Yep. I had technicolor dreams! Very vivid.

unforgivable sin
by MerryMagdalene intijkmo's post on watson's "hypothetical" thread got me wondering again...just what the heck is it to sin against the holy spirit according to jw beliefs/teachings?
for something so important as to be "unforgivable" it has always seemed awfully vague to me (so vague that i was sure as a kid that it must be masturbation and for years i felt the great weight of ultimate doom heavily upon me).
is it intentionally vague, do you think, just to keep everyone on their toes and hyper-paranoid or am i missing something?

We were taught that there were just a few people in the bible who committed the unforgivable sin of sinning against the holy spirit.
They were: Adam and Eve, Judas Iscariot, I think the Pharisees and maybe a few other people. But who knows, maybe with their changing new light they may say "criticizing the elders" is an unforgivable sin. In which case I am guilty.

What do people do in a discussion that ticks you off?
by Terry inwe all enjoy an interesting discussion.
but, sooner or later it seem inevitable that somebody comes along and throws a monekywrench into the mechanism and the huge engine sputters to a halt.. what do people do in a discussion that ticks you off and stops the flow of conversation and turns it from being productive to unproductive?.
is it as simple as disagreeing with you?.

Terry:
As you mentioned, one of the things that ticks me off is people taking something personally when it was not meant for them.
We must not lose sight of the fact that most of us are here because we have been hurt by the JWs. Our experiences may differ depending on our gender, geographical location, mentality, income, etc. We also came away with different things from the JWs. Quite simply, we are here to vent and maybe make friends. I am not in competition with anybody nor do I expect to win a prize for literature.

What do I tell my children?
by Nellie ini have four kids - ages 18, 13, 10 and 6. .
first some clarification: i have been in the "truth" for 35 years, and although i have never been particularly active in the ministry .
for example: my 18 year old son really wants his ear pierced.

I read your story and you have been through a lot. You are very courageous.
Not just because of being with a mate who is severely ill but to take the time and effort to publicly denounce the JWs. That takes a lot of effort. You are probably one of the ones the WT is afraid of but also criticizes because they say "oh they're just trying to start their own religion" or some other such thing to squelch any curiosity about why such ones leave. They say "apostates" (I hate that word) have a sin of pride. But we know better.

Garage sales
by poppers infrom reading this site i've learned that jws frown up buying used clothing etc.
from second hand stores because of possible 'demonization.
' my neighbors are jw and i notice that they have fairly frequent garage sales.

Mamochan:
Don't laugh, but your mother's experience about nocturnal demon sexual assault happened to me several times many years ago when I was new as a JW and I don't consider myself to be crazy. Very scary. In my case it didn't have anything to do with thigs from garage sales, etc. I don't recall having anything "questionable" around my house. I don't know what to attribute it to but I am not ashamed to reveal this now.

If you were by yourself you could do a fade. But with a family in the JWs you can't fake it. You have to come out and take a stand (with your family, at least). If your children are already involved in the extra-curricular activities you mention, it is highly likely that you are talked about by the idiots in the hall. I gather from your post that you are on the fringes pretty much. You all deserve to be happy. Do what you want. Let them get their piercings, etc. BUT once they run into other JWs in town or wherever, expect a phone call from one of the nobodies in the hall inquiring as to what is happening. Should be interesting.
Best of luck,

How to relate to JW neighbors
by pianolady inwe have neighbors that are j.w.
and are very nice, unassuming people.
they are friendly but don't go out of their way to establish any friendships in the neighborhood.
-
LongHairGal
Pianolady:
If you only knew! JWs are trained to look at non-witness people as either potential converts or dead meat. It is that simple! Any friendship you strike up with them will only be conditional. They may at some level really like you but they have to stay away. If you do seem to become friendly for a while and you make no progress as far as they are concerned, they will retreat and you will be left with a weird feeling of having been abandoned. Your child will also be puzzled why this other child cannot get too close to him. This is the way it is with them. But this is old news to us.

Walter,
In the 1960s my mother went to confession and the priest asked her if she was using birth control. She said that she was and he told her he could not absolve her sins.
That did it for her!

What are some Bible contradictions that JWs can't reconcile?
by marked ini remember reading in the reasoning book about how to approach someone at the door who said the bible was full of contradictions.
one of the answers was "many say the bible's full of contradictions but no one's been able to show me an example of one.".
so, what are some examples that jws would have no real canned answer to?.

LongHairGal
I also heard it said that Methuseleh lived to a ripe old age and accomplished nothing. Because the bible said nothing they assume he did nothing.
I just thought it sounded presumptuous.

Evilforce:
You can see this is one of the major issues I have with them. Probably more than the doctrinal issues. I really hate them!
Someone once told me that brothers with a college education have a problem accepting counsel. So what this boils down to is that the WT don't want people to have an education because they want to keep them "down". I assume they feel an uneducated person is more pliable. So this is about control.
What makes this even more reprehensible is that they are obscuring the real reason they are against it.
