  1914.... Quotes that mislead the reader

  one of the main ways the watchtower is able to mislead people is by impressing them that they actually fortold the events of 1914. they point to magazine articles and simply make stuff up in order to 'prove' that years in advance they announced that christ would return in 1914. typical is this quote: why, then, do the nations not realize and accept the approach of this climax of judgment?

  it is because they have not heeded the world wide advertising of christs return and his second presence.

  since long before world war i jehovahs witnesses pointed to 1914 as the time for this great event to occur.

  Drew, if I remember correctly, that same paragraph has some manner of statement castigating non-Witnesses for failing to note the 'separating work going on before their very eyes since 1914'. Of course, now that the teaching has been altered, it would appear that the nations were not so very stupid; only the Society was stupid for insisting (until October 1995) that a separating work had been taking place...

  Has the Watchtower changed its mind or did I miss something?

  in all my years as a jw, my understanding had been of wtbts belief, was that the 144 000 were resurrected in a 'twinkling of an eye' and never actually experienced death.. did i understand wrongly or has the watchtower changed its mind......again?.

  I suspect the "new light" will be this: Governing body members could be members of the "great crowd" rather than "anointed". If the "faithful & discreet slave" can communicate from beyond the dead, you don't really need any living on the earth, do you?

  I'm not so sure of this. If memory serves, the WTS already stated in the Revelation book that the 24 Elders (i.e. the resurrected members of the 144 000) communicate with the "John Class" (i.e. anointed Christians still on Earth) -- emphatically NOT with members of the "Other Sheep". Or was that teaching among the seventy changes to be made in the Revelation book?

  in the january 1 2007 wt, there is the following quote in one of the articles regarding the "first resurrection" (there are a few other posts on that article already):.

  it seems that resurrected ones of the 24 elders group may be involved in communicating of divine truths today.. this may be the most significant sentence in the article (haven't read it in its entirety yet).

  i don't recall seeing anything like it in print before.. seems to be laying the groundwork for a "flash of new light", to be exposed probably whenever the last of the 3 old-timers hanging on (barr, barber, jaracz) drop off:.

  though Pastor Russell has passed beyond the veil, he is still managing every feature of the Harvest work.

  This is especially rich because it was written and published in 1917, when (according to current WTS doctrine) "Pastor" Russell was dead and not yet resurrected.

  CHANGE IN RESURRECTION DOCTRINE?

  ok, this is from the january 1, 2007 craptower.

  page 25 is the study article called "the first resurrection---now under way".

  it's too boring to type all the stupidity written, but here's a brief synopsis of where they come up with the brainiac idea that the first resurrection occurred in 1918 onwards:.

  I'm calling "out-of-bounds" on their attempts to moderate their previous dogma. I remember something regarding the former teaching that the resurrection had unequivocally begun in 1918. In the Paradise Lost book, page 192, paragraph 30 it stated in no uncertain terms:

  "One of the many enlightening truths that God now gave his witnesses was about the members of God's spiritual nation who had died physically. This was in 1927. In that year the witnesses understood that the dead spiritual Israelites had been raised in 1918 to life in heaven with Christ Jesus. It was an invisible resurrection, of course."

  Since the Society stated that it was God himself who gave them the teaching, they are in no position to repudiate that teaching.

  Also, if memory serves, in the mid-1970's the Organisation disfellowshiped dozens of Witnesses for failure to believe that the resurrection had begun in 1918. (possibly documented in Apocalypse Delayed.)

  there is some pretty big lies in this article and i'd like to get my hands on a scan if possible.

  i actually ordered the 04' bound volume but it never showed up and then i stopped attending meetings.

  Not only is the article itself relatively recent, but that gem regarding their supposed pre-1914 "calculation" was re-used even more recently: in the Examining the Scriptures , 14. September 2005 (!)

  Paul's "full gospel" did NOT mention 144,000...

  from reflecting on what paul writes in his letters, it is obvious he had never taught anything like the wts doctrines concerning the little flock (144,000) or the slave class, or any other unique jw gospel concept.

  yet he was clear that he was preaching the entire gospel everywhere.. i picked out the following verses (you can find more but these are the most obvious) to show that 1) paul said his authority for the gospel he preached was given by god; 2) that he preached the gospel fully; and that he condemned any person or angel who preached a different gospel.

  have you ever noticed, then, that though paul clarified the gospel in all of his letters in a variety of ways, the odd doctrines of the jws/wts were never once mentioned by paul?

  The 1995 WT refutes the Society's own doctrine re: only 144 000 going to heaven.

  wt95 08/01 page 11 paragraph 8:

  8 When Israel rejected and killed His Son, Jesus Christ, God finally rejected her. So no longer was that Jewish nation a figurative wife to Him, nor was He the Father and Teacher of her wayward sons. (Matt. 23: 37,38) However, Israel was only a typical, or symbolic, wife. The apostle Paul quoted Isaiah 54: 1, which speaks of a "barren woman" who is different and distinct from "the woman with the husbandly owner," the nation of natural Israel. Paul reveals that anointed Christians are children of the "barren woman," whom he calls "Jerusalem above." This antitypical figurative woman consists of God's heavenly organization of spirit creatures. -- Galatians 4: 26,27. (end of quote).

  The scripture thus indicates (using the WTS' own interpretation of the 'women') that the number of anointed Christians exceeds that of fleshly Israel. The cumulative number of natural Israelites between the Exodus and the coming of Christ Jesus was in the many tens of millions; therefore, many more than 144 000 are spirit-anointed Christians.

  Do we have Scriptural precedent for taking such a strict position? Indeed we do! Paul wrote about some in his day: "Their word will spread like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of that number. These very men have deviated from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already occurred; and they are subverting the faith of some." (2 Timothy 2:17, 18; see also Matthew 18:6.) There is nothing to indicate that these men did not believe in God, in the Bible, in Jesus’ sacrifice. Yet, on this one basic point, what they were teaching as to the time of the resurrection, Paul rightly branded them as apostates, with whom faithful Christians would not fellowship.

  This is most fascinating. When the F&DS was supposedly appointed in 1919, the Watch Tower Society was still teaching that the Resurrection had begun in 1878 -- a teaching not altered until 1927 -- and which teaching the WTS now rejects as false. Does it not bugger the imagination to believe the Lord appointed over all his belongings an organisation that (by its own published standard) would be 'rightly branded apostate, with whom faithful Christians would not fellowship'?
