Good point. Strange that JWs tend to go into poorly paid, part time work (as many have pointed out on here), as there is no point in a ''future'' in this ''System'' - by the same token, I always wondered why those who had piles of cash didn't just share it amongst the Society where it could do the most good - after all, the END is at hand.

were you more 'materialistic' when you were a witness???
by chuckyy init was my experience when a jw that many focussed their lives around...having good holidays...having nice cars (some with private plates)...having perfect houses etc etc.
it all seemed very materialistic to me.
totally the opposite to what was being preached from the platform.

How long have they been keeping records for?
by inquirer insorry with all these threads, but this is something that i detest!
flaming records!
:(

Lol - don't know which thread to respond to. I was unaware that records were kept for so long - after all, if someone commits a CRIME (unless it is very serious), it is ''spent'' after 5 years.
I agree with other comments I have read - that Elders (because they have no REAL authority), like to create some for themselves - making them feel powerful - and even if just ONE member of the Congregation is in awe of them, it reinforces their Authority and position.

How I broke away
by pennycandy inthis is the story of my last bout as a witness.
nothing extraordinary.
probably not interesting to most, but it amounts to the biggest change to my life i've ever made.

Can someone take me through what it means to start/do a "study"?
by wordlywife inwhen i attended with my husband, (i am not jw, he is over 20 yrs.
) i was asked many times who i was studying with, are you studying, etc.
i didn't know what they meant, husband never pressures me with this kind of questioning.

Cynical here wordlywife - but having a study means the JW chalks up one hour on their timesheet while eating all your biscuits.

congregational cliques
by chuckyy init was my experience during my 13 yrs as a jw that congregations usually had a social clique.
in other words, there would be a group of people in a congregation that would only associate (and sometimes only go out on field service too) with people within that social clique.
if you were in the clique, fine.

Yep - Upside / Down, you have it there - remember being at school during games lessons? All the boys were on the field, (or girls when it was Hockey or Netball) and 2 were chosen by the teacher to make 2 teams - in turn they chose from the remaining kids who they wanted on their team ? Ring a bell with anyone ?

I was told 1975 - which, upon that year drawing to a close, changed to 1976 (and I was young etc - most of you will identify with how I felt, so no need to go there) - and lately I have mentioned this ''1975 Prophesy'' to a JW, and they deny that The Organisation ever predicted this year!!

Women in the congregation
by fairchild inthe fact that women are not allowed to address the congregation directly is something that really bothers me.
is there a bible scripture, indicating that such should be the case?
furthermore, something as simple as passing a mike cannot be done by a woman.

TheEdge
Many Congratulations fairchild - and it's also nice to see that some Congregations are moving with the times (an oversized hat instead of a napkin - that's QUITE a big step).
I agree with Under74, I think the elders (mostly, not all) generally have something to prove.
