Mine never did. True, I did not have spare time to spend with them outside of school, but to this day I remain closer to the friends that I made in school than I ever was to people in the congregation. They are the ones I have lunch with when I travel back to where I grew up. To this day I could call up one of these friends, even if I have not seen them in years, and know that they are there for me no matter what. What a contrast to the alleged "friends" in the hall who offered conditional "friendship" and are nowhere to be found if you don't follow the rules.

When Do Worldly Friends Begin to Get Shunned?
by Funchback inwhen i first started to study with the dubs, i was about 8 years old.
my mom became a jw but she was very lax with the rules.
she never made me "give up" my non-jw friends (perhaps because my dad never became a dub).

"It wasn't an easy decision for him to make because he is a Jehovah's Witness."
I am assuming that they are referring to giving the blood sample? Good grief! I suppose acting like a complete moron and getting behind the wheel of his car while intoxicated was the easy decision in this case? What kind of an idiot objects to a blood sample being taken on the grounds of being a witness? Never mind, I am not actually looking for an answer on that question, since it is perfectly clear that the idiocy runs deep with this individual.

Did You Support Children Getting Baptized?
by minimus inafter reading blondie's thread of the baptisms at the district convention, i couldn't help but identify with the 11 year old that said she was so happy to be baptized and has wanted to be baptized for years now.
i was 9 when i got baptized but really wanted to take the plunge at around 7. after my mother talked to the congregation servant about my desire, he said that she should not hold me back.
my daughter was 14 when she got baptized.

I brought up the point to my mother that Jesus was 30 when he was baptized and using it as a point against child baptism. Her explanation was that Jesus was fulfilling prophesy, so he HAD to wait until he was 30 and that his age should not be used as any kind of guage. I pretty much knew at that point that the conversation was pointless if that was the "logic" being used.
The only reason I got baptized at 14 was because other girls my age were doing it and it seemed the "in" thing to do at that age - it had absolutely nothing to do with any kind of spirituality. And when I started hearing about 7-10 year olds, and in one case I believe I heard about a 5 year old, getting baptized I thought it was outrageous and ridiculous even when I was a teenager. Now I look at my own almost 7-year old and think of all the kids his age who are raised fear armageddon and other so much that they lose their childhoods to service and meetings and having their lives and thoughts controlled, and it makes me appreciate to an even greater extent the thrill of watching him enjoy the simple joys of childhood that we missed out on.

Were All Early Christians Preachers?
by OHappyDay inreading the book of acts and the letters of paul do not bear out the dogma that all the early christians preached.
there are no "service meetings" in the new testament that prepare the average christian for a public ministry.
reading accounts from contemporary first and second century christians indicates that it was the example of christians, not the preaching by all, that primarily drew nonbelievers to christianity.. it is significant that the instructions to preach that are in the new testament are addressed to "elders" and "overseers" like timothy.

The scripture mentioned about some being given as evangelizers was one of my big peeves, as well as reporting time, etc. I always felt that it was wrong to insist that EVERYONE do it when the bible clearly states that not everyone is qualified/cut out to do the same thing. My mother has been a pioneer since I was 12, has as much as admitted that she HATES it, and her health has suffered for the emotional toll of forcing herself to go and do this for all these years. I am still holding out hope that one day before they die, my parents will see the light and quit while they can still enjoy life.

Have a wonderful time! Vegas is great! I can't offer any advice on slots, since I usually pick the nickel ones because I'm cheap! As far as neat sights go, the Eiffel Tower at the Paris offers a neat view, as well as the Stratosphere ( taller than the eiffel) The top of the stratoshphere at night will give you a great view of the strip if you want any night shots for your film. Bring your walking shoes! Those hotels are HUGE. You could spend days just seeing everything in one of them.

How much do you tip and why?
by els ini am a waitress at a pizzeria/italian restaurant.
overall i get really good tips but sometimes it seems like the customers are going to tip a certain amount no matter what i do.
i can totally screw up a table and still get a great tip and other tables i give perfect service to and get a lousy tip.

15% for average, 20% if it is good service, higher if I think the person has gone the extra mile. I have tipped 25 - 30 % for outstanding service before. VERY RARELY have I left a smaller than 15% tip - the service has to be REALLY atrocious for that to happen. With rare exception, I will tip at least the 15% even if I think the service wasn't great because I know that the person waiting on me relies on the tips for their living. It is a tough job, and my hat is off to anyone who waits on others for a living, Persoanlly I'd probably be spitting in people's drinks if they were rude to me so it is a good thing that I have never been a waitress and never will be for the simple reason that I lack the patience. I think that some people are cheap and may be under the mistaken impression that waitstaff make minimum wage in addition to their tips or something like that - but you are right - with some people it doesn't matter what you do, they are born lousy tippers.
I have only once in my life left without leaving a tip - we ordered and 45 minutes later, the waitress had still not been seen again to so much as refill our drinks, or tell us that our food would be out soon or provide an explanation for the wait. My 6 year old was in tears because he was so hungry. When the food came, it was cold. (We had ordered pancakes for 2 of us and a tuna melt - nothing at all complicated and it was not even busy - I would say that they were at 1/3 - 1/2 capacity, and 3 parties that came in after us who had been seated at another servers station had ordered and received their food and were preparing to leave before we even saw our food.) So in that one case, I felt that I could not find the slightest excuse to justify leaving this girl a tip.

Watchtower = Pharisees
by drwtsn32 inthe wts always talks about how wrong it was for the pharisees to make an endless number of rules.
but the wts is guilty of the same thing.
you can't have a beard... you can't watch rated r movies... you must report your field service activity... you cannot go to costume parties... you can have some blood fractions but not whole blood... you can't read any stuff that is against our opinion... yadda yadda yadda.. my mom (an active jw) argues that theses are not rules but only guidelines.

My husband started the thread on who you would most like to meet, and HE, last time I checked, was not mentioned on the thread. Neither was I, or thousands of others. My point is, don't worry about it! We all come here for our own reasons, and there are so many people here. It doesn't mean anyone means to slight you, just that the people who post the most often have the most admirers- it does not make any one poster better than another or even necessarily more liked, they are just better known because they are more vocal. So try not to take it personally, hang around and get to know people!

Nanu Nanu
( I read the first words and some insane connection in my brain immediately thought of the Mork & Mindy show and his response to messages from "the leader" - don't ask me why - must be lack of sleep)
On the more serious side, this is truly nauseating. "Yes, we are to obey them and be submissive, to yield, to them." Please pass a barf bag! That is just sick! To equate Christ's leadership with the elders is just insane, offensive and insulting! I also notice that Our Leader is not specifically defined, just capitalized to imply god-like status. I read that and I see "The Governing Body" but of course they mean to imply Jehovah's control over the whole situation. I am repulsed, and yet at the same time, greatly amused by this text. Ultimately, it is just so sad to have ever been controlled by these wackos and I am so grateful that this is no longer the case.
