New OM book: Trusting the faithful slave is full of loaded language
by truthseeker inwhy trust the faithful and discreet slave.
our trust in "the faithful slave" is also manifest when we support the organization with our material contributions.
three more keywords here: trust, manifest, material contributions.

Matthew 24, the chapter refers to not one, but two slaves.
Q. Which of the two slaves had a preconceived idea of a certain time in which the master should arrive?
A. Not the faithful slave. The evil slave could not have felt the master was delaying unless he was expecting him in a certain time period. The faithful slave doesn?t seem to have any thought for when the master might return, he simply serves faithfully. I don?t believe the ?meat in due season? represents anything but obediently caring for fellow servants.
Q. Which slave felt the Master was delaying and began acting as if he had some authority over fellow servants?
A. The unfaithful slave did not say with his mouth that the master was delaying, it is ?in his heart? he feels the master is delaying, so he began acting as if he ran the house. Instead of simply providing food at the right times, he began chastising fellow servants as if he had any authority over them, when he had not been given such authority.
Q. Which slave assumed a superior position over other servants?
A. The very people he was supposed to humbly serve he considered himself to have a superior position over. As for eating & drinking with drunkards, doesn?t drunkenness in the Bible often refers to drunk in power or self-importance (eg Isaiah)?

I hope this memorial doesnt backfire ...........
by fleaman uk inwell, ive decided to go tomorrow night after all.not to my local cong but another one in the city where i have a very good friend and a few distant family members.i dont agree with much of the orgs teachings or promotions, but i do believe in jesus and really just have a very, very powerful urge to pay my respects to him.. i have been telling my "worldly"girlfriend about the religion and naturally, she is quite interested as this was part of my life since an early age.. blow me down she really wants to come with me!so when she walks into the hall tomorrow and gets a very warm welcome it will possibly shock her, after some of the stranger stories i have told her about the faith(vague stories including no xmas, disfellowshipping,no after school activities etc).i have told her that the welcome she receives will be warm and imho genuine too.she is quite a spiritual person anyway and will enjoy the occasion.. my worry would be that she will enjoy it too much and go to a follow up.it is quite probable.she has never had anything to do with jw,s before, till going out with yours truly .. i,m interested in your comments?.
thanks for listening.

I'm one to talk, I'm going to my first ever memorial with my friend and his family, and I've been told by people on this site not to partake. Until this week I thought some would partake. See my thread of a couple of days ago "memorial advice please".
I am reluctant to recommend any church or denomination, as I do not attend any, but there are many many denominational and non denomination congregations who do it as Jesus taught. Perhaps look on internet for christians who you may have common beliefs with. I know that many worship more in line with 1st century followers than JWs, but I'm not a good example to follow.
I still have doubts and have not attended Christian congregations regularly for more than 20 years, and the last time I drang the wine & ate the bread was at a Seventh Day Adventist "Central Hall". From what I've heard almost identical to the JW service, except those of us who had been immersed partook. A word of warning. It was the adventists who taught CT Russell many of the WTS doctrines including 1914, etc etc.
Good wished for the service, for me it will be a new experience.

Heaven's Gate leader was ex-JW? Mass suicide was 8 yrs ago today........
by WingCommander ini was just reading that the heaven's gate cult in california mass suicide was 8 years ago today.
i was reading some quotes from their so-called prophet applegate from a videotape he had made at some point.
he is talking about the end times, etc, and mentions 1975, an odd coincidence if i ever saw one.

From reading Watchtower publications it appears that for nearly 50 years the Watchtower leadership, in their role as ?prophet?, heralded that the invisible presence of Christ began in 1874. They were still teaching this in 1929, fifteen years after even the 1914 date. It seems that for decades they also believed and published the following:
- Christ?s kingdom rule began & fall of
- the last days began in 1799
- resurrection of the anointed in 1881 (?fall? ie Autumn)
- harvest would run from 1874 to 1914
- destruction of all human institutions & ?s complete destruction in 1914 or 1918
By the mid 1930s the official dates for key events were moved up as follows:
Start of last days
17991914Christ?s presence
18741914Christ?s kingdom?s active rule
18781914Beginning of resurrection
18781918 -

Hi,
If you are keen to pay your respects to Jesus will you be obeying his commandment to all His disciples, eat, drink...do this in remembrance of me? If not, there are other Christian congregations where you could do what Jesus taught.

memorial advice please?
by jaffacake ini've been invited to a memorial on thursday.
i'm currently unsure of my beliefs (somewhere between agnostic and christian, with an interest in science).
i have been baptised twice - catholic by sprinkling, and seventh day adventist by immersion - and have partaken of the bread & wine in both religions (although come to think of it, the catholic priest always kept the wine for himself).

In search of Christian freedon, by R Franz, has a photo of the N.Y. Bethel Xmas party 1926, with Judge Rutherford at the head of the table, the room is full of Xmas decorations, presents etc. Interesting that was 7 years after supposedly being appointed as God's organisation. I'll try to scan in a day or so when scanner fixed.

Someone mentioned the legal position. It was also once suggested that's why they changed the baptism questions to include the "spirit directed organisation". Not sure I understand legal implications?
