Gotta give the guy the credit...this was taken from Matt Groening's "Life In Hell" comic strip, a more bitter, funnier precursor to "The Simpsons."

The Elder Bag. Going the way of the Dodo?
by Open mind inanother time & place.
20-25 years ago in a conservative "god's country" us state.
a look around the kingdom hall could easily identify the theocratic pecking order.. .

My elder dad had an elder bag for years, left, and I adopted it at 18. Found lots of juicy JC notes inside too.

Did You WANT To Talk To Disfellowshipped People?
by minimus indid you at least want to say "hi"?
or did you avoid them like the plague?.

When I was younger I thought DF'd people were the most evil people in the world. I was scared of them.
Then when I was a teenager I went to a friend's graduation, and her DF'd brother was there. We were all carrying on afterwards and he was just standing quietly to the side. I felt so guilty...he was a human being after all, and didn't seem to have fangs or anything. So I said "Hi" to him and introduced myself, and he was the nicest guy. But I was around his JW parents and others so I shied away a little.
Then my best friend got DF'd and we hung out together every day until the announcement was made, but afterwards had no contact, me being a good JW and all.
So I was just off and on so much over the years...I wanted to talk to them but was afraid of men, of breaking the rules, of being found out.
Now I have a couple that I keep in touch with because they have been such good friends over the years. And of course plenty of friends who (according to the rules of the game) "should" be DF'd but are off on a "technicality" because they have faded successfully.

Wow. That guy is either blind or deluded.
I call the JW's a "high control religious group" instead of a cult, but that may be just a matter of semantics.

He says he can only be my friend...
by Newborn in...for now.... i'm not sure i can be his friend, but we agreed to watch a movie together again on sunday.
he apparently wants to have contact with me but it's up to me if i want it under these circumstances.. i think it's too soon to say after only two dates, but he's obviously scared to encourage me or promise me more than he can give at present.. but friendship can develop to something else can't it??
i know he likes me a great deal!.

I think it's very hard for a man and woman to be "just friends" when one has feelings beyond that that aren't reciprocated. And I've been the one with the feelings. It ain't fun.

The NON THANKSGIVING turkey stuffing and cranberry dinne (Yeah right)
by Belly ini find it funny how my over zelous jw parents who talk so poorly of the world and there pagan traditions, somehow magically end up eating a turkey dinner on freakin thanksgiving.
but of course, god forbid anyone call it thanksgigving thats outrageous.. dont they see how ridiclously stupid they look?
it just go to show how a cult can brainwash a person.. anyone else have similar experiences?.

WTWiz...
That was the worst. I did Thanksgiving service once and it was miserable, disturbing people on the biggest family day of the year. It was embarrasing. So much for "making your reasonableness known to all men."

How do elders step down?
by BlackSwan of Memphis incatching up on some of the posts a thought came to mind..... .
if an elder or ms wants to step down, what is the process?
can it be as simple as saying "i need to step down" without having to supply an explanation?.
-
Tristram
It's not complicated, but it's not easy. They don't want to lose an elder because that means more work for the others! And yes, an explanation is needed, not even an "I need to step down to focus on my family and their well-being." A specific reason or problem will need to be given. Then it will be "tabled" for a while in hopes that the elder will come around. If the elder holds out, the CO will need to sign off on the resignation.
Just what I've seen.

Did the JW's really get treated better in north Ireland?
by highdose ini remember hearing about all the trouble there, and how the power factions left the jw's alone though because they knew they were nutral.
now that i'm questioning the rubbish i've been taught all my life, i'm starting to question it too.
it certainly would not fit in with everything i've heard that went on there.. any ideas?.

Tristram
I remember speaking with a Witness couple from Northern Ireland (years ago, mind you, the details are a little hazy) and they said that they were harrassed quite a bit by members of both sides of the conflict because they wouldn't take sides. Never anything physical or abusive, just given some grief. They also said it was basically a no-no to go out after dark in some sections because there would be trouble.
