  Unfreezing is the first step in eliciting behavior and developing a belief system that facilitates the long-term management of a person. It consists of attempting to undercut a person's psychological basis for resisting demands for behavioral compliance to the routines and rituals of the reform program. The goals of unfreezing are to destabilize a person's sense of identity (i.e., to precipitate an identity crisis), to diminish confidence in prior social judgments, and to foster a sense of powerlessness, if not hopelessness. Successful destabilization induces a negative shift in global self evaluations and increases uncertainty about one's values and position in society. It thereby reduces resistance to the new demands for compliance while increasing suggestibility.

  What is facinating to me is Schein's description of the 'Destabilization of identity' process, in view of the JW experience.

  Do dubs intentionally mess up other people's holidays/birthdays?

  mine does.

  goes way out of her way to stir up trouble, conflict, and manipulate the former and non-dub relatives into not having a nice holiday.

  goes to extremes to do so, and is at it again, right on cue..

  The first and last time they messed with a holiday (after we began celebrating again) was a Mother's Day. We were new parents, so I was looking forward to a nice family day. DH had to leave that evening for an extended road trip, and his dub Mother wanted to take him to brunch to say goodbye to him. Never mind she had all the preceding week to do so, and I had four tenderloin steaks and five pounds of Gulf shrimp defrosted. They wound up being gone several hours, our dinner was ruined, and DH went down the road feelin' bad. I took the shrimp to a buddy from Louisiana who turned them into etoufee.

  OBAMA WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

  he couldnt bring the olympics to chicago but he accomplished this coveted award after only a few months in office.

  somebody out there sees this man as doing what the planet needs.

  perhaps.. but i for one am not as shocked as most.

  In the past few years I have enjoyed James A. Michener's 'The World Is My Home'. And it was. Fascinating man.

  Loren Eisley was a palentologist looking for evidence of humans in the pleistocene age, authored several books on natural science, and many short story collections. He ended up as an administrator at Penn State. His autobiography is titled 'The Night Country'. He's the one who wrote the short story 'The Star Thrower' which blends spiritual philosophy with science . Here is an online version: http://www.rawfoodinfo.com/action/activist_starthrower.html

  Ayaan Hirsi Ali's 'Infidel' is a look at her life in war torn Somalia, her forced arranged marriage and her escape to the Netherlands where she had to learn the Dutch language, and how to function in a modern society. She put her self through college, and won a seat in the Dutch Parliment. She had to overcome her upbringing in a destructive cult bent on the destruction of Western society, to become one of it's champions. She currently lives under 24 hour guard, because people can't just walk away from her cult of upbringing.

  I'm sure you'll get many responses to your call for autobiographies. I look forward to seeing what else is offered, because I enjoy them too, and am always looking for a good read.

  Leonard Cohen in Concert Last Week at 74 - This Man has Still Got It!!

  he is a brillant singer, songwriter and poet, a hall of famer, but there is something more to leonard.. i started an essay last year called "leonard cohen and my other fathers.

  Seeker4, your d'affaires de coeur are more like a visit to The Sisters Of Mercy; if your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn, they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem.

  Don’t worry about what others here have said. There always will be those with their knee in your balls and their fist in your face.

  Cohen is superlative in his parsing of love, hate and everything in between.

  What Islam Did for Science - New TV AAAAH!

  this is a rehash of the series "genius of islam" form the 80's.. what makes me mad is that making and keeping ice in the desert for iced cream, air conditioned bazaars.

  new mathematical methods, astronomical observations and new theories on optics is nothing to do with a religion.. all that happened was that clever people used their intelligence to solve problems,.

  and they happened to have been raised as muslims.. can you imagine the outcry if we put on a tv show called "genius of christianity" or "what christianity did for science"?.

  Shuning the shunner

  my daughter goes to a school where one of the office personel is a jw.

  my hubby is df'd i haven't been to a meeting in 3 years.

  when we go into the office and have to talk to her she directs all of her responses to me even if my husband is the one that asked the question.. once my husband went in there with my daughter and this person didn't direct her answers to my husband who asked the question, but to my daughter who was just tagging along.. this is stupid.

  Explain the religious aspect of it including the fact that a person who is one of Jehovah's Witnesses can discuss business with a disfellowshipped person.

  Better yet, register concern with the school that this person will not communicate with your husband, and leave the religious aspect out of it. I guarantee you the secretary look stupid when she has to explain to the principal just why she can't speak to your husband. Oh, that will provide a fine witness!!

  Canadian girl murdered by father - she did not wear her hijab.

  friends and classmates of a 16-year-old girl who police say was murdered by her devout muslim father in a toronto suburb told local media tuesday she was killed for not wearing a hijab.

  police said in a statement they received an emergency call at 7:55 am local time monday from "a man who indicated that he had just killed his daughter.

  the victim, aqsa parvez, was "rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but tragically passed away late last night.

  What a tragedy; this poor girl led her too short life under a system that is a political ideology bent on world conquest disguised as a religion. She was killed because she would not submit. Afterall, that is what Islam means, submission. Not peace. Submission that brings peace. May she be at peace.

  If you want peace, make it a bad bet to attack you. there will always be those who desire what you have, or to take you down a rungs. We have a responsibility to our children to ensure that they are safe, and the biggest threat we currently face is islamic fascism, communism might be staging a comeback, and the neocommunism of today's hard left poses a fifth collumn danger right within our walls.~RollerDave

  Right on, Roller!

  Antonio Gramcsci's development of multiculturalism as a political tool and the West's buy in to it via academia and our pols have fostered a fifth column. The words of Khrushchev ring true when he said 'We will bury you', although with a twist. We will bury ourselves (Western Civilization, that is).

  I am beginning to wonder if the purpose of 20th century cults besides control of people and accumulation of wealth is to foster in their communitys or in the freed population a Gramscian multi-cultural live and let live philosophy. They join the ranks of the fifth column that RollerDave speaks of.

  Neville Chamberlain sought to appease the Nazi regime and limit the expansion of the Soviet Union through the Munich Agreement, but it didn’t give Britain peace, limit communism or stop the Nazis. The current war was initiated not as a defensive action to avenge 9-11 nor to rid Iraq of a dictator despite what GWB still believes (or pretends too). He has been bought and paid for by an industry dependent on a region of the world that subscribes to an ideology diametrically opposed to the West. Pulling out of Iraq and ceasing all US military actions anywhere will not bring peace, nor will it solve our greedy imperialistic ways. However, that is another topic.

  I will say this for the peace movement; it has given us some good music. The Guthries, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan are some of my favorites. I now just find myself less able to tolerate some of their philosophies.
