my soon to be ex moved out over a year ago.
he left most of his things here ( i guess he thinks of my house as his personal storage unit).
one thing he left was his survival backpack, i assume his "go bag".
HOSER:
I totally agree with you that some JWs are confusing disaster preparedness with the great tribulation. Some of them are acting like this is going to be Exodus 2. The point is: where are they going?..I remember asking a JW friend that question and didn’t get a real answer.
Go-Bags are a great idea if you are expecting a hurricane or live in an area prone to floods or wildfires. But, I wonder if some are expecting a miraculous event similar to the parting of the Red Sea.

RULES & REGULATIONS:
Absolutely.
This pettiness towards sisters in the congregation (pertaining to dress along with other nonsense) figured into the many reasons I stopped going. This crap, along with the Users there, gossip, knocking responsible working people, no true friends, etc. made it a very undesirable place for me to be...Of course, the 1995 teaching on Generation was the last straw, not to derail your thread.

BIAHI:
Yes, a sister with a nice figure is a problem in the religion. It doesn’t matter how modestly she tries to dress. (Add to that if she worked full time and refused to quit a decent job to pioneer then she becomes REALLY hated..like I was.)
No, back when I was in the JWs a sister was approved of if she was older, dowdy and married and not perceived to be a ‘sexual threat’ to anybody. The businesslike look with the power suits came soon after which is not to say a sister couldn’t be criticized if her nice figure poked through.

RULES & REGULATIONS:
It is not just about modesty and conformity in my opinion. I always felt the JWs were hooked on looking ‘businesslike’. They started to get this way a few decades ago when I was in. (Certain sisters who wore a shabby sweater or dowdy dress were told to improve things a bit.).. This annoyed me because I felt it was not a true image given to the public..JWs HATE higher education and careers!
However, they want to project the image of intelligent businesslike people when speaking to ‘worldly’ persons who in general are certainly more educated and would not respect somebody who isn’t.
i like subjects that delve into the history of the religion and proofs that the witnesses are not the true religion.
i’m not so much into apologists saying we need to go to meetings, especially if the poster looks like a scammer trying to get ex jws going.
what subjects interest you ?
PISTOLPETE:
This topic of JWs who never planned for retirement is largely unknown by the general public.
These JWs toil and suffer in silence. Many of them are Baby Boomers who fell for the teaching that the New System would be here and they wouldn’t need to worry.
The hypocritical part that bothers me is that many of the older people who were preaching poverty to the then young JWs (and hosting gatherings) were all collecting THEIR pensions and were in the workforce and/or married to ‘worldly’ husbands...But yet they preached poverty to people who were young back in the nineteen seventies. I remember being labeled ‘unspiritual’ because I (wisely) wouldn’t quit my job to pioneer.
These older JWs are mostly all gone now. There’s a few of them I would have loved to tell off but good - and I would have tracked them down to do so!

PISTOLPETE:
I am glad you did what you did, even though it’s the rare few who can retire in their thirties. At that young age most are just getting into their careers. Economics is important though for people finding their way out of JW fantasy world. You have to know how the world works in order to navigate it.
I was already working and in the ‘world’ when I got into the religion. I was appalled at the ignorance and sleep mode I was surrounded by in the hall.
With regard to retirement, most people are grateful that they can retire at ALL when they reach actual retirement age and thankfully I planned for this and never listened to anybody’s foolish talk to the contrary!
i stopped going to kingdom hall meetings about nine years ago.
i was fading for the longest time, refused to go out in field service, dropped out of the ministry school talks, no longer answered at the watchtower study, arrived at the meetings the last second, and left as soon as possible.
i couldn't take attending the meetings any longer.
RULES & REGULATIONS:
Wow, I can’t even remember when I was last in a kingdom hall.
It probably was at a memorial in the early or almost mid 2000s. I was in my ‘Fade’ then and might have been keeping up appearances for the few friends I was hanging onto. I recall that a douchebag sister sarcastically asked me what I was doing there and I responded with a witty answer of my own.
The whole thing was cringeworthy and I couldn’t stand being there.
i have heard a few whispers that once again they are going to be changing the generation teaching.
does anybody have on info on this?.
i would love to be able to hit my family with a. .
BEREAN THINKER:
Let them do this and even more will leave, in my opinion...That 1995 teaching on Generation is what finally made me decide to get the hell out of the JW religion.
Before this happened I was ever hopeful that things would improve for me there..even though I was viewed very negatively because I was a single woman who worked. Then came the 1995 teaching and it was Over.
jehovah can't be your father in this life.
'they [jw members] address him prospectively as "our father.
jesus is not your mediator:.
LOST IN THE FOG:
I guess you can make the scriptures say anything you want them to say then? 🙄
In my opinion, the reason the religion wants people to give up their non-JW friends (and relatives) is so that the person can be better controlled if they are totally isolated. This way when they ‘step out of line’ they can be shunned. Otherwise, how can the shunning routine work if the person has other associates or friends to fall back on? They won’t feel the sting of it or maybe wont even notice.
I’m convinced this is why they wanted me to get rid of my so-called worldly friends back then as well as not bothering with my family.
If I had to say what the worst thing about the religion to ME was this ‘isolation’ as well as knocking me for my full time job which, luckily, I ignored.
When I started my ‘Fade’ 20+ years ago, the first thing I did was to mend relationships with my family and Thanks Be to God I did it before it was too late! I have happy memories of sending out Christmas cards and getting together after so much time...You cannot put a price on this!
