  Did you have to try another church or religion on your way to unbelief?

  back in 1992 when i was slowly extricating my way out of the wacthtower, there was no internet, smart phones or any other type of quick data download available.

  i had basically 3 choices to obtain viewpoints from ex-jw's.. #1 - go to go to the library and look for books critical of the society.

  #2 - go to a christian book store to look for the same.. #3 - order item like these from addresses or phone numbers listed in the back of these publications.. and while doing any of these things, you were always looking over your shoulder to see if any "brothers" were around.. the problem i experienced is that virtually all of these books, while giving you good reason to doubt the watchtower, always pointed to "christendom" as the way you needed to go.

  I never attended another church per se, as I didn't see the need for an institution, ritual or history as prove of the superiority of one belief over another. Picking another flavour of god belief seemed too easy and faith is too close to wishful thinking IMO

  I did talk with a variety of people who had different beliefs about god and spirituality. It seemed most were looking for the same thing but were taking different roads to it. Since none could prove their claim more than any other, all seemed as valid as the next and paradoxically, as irrelevant. Anyone who wants me to agree with their religious views usually isn't open to hearing about mine, and that tells me a lot.

  At what age do people 'wake up'?

  i was thinking about this question recently after being at the meeting when new pioneers were announced for the 2013 service year.. we have a dozen or so pioneers in the congregation, and most are in their 20's.

  some absolutely love the things they are taught and can't wait to spread the good news.. others in the congregation are going through the motions, tired of hearing the same old same old but have no way to change things now.

  then there are a couple like me.

  I began to question and doubt in my teens. Oh, the battles of reason vs belief that went on. A few key issues of belief and practise that didn't add up. At 17, I was all but convinced this religion wasn't what it said it was. I left home at 18 and stopped going to meetings for the most part. I attended the memorials and my brother's baptism at 21 or so but that was it; haven't attended since. Much of this was also due to teen rebellion to an extent, wanting to choose my own path, friends and likes/dislikes.

  Do you ever just start CRYING for apparently no reason?

  i spoke to a friend of mine about this not too long ago.. we are "of a certain age".. the subject came up somehow.. .

  i'll be watching a tv commercial or i'll see some people in a park or a simple passing thought will suddenly induce a profound.

  Yes, it's been known to happen, though never for no reason. Usually there's a moment of profound realization or empathy involved. Not always a sad thing. It's good to feel.

  so there was this great gang of us, from south london, manchester and wolverhampton, went to socialise with a group in fishguard in wales.. amongst the conversations one of the single sisters stated, "i could never marry anybody who used to be in the world".. i guess a lifetime of knocking on doors had given her the impression there couldnt possibly be a convert in her midst, never mind later alone with her in her mgb.. so whats with this, did you think we had rat scabies or were possesed by demons or something?.

  Actually, as a dub kid, I kinda admired converts, those who chose the truth. They had seen the "other side" and had experience out in the "world". They weren't doing it because they didn't know anything else; they made a choice at least.

  As for the fact such ones seemed a lower caste within the ranks was not right in my mind. If anything, they validated the "truth".

  So much bs there in hindsight. Glad it's the past.

  Well at least we agree on this. Funny, I thought you had respect for conspiracy theory and it's adherents. So much more informed, enlightened and mature than the rest of us "sheeple", an example we all should emulate.

  Well, after some thought, there is something to be said for CG in the post dub world.

  I would agree with the thought that all mould their worldview to something that fits with their beliefs, to a degree.

  I consider myself a skeptic rather than a cynic, but I've been called naive more than once on these threads. Simply for trusting that institutions generally operate under the mandate by which they were formed.

  Sticks and stones. I tend not to take to heart those who call me down because they don't agree with me. It reflects more on their character than mine.

  i was trying to think of all the many many people i've ever met and conculded that none of them could be termed "normal".

  some of them might have seemed normal to start with but on further inspection most definatly not!.

  in answer to the obvious question no i do not think i'm normal neither, i don't think i would want to be either.
