought deep inside of me that it had fallen short. I was also tired of making pretend "special" and "present" days for my kids. Those felt fake, too.

Reputations
by Honesty indo the jw's in your community have an overall good reputation?.
are they generally known for helping their neighbors in times of need?.
are they known as people who contribute and give back to the local community?.

When I was in I was concerned about giving a fine witness and improving their reputation among my workmates, family, etc. Everyone around here just views them as wierd and an annoyance.
Now I am angry at how this religion's drones have smeared my own personal reputation when I left.

Um, I hate to butt in here, but I just wanted to add that I worked in our Wal-Mart setting it up to open to the public when it was brand new, and then for a year later. It was absolutely mandatory to do the Wal-Mart cheer in the morning. I'm told they still do it. This is company wide.
I was embarassed to tell anyone we did this, so perhaps others who work there won't admit to it, either. Just a thought.
