My first rude awakening came when I was approached by an elder many years ago about how it was noticed that I wore a skirt with a slit when I attended a circuit assembly. Mind you, this was a skirt that was below my knees by at least two inches! The slit was in the front and it wasn't that bad. Here I was feeling good about myself and I get tapped on the shoulder. That was the end of my innocence as far as they were concerned! From that point I realized how hooked they were on modesty in women's dress. Over the years I noticed that certain sisters were singled out more than others.

counsel from elders
by bonnzo inhow many have had elder give u this counsel(or if /were an elder given this counsel):
"its come to our attention that u were(fill in space with anything that is up to your own conscience that is ok in wt world such as pg-13 movie, certain music, or choice of entertainmen).
this has offended the conscience of others" then proceeds to counsel u to cease and desist so as to appease the other persons conscience.. isn't this a case of the sensitive conscience forcing me to abide their concience even more so than they claim im offending theirs?

"Confession" to God or to the Elders...
by JH in.
my parents are catholic, and they had a special meeting for "confession" last night.
this got me thinking about confession in the jw's.. it seems to me that jw's confess their sins to elders rather than to god..... try smoking or playing lotto, and then tell the elders that you done that and asked god for forgiveness.. i think that you'll have to ask the elders for forgiveness too...

When I was a Catholic and I went to confession I was in a booth with a screen and I was anonymous to the priest. If what he was told was repeated it had no effect on the parishoners as it was probably only repeated to other priests and generally speaking a priest is a priest for life. With the JWs it could be repeated to any number of people there starting with the elder's wife then other elders and their wives and then ministerial servants, etc. Then to top it all off, if that person ever left the JWs they took your "secrets" with them.

Jehovah's Witnesses GET CRAZY!!
by GetBusyLiving indo you guys know any very obviously crazy jw's?
i've noticed that they have been "flocking" to the org.
over the past few years especially.

I did notice a few "eccentric" individuals in the JWs. The problem with these individuals is that if they got a lot of time in the field service they were "elevated" by people there and put on a little pedestal. The only time they got counseled is if they did something that was offensive to the elders. The problem with this is that you had to keep your eyes open and be aware of these nutty people so that you were not burned by them.

Disparaging Terms
by Blueblades in"apostate" is the most hateful, disparaging term in watchtower vocabulary.. yet, on page 15 of the dec.1st, 1984 watchtower they say,"it would be unscriptural for us ( wbts ) to use disparaging terms when referring to ones who do not share our belief.".
talk about hypocrisy!
when anyone calls you an apostate, point them to this wt.and watch their reaction.. blueblades

One of my earliest impressions of them is that they are very much into labels for everything whether disparaging or not. This is also a control mechanism to get people to think a certain way about persons and things. I saw through it early on but kept my feelings to myself. I never needed to be called "Pioneer" and have people clap! I always thought this was childish - like we were in first grade again! As far as the word "apostate" goes, I was technically an apostate when I left Catholicism. This word has no power over me. Other religions use it too.

I still think it might be the truth - what is wrong with me?
by slimboyfat inapostate literature - i have read the lot.
you name it - c of c, gentile times reconsidered, thirty tears a watchtower slave, the orwellian world of jehovah's witness, apocalypse delayed, and the freeminds and watchtower observer sites, so on and so on.
and i have been reading the posts on this site regularly pretty much since it started, and hourglass before it.

SBF: I had a discussion with a JW once about the errors of the org. She said: "I still think Jehovah is using this organization." The problem I have with this thinking is: If Jehovah is cutting slack to the witnesses for being imperfect then why isn't he cutting slack to other religions? After all, they are all wrong in varying degrees. LHG

What Is The "Bottom Line" Regarding The "Truth"/ Organization???
by minimus inis it that it's all a joke, a smokescreen?
is it all about 'just do for us and expect nothing in return'?
is it that they really don't care about anything but their property and their real estate?
-

Minimus: I would hate to think this is true. I sincerely believed it (or most of it anyway) only because I was unaware of their past. Any doubts I had I pushed to the back of my mind until there were so many of them they wouldn't stay there. There is also a saying in the world that the government exists to perpetuate itself. I somehow think that this saying also applies to the JWs. They are there to perpetuate their own existence and do not want anybody to blow it for them. LHG

How do you women feel about acting stupid to please men and the borg?
by Dragonlady76 inthe quote below was part of a talk in the 90's.
i heard this as a child and thought to myself, how can any woman accept such a draconian veiw?
i was not sure if i had understood correctly so, i brought it up to my bible study conductor maggie, i was appalled that she agreed with this veiw, we debated it back and forth, until i got the upper hand, then she told me that i was to "rebellious and strong willed", and that i "should never get married", that i way i would not have to submit to male "headshit" "headship".

Does everybody remember in their world history class when we studied about how the Chinese used to bind the feet of their infant girls so they would grow up to walk in a hobbled manner - because they thought that was feminine?!! Well, we can be grateful this practice was outlawed. What this reminds me of is how women are treated by the JWs. This is what they want to do to a woman's brain. They want to turn her into a mental cripple so that they will feel more manly about themselves. LHG

As a single woman she became more independant
by purplesofa inexerpt from 2/1/05 wt is the truth bearing fruit in those you teach?.
consider how another christian was able to help her bible student.
the student was attending meetings and sharing in the ministry and had already expressed a desire to get baptised.

I am with you all on this one! If I didn't know better I would think they wanted to bring about your degradation and destruction. Such hatred of women! You know the scripture that describes in ancient Israel how a woman got up early, ran the household, etc.? Back then the women made business deals, real estate transactions, etc. but yet their husband prized them. So what is wrong with these characters today?? Why are they so threatened by a woman with a brain? I don't understand it. It must be a modern phenomenon. Maybe there is something in the water. All I know is that I was created an intelligent being and I will now allow somebody with his own issues to deprive me of my God given self-esteem. Surely real men would not be threatened by us. LHG

Thinking back
by purplesofa inmy bookstudy was at an elders house that lived a bit out of the city.
a small road with only his house and another.
the other house was the first you passed.....unsightly....trashed cars.......broken down bicycles............not trashy, but not like the bit of paradise at the elder house.. i remember the elder telling us how the man had become ill and lost his job working for the waterworks department, a city job, with little wages.

Yes, it is sad that they have no real provisions for those of us who fall through the cracks. Even the Amish will get together to build a new barn for one whose barn burns down. But, seriously, the JWs do help SOME secretly and selectively. I have heard of pioneers being given money and things by certain ones on the q.t. But, no, there is no organized effort to generally help the poor among them. It all boils down to who you know and how well-regarded you are. LHG
