Thanks...I wasn’t interested in opinions of seniors with a cushy life collecting a pension because THEY already worked.

I came into the religion at a bad time - late ‘70s. The ‘Stepford Wives’ type women there looked at me strangely because I worked.

I had to support myself plain and simple. There were also no desirable marriage prospects!..I was raised Catholic - and one thing so-called ‘worldly’ people know is that everybody gets old and you need to think about retirement. As time went on I think some younger JWs realized they needed to do something.

I’m glad I looked out for my own interest because people who DIDN’T are up that famous creek without a paddle.

How do you personally deal with your still in family JWS ?

for myself i just try to avoid them intentionally maybe see them once every couple of years on average.

they used to be easy going but over the last 10 years or so they got more cult like and distant and i'm really not bothered by that, maybe a bit.

they stick to their own or other members like they are their family so, its makes it unattractive for myself to connect and reach out to them anymore.

So, your relatives have gotten more cult-like and distant over the last decade or so?

I wonder though if they would come looking for you if they needed money or anything el$e? Some ex-JWs have this experience. Not having Witness relatives I’m not faced with this, but I’d never tolerate ‘shunners’ asking for money.

HI PETRA,

Thanks. You don’t know how lucky you are that you got out as a kid. You have fewer bad memories than others.

I know a lot of older people in the religion suffered back then and sadly are suffering now because they were talked into not preparing for Retirement... I ‘suffered’ back then in the sense that I was not ‘approved’ because I wouldn’t quit my full time job to do the full time ministry and I wasn’t invited much.

No regrets. I had to look out for myself. But, I also got grief every now and then over my figure and was expected to ‘try harder’ and dress dowdier, etc. SO, I was THAT single working woman who had a nice figure and that bothered some people. Because of the spiteful attitude towards me over my job and my appearance, I made sure I was Not available to do favors for the Users. This was No ‘brotherhood’ as far as I was concerned and I wouldn’t give these people the time of day.

Now, they have the audacity to imagine that people still there are going to give $$ and support people who never wanted to work and had the balls to criticize people such as myself who DID work.

Glad I’m not there because I’d never tolerate these pathetic people who never learned to live in REALITY coming near me looking for anything!

I also saw this on Reddit and couldn’t believe it. This isn’t talking about somebody just giving haircuts to presumably needy ‘Friends’ in full time ministry.

It also gives a sense that they really DO expect people in congregations to actually support these people in every way you can imagine!..Again, I’m so glad I got out of the religion years ago because I couldn’t stand being around this!

Also, let’s not forget that if somebody walks away from the JW religion that’s one less person they can go up to and ask for $$.

In addition, if that person had a service that people there used (emphasis on the word Use), they are especially angry because the loss is doubly felt. It’s not only a person that is no longer under ‘control’, but somebody who can no longer be exploited materially...They hate losing ‘assets’:..the person who did taxes cut-rate or free; the person who drove people around; the person who fixed cars or computers; or the family who opened up their home and served food, etc. etc.

They would want to fill these voids but maybe it’s not so easy anymore because more people there have become wise and have come to feel the way I felt years ago: that they weren’t THERE to be exploited or targeted to do favors.

here is a brother who really thinks that elders are there to help him after admitting that he cheated on his wife.

his conscience is bothering him to the point of letting elders know all the details of his affair.

( his affair should have been private, between himself and his wife ).

I am glad that immigrant brother who was the welder looked out for his own interest. Good for him! 👍🏻

There is No forgiveness for what we experienced and I’m grateful I didn’t succumb to peer pressure and hounding.. So what if I wasn’t invited to gatherings?? I’ll take Witness hatred any day because at least I planned for my Retirement.

Don’t forget that those older Witnesses (with cushy lives/good pensions) who pushed poverty for some young person aren’t EVEN around to help anybody today.. They either passed away OR have moved away.. I remember big brags and confident talk from people who are gone now.

The JW religion is filled with tragedies like this but the people suffer in silence because they don’t want to be heard to be bringing ‘reproach..” Then they would be shunned and not get any charitable contributions or menial work from ‘the brothers’. They are in a Catch-22 predicament.

It makes me angry that not only is there No accountability for what happened - but history is repeating itself yet again in 2020.

I would never have gone to an elder for anything - since I saw back then they were Company men.

They were behind the push to get me to quit a decent job, pursue poverty in the full time ministry and do favors for Users in the congregation! ..This is the bullshit that was held out for a single woman (which I rejected) and I despise their guts.

These hypocrites were collecting their pensions since THEY were once in the workforce supporting themselves well and planning for their future Retirement..So, why would I not have been as well?

Glad I never heeded their advice as they were certainly not looking out for MY best interest!

he was my brother's best friend for 35 years until 5 years ago.

they had a falling out and neither of them will tell me why they do not speak to each other.

I don’t blame you for being angry and wanting to back off. You were running around doing all this for him - and yet that’s not enough? He expects you to be on call 24/7.

This so-called friendship sounds like a trap. I’m sorry about his situation but if it were me I would make myself unavailable. I’m not interested in a job as a nursemaid.

At what point does the head quarters put out workers?

at what point does the jw head quarters put people out.

i know if they get pregnant and are not essential they are gone.

what about injuries, illness ect?.

From what I heard: people would be sent home permanently from bethel because of illness, age, serious infraction and if somebody didn’t like their attitude.

And, Yes, a ‘worldly’ employer at least usually gives some severance and the person has paid into Social Security!

We have heard of hundreds over the last two decades who were sent home - mostly because of age (55 ish) it would seem. Hopefully, they have gotten jobs from brothers with businesses and are ‘settled’ at this point. They may not be thrilled at their situation but I believe they are better off than those who are let-go years later.

As far as ‘pity’ jobs go, it’s possible some aren’t so capable and some brother is just tolerating them. [But, this just adds to the problem of people ALREADY in congregations who never prepared for Retirement!..And I’m GLAD I’m not around them.]

After what has already happened in all the bethels, anybody STILL at a bethel had better prepare and have a plan for when the letter is slipped under THEIR door! They can’t say they weren’t warned.

Also, because of halls being sold off - some ex-bethelites won’t have a physical congregation to go TO. It’s going to be very hard for any future bethelites who get kicked out - not only because of this but because of the generally bad economic condition in the country because of Covid.

Why not help 'the friends' with the wealth?

in the new testament, when funds were collected, they were distributed to all, not hoarded at hq (not that there was an hq).

of course now they're fraudulently taking credit for the government's free food program, but what about other things, unlike disaster relief, that don't get them publicity and credit?

When I was in the JW religion years back there was a ‘mixed message’ that people would be ‘helped’ or ‘taken care of’. But, I never once heard of anybody being directly helped by the religion itself.

Their answer to this problem was to go around discreetly targeting certain individuals with an envelope asking for money..Years ago I was approached and gave a little. The elder told me it was for a certain lady. I didn’t mind because she was a friend and a hardworking woman (not a leech). He came back at the next meeting saying she didn’t need the $ and wanted to give it back. I told him to put it in the contribution box.

The point I’m making is that it is unreasonable for anybody to think the people in the congregation are going to pay anybody’s major bills!..I could see maybe a bag of groceries.

This also doesn’t take into account somebody (like myself) who was criticized or shunned for having a full time job..This is why I am GLAD to not be in the religion now..This is what it has been reduced to: targeting people left and right for $$.

Never mind the Covid crisis making people needy!..The JWs were in trouble BEFORE this because of preaching against careers and having too many people at Retirement age without preparation!
