I agree with you that they ARE part of the world - just an unwilling part of it.
It would not be possible to live on planet earth today and not be part of the world, whether you like it or not. As mentioned, you would have to be literally like the Amish and be self-sufficient and not dependent in any way on society in general. This isn't the same world as when the bible was written so the scripture cannot be taken absolutely literally. One could only do so to a certain point.
With regard to whether having stocks is like voting: I don't know if it is quite in the same category. Is there a measure of hypocrisy here? Possibly. But this is something that is part of our world today that didn't exist back then.

Do you think the Watchtower makes up experiences by people ???
by run dont walk inin the may 1, 1988 watchtower, on page 22, a witness, matsue ishii, recalls her first encounter with the bible students in 1928: at the back of our house in tojo-cho, osaka, there was a house with a sign: "osaka branch of the international bible students association.
" assuming it to be a christian group, i visited the house.
"do you believe in the second advent of the lord?

Do you mean like the experiences of people in third world countries that have been heard at assemblies.
You know the ones I mean where people swim across crocodile infested rivers, climb mountains, hack their way through a jungle - just to get to their meeting.
Maybe there is a grain of truth somewhere in these stories but I always felt somewhat angry that anyone would try to manipulate my emotion of guilt. -

disfellowshipped for gluttony?
by onintwo inhello jwd board community.
just wondering.. has anyone ever heard of a person being disfellowshipped for the terrible sin of gluttony?
isn't it ranked right up there with drunkeness, adultery, murder, etc.?.

I have personally never heard of anyone being disfellowshipped for gluttony. How could they, really??
Years ago I had a conversation about this very thing with an older sister. She said that it has its roots in the Roman empire. Apparently, they would sometimes induce vomiting so they could eat and eat at the big banquets they would have!! -

I remember when I first found this site I was slightly guilty but overjoyed.
It was a relief to see that other people felt the same things I did. This may sound trite but you can't underestimate this. To a person who could never speak of certain things and had to hold everything in for years it was a release to finally feel free to say the things you always felt! -

Further to the claim of them helping needy individuals:
I used to hear that they would privately help certain select ones. These people were usually pioneers or were in the right clique. If you didn't happen to be in the "right" category you would not receive any help. This even went to far as to announce certain people from the platform as being ill or whatever but others were virtually ignored.
Years ago, I made mention of what I saw was a glaring injustice whereby a family whose house was destroyed in a fire was not even mentioned. Meanwhile certain others who were popular were constantly being mentioned if they had a sniffle, e.g. "Sister So-and-So is home and not feeling well...."
When I complained to an elder about this I was told it wasn't their fault because it was how they were fed the information. Whatever. -

Rutherford received inspiration from the spirit realm
by truth_about_the_truth inexcerpts from: http://www.premier1.net/~raines/medium.html.
in the finished mystery, published in 1917, they said that armageddon would really break loose in 1918 with the destruction of "christendom" and all the church members and by 1920 all kingdoms of the earth would pass away.
[16] in 1918 the "little flock" would pass beyond the veil and 1921 would be the last year to make it to heaven and would see the death of all in the "great multitude" class.

Wow, I never realized these old books said the things they did!
It is no wonder they were yanked off the KH library shelves because they are an embarrassment to them now! I mean, how do you deny something YOU actually printed.
Many years ago a woman who I had a study with donated one very old book to me. I don't remember the name of it. I tried reading some of it but I couldn't stick with it. I donated it to the KH library.
Sometime after that it just "disappeared". -

The GB as JW celebrities
by Rubyvixen ini am really, really curious as to how other people back while in the org viewed the gb.
because my oldest brother (older than me by 14 years!
) was first at the watchtower farms and then brooklyn bethel and my uncle is a member of the gb, my mother tended to flaunt these facts and look for every opportunity to go to either place with her bible studies (these terms are so weird to use after all these years lol).

Ruby:
I went on two tours of bethel and one to the farm many years ago. I shook hands with many people but I am not sure if any were the GB. I know I have met several "anointed".
The impression I always had is that there is an element of "creature worship" or what I felt was undue "honor" where anointed are concerned (sorry if I sound cynical and please don't confuse it with consideration for somebody who is just "elderly"). I imagine there must be more of this where the GB are concerned. I always felt all of this nonsense is just a dangerous step away from kissing somebody's ring, etc. -

When is one considered a "sister"/"brother"?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini came home from work early today, and one of my wife's jw friends was visiting when i got home.
she was actually there for a social visit, not for a study or any other jw agenda, so it didn't really bother me.
it did surprise me however, that she kept calling my wife "sister".

I always hated the terms "sister" and "brother" coming from people who were neither to me.
I resolved that if I was in a public place and somebody called out to me and didn't use my name but said "Sister ___", I wouldn't acknowledge them. I would ignore them, especially if they were somebody who was around a long time and saw me for many years.
First of all, the term "sister" conjures up the image of a nun in a habit and secondly, it is an excuse for somebody not to get to know you as a person. -

Is it intuition, clairvoyence, or THE DEVIL?
by anewme inthis subject may be in the files.
my new mother-in-law is a truly lovely person.
i am a bit baffled though by her use of intuition to make all kinds of decisions.

In some ways I could relate to her but I don't believe in reincarnation. I don't know if guardian angels are real or not, so I have no comment on that.
But if I were her I would keep some observations to myself because some things are just downright creepy. She doesn't have to share them with everybody. However, if I had an overwhelming bad feeling about something I might share it under the right circumstances.
