I agree in principle as long as the service is decent. If it is atrocious, there will be no tip!
I guess they don't want to look like cheapskates because so many dubs are going out to eat in convention cities! They only care because poor tipping will reflect on them and not because they care about waiters/waitresses in general. Unless, oops I forgot, maybe some dubs have jobs as waiters/waitresses and the tips aren't so good.
I don't like when they start giving advice like this because they really don't approve of secular work to begin with. They were always saying we should spend as little time as possible on a secular job. Some years ago they were saying you should give two weeks notice to an employer. I had a disagreement with a sister over this because there are instances when an employer does not deserve any notice.

A relationship with God or the organization ?
by vitty ini have been thinking about this for a while, so here goes.
when i was in the "truth" i truly believed in god, i prayed and tried to do what was right ( wt style) then when i started reading stuff and the experiences on here it didnt take very long before i knew the "truth" wasnt true after all.. so after 20 years as an adult that i spent in, it litrually took a few hours to come out.. ive asked myself how and why did this happen?
and so quickly.. at first i felt i still believed in jehovah, but if the wt was wrong, where did that leave me.

UpsideDown and Terry:
You said it all and remember it better than I could!
Maybe in the beginning they were sincere but at some point (I don't know when)they developed into the typical religion. It is just the same tired old story of an elite few wanting followers!
What an evil of mankind! Wanting to be worshiped and putting themselves over other people! Will this ever end? -

The day of death is better than the day of one being born...
by El Kabong in"a good name is better than oil, and the day of death is better than the day of one being born.." .
i remember that scripture from the book of ecclesiasties (sp?...it's been a long time).
i attended the funeral of my friend today, and that scripture came to mind.

Well, I didn't say it exactly as you said it but close!
The point is - they want total self sacrifice on our part. They want you to give up your life for them. They are looking for serfs to serve them. They have set themselves over us to be served.
I can't believe that a compassionate god really wants this. For us to squander our life like the sand in an hourglass and look forward to some hereafter - even if the hereafter is supposed to be on earth. I can't stand this mindset. Squander your short life now because this is not the REAL life, ad nauseum. I have a real problem with this belief!
In this regard they differ very little from other christian religions who believe everybody is going to heaven. -

I never heard it put quite that way: they want you to act as though you are dead but still around to judge yourself! What awful psychology! But so true. -

Are You/ Were You Careful To Follow Rules??
by minimus inwhen we were in the organization, i noticed that some persons wanted rules.
needed them!
there are people in society that also feel secure when they have stricter rules than not.

No I wasn't. I am a little contrary by nature and a non-conformist. Naturally I was always on that famous s-list ha. ha. I felt I made enough concessions and there was just so much I would follow. I learned to keep my mouth shut though.

I remember this scripture. I don't necessarily disagree with it because I agree we are all dust and at the end of your life you can see what you have accomplished, etc. whereas when you are a newborn you are a blank slate.
But the problem I have is how they used to quote it frequently. The reasons I can see is to discourage anybody from thinking about celebrating their birthday and also to instill guilt. They were definitely hooked on performing works. They were always trying to demean us and make us feel like we weren't doing enough. You were supposed to have a treadmill mentality of constantly striving to do more. Contributing to the "I can never be worthy to be saved" mentality. -

Do you ever wish you were a Moron?
by GetBusyLiving inis your bullsh*t meter always cranked up to overdrive these days?
i'm a happy enough guy but i find i get somewhat irritated reading of the faith people have in their belief systems, even outside of the dubs.
i'm not trying to be condecending with this post at all.

Wish??
I WAS a moron when I was a dub! You had to be to function there. You checked your brain at the door. -

WHO IS YOU?
by Terry inthe mind is what the brain does; not who you are.
the soul is an idea that would seem to have testable consequences.
specifically, if the human mind is the product of a "ghost in the machine" and not simply the result of electrochemical interactions, then the mind should not be dependent on the physical actions of the brain that houses it.

Little Toe:
You might have a point there. Somehow the belief in reincarnation is creepy in some way as is the karma wheel (like a hell in some fashion). If this is true I have no control over it anyway!
By the way, are those your two kids in your picture. Cute! -

I am grateful I was not raised as one but I can see how some are raised in it and want nothing to do with it. Unless you keep children in a vacuum (which dubs would like to do) they are going to see how OTHER people live. They will see other laughing, happy children on the block, in school, etc. with their families doing things they cannot do and they will greatly resent it. Also, if the home is the scene of terrible fights (whether one or both parents are dubs) they will hate the religion and feel it is the cause of the misery.
As soon as they are old enough they will be out of there! -

LittleT:
My heart goes out to you for what you have been through!
Many years ago I was in a car group with one particular crazy woman in my congregation (she was living in an abusive marriage. She related a story of some poor girl who was living with a father who was doing things to her. I am not sure if this girl was a JW or not but I responded that the girl should run away! She replied that maybe the girl shouldn't run away (I don't remember her exact words as to why). But she made it sound like the girl was obligated to stay and suffer until Jehovah made the way out or whatever! This deeply disturbed me. What sick masochism!!
