no, when i left it was basically because i realized that i didn't believe/didnt care about the bible. i had noticed some innacuracies sure but my eyes were not really opened to the flat out deceipt and BS of the org until I researched them on the web a few years ago.

WHY do they stay?!?!
by Pwned ini just dont get how people can stay in a religion that constantly changes the "truth".
never mind the scandals, that is a seperate issue.
but the foundation of a religion is its doctrine, how can you believe an organiztion that constantly changes it.

How often did you brag about... and validate your own existence based on... your family's long legacy in "the truth"? "
Thats funny cause even before I realized that I didnt really want to be a JW I despised that expression, it always seemed so arrogant to me and it made me cringe when people said it. why couldn't they just say, i've been in the org, or i've been a jw for x # of years?

I dont even want to know how much money my dad was donated but if I were to guess I would say at least 100K over the last 20 yrs and that is being conservative, and we were never wealty, in fact he had to declare bankruptcy once.
I remember 9/10 times that they had one of those service meeting - needs of the congregation talks (you know the ones where the time slot in the KM is open for whatever the elders feel is neccessary, do they still have those what with all the clamping down and scripting of everything) it would be about donating more. I'm pretty sure our congregation even missed a few payments, it was in the ghetto and the Spanish speaking halls tended to be a lot poorer than the English speaking congregations.

Especially people like elders, bethelites etc, there is no way that the org can slip some big changes by them, how do you rationalize staying. it blows my mind.
elders/former elders, what do you think?

A 1914 generation question
by Pwned ini was around in 1995, barely, but i dont remember any talks or articles where the new light about the generation of 1914. did they change w/o coming right out and saying so,or was there a talk.
especially in regards to the mission statement or whatever in the awake, did they make an announcement or did they just hope no one would notice?
i just cant believe that there wasnt a mass exodus after that, my family never mentioned the change to me, i didnt even know til years later on this site.

i remember all those talks too, and the point being made about you had to have been old enough to understand, it was definitely not like the 1975 thing where they perhaps never actually put it in writing. not only did they put it in writing it was the mission statement of the freaking Awake, it was the thesis of their indoctrination book "Live Forever", it was the basis for recruitment and retention!!! when i was a kid and would say something like when i graduate hs, get married etc. my sister or other older people would laugh (genuinely i might add) and say the A will come long before you graduate. well i graduated 10 yrs ago. the miracle is that their wasnt a mass exodus, it goes to show how deep their scam runs i guess. i mean if you can change the cornerstone of your religion without the majority even blinking its not much of a leap to Jonestown is it?

great article! I cant believe my parents can be so blind. my father is an extermely intelligent person (Phd Engineer), it is just unfathomable to me that how he can justify all this in his head. he has been an elder for 20 yrs so its not like he may not have noticed. i would love to ask him about the change in the Awake statement. It just drives me crazy, especially having to bite my tongue when they preach to me, but as I said on another post I'm too afraid of the negative repurcussions with bringing any of this up. i once asked my sister something pretty tame like dont you ever have doubts and my father was livid. thanks for all the replies

NancyDrake- lol, even now when something really scares me i start to say Jehovah over and over, if i told my mom she'd be like see you know its the truth but i guess its just like an automatic response to being scared. its funny though, i get embarrassed with myself when ever that happens and then it makes me laugh.

lol, i'm always tempted to ask my elder father questions about things like this but i feel like i am walking the fine line between them being completely normal with me and being shunned and the latter would be too hard on my mother and i want my kids to know them so i've always refrained.

I just cant believe that there wasnt a mass exodus after that, my family never mentioned the change to me, i didnt even know til years later on this site. although it was pretty obviuos that most people who were old enough to have been around in 1914 were pretty much dead, i just figured as long as there is 1 or 2 alive they still had hope.
