I cannot imagine that many of those hard-core pioneers of the 1980s are still full-time pioneering today in 2025.

I remember those people my age group then who criticized me for working full-time! They lived on the edge with part time jobs, etc..because they were expecting the End at any minute.. Certainly they would have been forced off the pioneer list over the years because of pressing expenses of living in this world.

Examples I heard of were couples who needed medical coverage desperately and so one or both needed a ‘regular’ job that provided the needed benefits.. What people fail to mention is that young people might get away with having no medical coverage for a time (unwise as this may be) because they are young and relatively healthy.. So, Time and aging bodies forces people to deal with reality!

Even back when I was a ‘believer’ I always felt the only people who should be pioneering were retirees or kids on summer vacation. Again, I’m Glad today I kept that job and didn’t follow the crowd in the Kingdom Hall.

Also: In my case, years ago there was nobody in the congregation at the time with a business who suggested to me that I work for them. I want to stress again that this near-poverty lifestyle was being pushed on younger people there.

I would have been expected to do cleaning on my own. Just to show you how I seriously tried to see if this could work for me: I once cleaned a house with an older sister.. Well, after how long it took and all the physical labor, I said forget it. (ALSO, this Witness woman was MARRIED with a husband paying major bills and she did a cleaning job for extra money! To be perfectly clear, she was not doing this to support herself!)

After careful consideration, I realized I would have to be OUT of my mind to quit a good job (with benefits) to do this.. I had the confidence (maybe because of my non-Witness upbringing) to not care what critical or jealous people with issues about women thought about me.. I also was not swayed by a desire to be ‘liked’ or invited to special dinners like some other young people there. (What a mistake on their part and this isn’t paying for their retirement today!)

Most of the older JW busybodies went to their graves after living a cushy life.. Good thing I never listened to these sons-of-bitches because where the hell would I be today?? I never lost sight of the fact I had to look out for myself and I am grateful today that I did!!

Yes, that’s correct that brothers with businesses like to employ other Witnesses. Sadly, I have heard in some cases they underpay them or try to get away with other things!

In my opinion, young Witnesses would be well advised to get work elsewhere! Maybe initially it may sound good to accept a job working for Witnesses - but think of the big picture.. What happens when a young Witness decides he wants out of the religion? He would get fired and otherwise be made miserable. [This scenario also works in reverse if a Witness business owner decides to leave the religion. All his/her Witness customers will pull the rug out from under them and leave.]

Any young Lurkers here should think hard about this and maybe politely decline that job offer from Brother Business Owner.

Good that we all skedaddled from that mess.

I wasn’t yet in the JWs in 1975 so I missed out on all the fun. If the world had ended I wouldn’t have known what hit me. I was in blissful ignorance in the Catholic religion. Whatever. Maybe I was less susceptible to JW manipulation? Who knows.

In the earlier years on this forum I said I didn’t want to be around Jehovah’s Witnesses when reality hit them because I knew this ‘no retirement preparation’ was going to be disastrous for them 👎. Well, we saw it happen. Reality certainly has hit them: the 1995 Generation teaching; the turn of the new century 2000 with nothing happening; the changed/dropped teachings in 2023 and now we are in 2025.

Everybody there got old. Many passed away. Some there got old being prepared for retirement; others not prepared at all 😮.

Now here we are all OUT and on this forum being spectators watching the religion still giving the same bad advice all these years later in spite of many testimonials showing it was a failure.

While you are absolutely correct about the JW religion’s leaders not having lived in the Real world that you and I live in, I was generally referring to the elders in the congregations I attended.

Most of these effin hypocrites did live in the ‘real’ world. Many were in the workforce when they were young and still were. The eldest were collecting pensions and the younger ones on their way to.. But YET these hypocrites knocked ME because I was in that very same workforce. Was it because I was female? Most definitely - and there is NO forgiveness for this.

They didn’t tell some brother to quit his job and clean toilets. But, yet, they tried this with me.. However, I REFUSED to follow in the footsteps of other single women there and didn’t care with what anybody thought.. Today, I consider it worth every penny that I was shunned by hypocrites of all ages back then.

As I mentioned previously, these older people have passed away so nobody can tell them off or hold them accountable, unfortunately.. The next best thing I have done is tell Witnesses my age group still in the religion that I am Glad I never listened and won’t tolerate anybody coming near me now looking for money!

