I think many (most?) people are cynical about religion, and with good reason. I do believe the JWs have special contempt for many (most?) people beyond normal religions. They rightly think JWs are crazy for not celebrating Christmas, refusing lifesaving medical care, preaching at people's doors, etc...................

un thingy
by zaphod ini've been looking at past posting about the un scandal and was wondering what the r&f dub knows about the situation.. have they all been fed the line about the library card or has there been no official announcement and been dealt with only if particular publishers bring the subject up?.
is it an issue that has caused disquiet in the congrgation or is it still not known to a great extent by members?.

How Do You Discern If Someone Is Telling The Truth or Lying?
by minimus inwhat signs do you look for in determining whether someone is really telling the truth, outright lying or possibly using "theocratic strategy"??
?
-
rebel8
In the case of dubs using theocratic strategy, notice if you ask a straightforward question and get an answer that dances around the subject instead of answering it directly. If you keep repeating your question and get the dance a few times, followed by a response, the response may be a lie.

Any parents out there who refused blood for their kids?
by rebel8 inif you are out there, i would really appreciate you sharing your experience with me.
i am an ex-jw with a serious disease that has required blood transfusions from time to time throughout my life.
when i was a child, my jw mother went to great lengths, not only to withhold transfusions, but to avoid needed preventative and emergency medical care for fear it may result in blood being forced upon me.

Wow, I am having some really powerful emotions right now after reading all of your responses. Thank you so much to you all for taking the time to respond. You are really helping me to see the issue in a different light.
Gmoney, you are right that doctors sometimes recommend blood when alternatives may be available. However, don?t forget that it?s JWs that inserted the words ?rush to blood? in your mind, and they are not known for their truthfulness. They are guilty of much medical misinformation.
There is an article on www.ajwrb.org from an anesthesiologist that speaks to this issue. He says that physicians readily recognize a patient in danger of dying from hypovolemia (loss of blood volume) and want to utilize the best treatment available rather than putting the patient in further danger while trying alternatives that are known to be of questionable value in a certain case. I have refused blood long after I left the dubs, on non-religious grounds, but I have done so with actual medical knowledge and awareness of the risks described to me by professionals rather than unschooled cult members?and also while continuing under the care of a skilled professional, complying with other treatment recommendations, and willingness to accept blood if the situation did not improve.
One of the things dubs love to parrot is that alternatives are available. That is only partially true. There are situations in which alternatives may be effective; there are many in which alternatives will not or are very unlikely to work. Alternatives do little to carry oxygen throughout the body, which is needed to keep the patient alive??not reasonable for some medical emergencies, such as mine. A person should always ask if a non-blood alternative is available IMO, and if not, ask why?.just don?t expect there are blood alternatives readily available to treat any and every situation, because that is far from true.
Happy Guy, what can I say? You are so right on many fronts. Very thought-provoking.
It must be that instincts are not present in everyone and weak in others. Looking back on other things my mother did, she was sometimes over-protective and sometimes seriously neglectful. I do believe she is brainwashed, but she does have a mind and uses it to rationalize and disobey the WTS on other issues?proving she is capable of independent thought?.part of this has to be her own issues and can?t be blamed on WTS totally.

NY proposed law requires reporting sex abuse
by rebel8 ini came across this and thought it was of interest.
unfortunately, it only would require reporting the crime if it was witnessed, but it's a start.. .

They do cling to this clergy-penitent thing (ecclesiastical privilege, I think). If this law goes through this will absolutely kill them to report these things.
Have there been instances where JW "clergy" witnessed sex abuse of a child and failed to report it? This law only applies if a person actually sees the crime being committed....IMO the law is a start but much more is needed.
To all: I've read a bit more on this topic....apparently other states have similar proposed laws...check Google and write your rep...

how can you stay?
by zaphod in.
speaking as someone who believed it all right up until about a year after i was df'd i just cannot understand the reasoning of people who don't go out on field service, don't go to meetings, don't participate or believe and still stay in the organisation.. i know that it is hard to leave, it's made to be hard, but some of the postings on this site make me think that it must be harder still living a lie and keeping up the pretense.. if you don't believe, why would you want to conform to all the petty rules and subject yourself to men that you don't believe have any authority.. i really do hope that as soon as possible you can all take a deep breath and finally be true to yourself.. zaphod

It's actually not that simple r8. Fear of change applies to those that have nothing to lose.
That's the way it would be in a perfect world. I've counseled many patients who fear change in itself, even if they have everything to gain by making the change, and nothing to lose by changing.
A friend of mine is obese and has multiple health problems and b-i-g personal problems because of it. She overeats and says she does not even enjoy the food. She does not binge or exhibit any behaviors that would indicate she is addicted to food either. She just doesn't want to change because she's afraid of the "unknown". (She's in her late 30s and is a virgin because of her weight--lives w/her parents because of loneliness and does nothing an adult normally does to live an independent life....losing the weight would remove the excuse to move forward.)
I realize fear of change is not the only reason a person would have for going to the kingkong hall even though they know it's not the troof. It is one reason, though....I think a lot of current dubs cling to it because of fear of change.

Would you contribute to expose the Watchtower?
by nicolaou injost tossing an idea about.
would anyone be willing to make regular contributions to an 'exposure fund'?.
it wouldn't be a 'fighting fund', we couldn't hope to compete against watchtower finances or its legal department in that way.

rebel8
Yes I would....but my criteria for contributing to anything is some type of credible information publicly available regarding use of funds.

Alcoholism - a disease or a choice?
by Sirona inalcoholics anonymous claims that alcoholism is a disease.
somehow i think that is just a way of excusing the person from the responsibility that they chose to drink and they chose to let it become an addiction.. what do you think?.

My answer to your question is: neither. It is an illness, IMO.
Things alcoholism has in common with a disease:
1. pathological condition
2. presents a common set of symptoms
3. tends to respond to a common treatment regimen (abstinence + therapy)
Yet a disease is a pathological condition of the body, according to medical dictionaries. Although a person with an illness may suffer just as much as a person with a disease, an illness is not measurable in the body nor is it caused by the body. That is not to say there are no physical factors playing a role in the illness's development. Genes have been shown to be an influencing factor, though not a direct cause. The direct cause is still unproven.
