it can't be both light and dark at the same time etc..)
I like that comment. It makes me consider how light would have no meaning without the existence of darkness. Same goes for good & evil, etc etc.

Qcmbr,
I think you are right, I don't think we're that far apart, perhaps it does just come down to word definitions & wrestling with apparent paradoxes.
You sure got me thinking again though.
i always thought, when reading the bible, that the commandment "thou shall not kill" made no sense.
after all, the god who supposely gave it commanded his own people to kill.
so i wonder, did that god actually mean, "thou shall not murder?
Never thought I'd ever say this, but the more I read how folks react to the Old Testament, the more I recognise that perhaps the Catholics seem to have the best understanding of the OT, and more to the point, its place in the post-Messiah world, and its relationship with the New Testament.
Christ summed the OT up in a sentence, so humankind could hopefully move forwards, not back to the bronze age.

Matt 22:29
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Q, Perhaps we should both take a look in the mirror?
Jer 32:17
17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, [and] there is nothing too hard for thee:
Q, Just an expression of awe, that you and fundamentalists appear to take literally and out of context. Here's another for you...Job 42:2 "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted."
Mosiah 3:17(lds)
17 And moreover, I say unto you, that there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.
Q, You don't expect me to recognise that one do you?
Rev 19:6
6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Q, Just looked that up, and yes its there in the Diaglott - but that word is not in the Greek interlinear section! It just says almighty.
Matt 24:30
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Q, Lots of things have great poewr & glory but that is not the meaning of onmipotent!
John 17:5
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Q, I'm not arguing about Gods immense power and glory!
May I comment further by referring to 2 central Biblical doctrines: God created everything without exception (I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I the Lord, do all these things - Isaiah 45:7) The second is that God wills good (Every good & perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights - James 1:17)
Some things are impossible for God - It is impossible for God to lie - Hebrews 6:18; He cannot disown himself [Christ] 2 Tim 2:13 There seem to be necessities of the Divine nature, theologians put it "God is necessarily what God is". We also learn that God Is Love - 1 John 4:8.
The Bible does not speak clearly of creation out of nothing, in either creation account. It speaks of God's spirit hovering over the dep - what does this deep symbolise? The Bible does not say this deep (power of chaos) was created by God. There seems to be much metaphor in Scriptures that point to the fact that conflict & destruction, with possibility of failure, is somehow essential to development and creation. But once excellence is achieved, it can eventually be enjoyed without conflict.
All things exist 'in Christ' - in the mind of God so perhaps the possibility of conflict, opposition, destruction and chaos exist by necessity in any created universe containing free, rational creatures. God necessarily creates the destructive powers, but intends that they be opposed and eventually defeated by the renewing & reconciling power symbolised by Christ, the eternal wisdom of God.
I still say the Bible, in its original text, does not say or teach that God is omnipotent, but I make a technical point, not to diminish the power & glory. I think the Bible teaches so much more than what its actual words say, when broken down to texts. I don't believe we can understand the nature of God. But we can try to meditate on more spiritual meanings of scriptures, rather than getting hung up on literalistic interpretations.
at this weekend's toledo convention a young woman was interviewed.

It would be funny to watch the reaction of a normie having to sit through an afternoon at a dub convention. I would think it would just freak the hell out of them.
I once went to a KH (this years Memorial) and it freaked me out - all those Stepford husbands made my skin crawl. And they seemed to think I was impressed! I could see straight through the veneer!
i didn't see the person, but my husband told me about it.
glad this weekend is over, i can't believe people want to go to these things and enjoy them.
it was torture for me, but then i'm worldly.
Worldly wife
How is your step daughter? I may have missed the outcone of the problems with the elders. Hope she is okay.

Just wondering...
My suggested answers:
Oh for an ounce of humility occasionally.....
i remember when i started studying with the witnesses back in 1987, two brothers sitting at a table in a restaurant during morning field service break told me that i was a genious.
i asked them why they would say such a thing?.
they said, "because you were able to see what others didn't see".... what they were refering to was that i, like every other witness, found the truth, where as the vast majority of people were lost in false beliefs and in the wrong religion.. i was just starting out as a dub, so they were encouraging me with nice words.. well, i guess that there are many geniuses here, since many found their way out of the watchtower.... .
JWs must think I am as thick as two short planks, because from day one I have been an opposer.
I had read CofC and ISoCF before meeting any JW other than my newbie pre-baptism JW friends. Those 2 books must have removed my brain. Doh!
well, its been a while since i was made a unbaptized publisher.
now my hand is going to be forced and i will have to be baptized by the end of the year.
my gf wants my decision very soon, like the next couple of days.
Buck,
Thanks for listening. May I suggest you do some deep research into this organisation. I still don't think you appreciate what you are associating with.

Perhaps the Bible isn't correct? Do you think, maybe, just maybe, it could have been tampered with?
Robdar, Or alternatively that we are just terrible at trying to understand what it really teaches, in my view it teaches the opposite of what millions of religious people believe, on most doctrines. Perhaps it is our childish, literalistic belief that it is verbally inerrant, which it doen not claim to be at all.
Could anybody tell me where in the Bible it says that God is omnipotent?
Right again, it does not. In fact there are scriptures that clearly indicate the opposite. But these are the Scriptures that many Christians prefer not to read, and pretend they don't exist, because they spoil our modern man made relifgious doctrines.
