I was reading a post today about the kingdom songs we sang as JW's.

i was thinking about the kingdom songs we sang as jw's and was wondering about you posters out there that are ex-jw's or still jw's what was you all time favorite "kingdom song" or what was you all time horrible song that we sang from both songbooks (1966 songbook or the later songbook made in 1984 sing praises to jehovah.

my favorite song was song #119 in the 1966 songbook "keep your eyes on the prize".

i like this song because it made me feel that armaggeddon was coming fast and the "new system" would be here to give me the prize.

I remember once in an assembly they had arranged a group of sisters and brothers to stand in the platform to sing every song in that day just to show us how it was done. It was supposedly because the CO wanted to make sure we were singing "loud" praises to Jehovah. It was one of the dumbest thing I've ever heard and took part in.

When the song would start all you could hear was the ones singing from the platform since they were singing through the microphones. Almost everyone in the audience was looking at each other with a smirk in their faces, while they tried to immitate the ones that were supposedly showing us how to sing.

No. But if they want to know information or ask questions I will surely provide it. But I won't be forcing anyone to get out if they don't want to.

the received wisdom is that the internet has dramatically damaged the ability of the watchtower society to gain and retain followers.

there was a very eloquent article to that effect written some time ago by a commentator who attempted to buttress his argument with reference to the postmodern condition and the breakdown of metanarratives in todays secular society, nay, even the come-back for enlightenment notions of truth.

in the 1970/80s there were major challenges to the watchtowers theology (great crowd in heaven) and chronology (1914) in norway, alberta canada, dublin ireland and in the newyork bethel itself: but the damage caused by those involved in the dissent was limited because knowledge was dispersed merely through personal contact and minimal use of obscure publications that seldom met the eyes of witnesses innocent of the watchtowers doctrinal and chronological vacillations in any case.

To me the internet has been a very very powerful microscope. I was not only able to view the scratches in the "diamond" of the society, but It magnified it so well that I was able to see clearly that it was'nt a diamond after all. Just a labratory made piece of costume jewerly.

I guess the Theocratic School was of use afterall!

Just kidding, but I remember this being used on the school before when giving number 4's.

when you were going door to door, although you had the pure intention of teaching people what you taught was god's will, did you realize back then, that if they listened to you and accepted a bible study that you were also screwing up their lives and that they would suffer greatly by this?.

it was always in back of my mind.....

No, why should I? If someone decides to go to the meetings and become a witness its their choice.

What religions did you seek since leaving? Or not?

i'm curious how many people on the board have looked into other religions or spirituality groups since they've left the jw.. what have you looked into?

did you join anything else?

read up on any others?

When I left I didn't see the need to look for another religion. I didn't see the point of it and I still don't.

I know people (non jw's) who say they request a 1.00 donation for wt's and/or a book at the door. So I don't know how it really works I guess.

They don't request anything when going door to door. The way it was done was to tell the person that if they wanted to donate they could do so if they wanted and any amount they thought would be appropriate. If the person would not donate anything he or she would still get the literature.

Now on the Hall it was a little different. One time they had a local needs talk were the elder talked about the donation system. The elder tried to compare the literature to current magazines or books you would buy at a local bookstore. He said if you go to a book store to buy a bible, how much it would cost, and that's a way to kind of measure when donating for literature at the KH.

Windowless Kingdom Halls

some time back, i had a disagreement with my brother-in-law, who even though he has doubts about the witnesses, still wants to put on the cloak of being a believer for his mother's sake.

while he acknowledges the doctrinal errors and abysmal treatment of the flock by their elders, he doesn't want to assign a malicious, controlling motivation to it.

i told him that i believed the idea of not having windows in kingdom halls was part of the brain washing that occurs during meeting after meeting during the weeks, months and years.

This issue has been raised before, and honestly how many churches do you see with windows on them? This also depends on the location of the KH. All the kh's in Puerto Rico had windows and they were open all the time, you could see outside, animals like lizards and bats would actually come into the hall (pretty interesting when this happened). The KH I attended in Puerto Rico even had a double door in the right side that was always open.