I refuse to believe any such God answers prayers like this regarding human beings’ desires and vanities.. As has been pointed out: why would any God not answer the prayers of the millions suffering all over the world??

You made a good point that years ago the religion really believed the End was imminent! They are much more reprehensible now in 2025 still preaching the same damaging shit. I don’t blame you for hating their f#cking guts! I never got a chance to tell off the sons-of-bitches who condemned me for not quitting a full-time job. They made sure I was treated like Typhoid Mary because I wasn’t pioneering and doing the ‘approved’ housecleaning.. I am so Grateful today I never listened to any of them!

I would have loved to rub it in these false prophets’ faces like a dog with its poop.. But, these SOBs have all died and gone to their graves after living cushy lives - unlike many of their followers who are suffering today.😞

So far, there has been No justice for this! Will there ever be???

The org's failed last days predictions were "well meant."

more than 140 years of a sincere & well-meaning "it's coming soon" from the org, can be swept under the carpet - nothing to see here!.

I remember that manipulation, peer pressure and hype to quit my job and to do cleaning and pioneer.👎 I resisted it all and they hated me for it.

I remember arrogant bastards on the podium and all the older JWs with presumptuous statements. I also blame this on the nasty attitude I got from some people my age in the hall.. I once had somebody scoff at me! Hope they can pay their bills now.. Fast forward to now: I’m Grateful I never caved in to any of this.

You say the WT ‘has a lot to answer for’ and I have heard others say it.. Well, I would be curious to know how this could happen??

I do wonder what all these older Witnesses who got burned by the ‘no career/no retirement savings’ are doing about this?? Or, are they just suffering in dumb silence? Are they too afraid to rock the boat or be shunned? Too bad.

I am long out of the JW religion so this is no concern of mine. Just curious.. Also, how could I pity people who knocked or shunned me because I had a full-time job?

”Well meant” isn’t good enough, regardless of what the religion thinks.

This goes hand in hand with the worn out statement used by many Jehovah’s Witnesses when they are backed into a corner: “it’s the closest thing to the truth”. Again, ‘closest’ just doesn’t cut it. Something either is or is not truth.

The tragedy are the millions of Witnesses who made serious life decisions on these failed predictions decades ago. They didn’t get careers or save for retirement convinced it ‘wasn’t necessary’.. I am so Glad I never fell for any of this years ago.. I cringe when I think about it.

it would sound like they are hinting at a change in thinking.. in my opinion, any such change would be yet another slap in the face to faithful pimis along with those other recent changes.. there are so many heartfelt responses on that thread and a lot of justified anger.. don’t know what to say except that i’m so glad i never listened to the religion all those years ago.

I am sorry about your situation and hope you and other JWs are able to get decent work and stay afloat financially. This world is very hard to live in even for those of us who planned!

You are correct that those older Jehovah’s Witnesses who made presumptuous statements that younger people in the congregation wouldn’t need to plan for retirement are all gone by now.. They went to their graves after living a comfortable life.. I observed that many had BEEN in the workforce when younger.. But, yet, I was knocked for being in it.

I was an unusual JW because I wasn’t raised in the religion. I came in already with the full-time job. Wow, you should have seen the hate campaign against me because I wouldn’t quit my job. Well, it’s history and I’m Glad I never listened.

I am sure many of the numerous older JWs today feel like they got slapped in the face when some idiot elder told them “they served (J) with a complete heart”.. In my opinion, it was the religion they served for a lifetime and they got nothing but a handful of wishes.. How infuriating.

I do hope that all of this internet exposure - including forums like this and many other ex-JW activists with their numerous YouTube videos helps to prevent more young Witnesses from falling into the trap many of their predecessors did!

Please plan for your future with a decent job and savings!.. Ignore busybodies like I did.. Remember: the Bible tells us to save! It was only the religion who twisted this all around to say something it didn’t.. Let no young person today end up like older broke Witnesses who didn’t plan and who ended up being told..”Well, you served Jehovah with a complete heart”.. Like this is supposed to mean something(?)

Nobody wants to hear a condescending statement like this as a half-assed consolation prize after a lifetime of ‘service’ while they are left with nothing at an advanced age. So tragic and unnecessary.
