too funny... This guy is mentioned on the same page as Jehovahkill. Even typing that name sends shivers down my spine. -silent

"Neutrality" is Nonsense
by metatron ini have observed some people drifting away from the watchtower who will acknowledge that most witness beliefs are false.. however, they may still cling to "neutrality" as a means of assuring themselves that "it's still the truth".
the witness idea of neutrality is naive.
as entire nations now mobilize for wars, the idea that you are somehow 'not part of it'.

the only reason the witnesses had a problem with the nazis was that they negatively impacted their book sales. period. the only reasons the watchtower ever has a problem with a government is when the government impacts their bottom line.

Here's an actual Napoleon Dynamite quote that might be relavent conclusion:
BEGIN: "And when it comes to selecting entertainment,"
QUOTE: "Just follow your heart. That's what I do."
Also, work in a quote with the UN as a source....

Made in the Image of a Humourless GOD
by unclebruce inmade in the image of a humourless god
there are a number of references in the bible of man being made in the image of yhwh/jehovah and god said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness genesis 1:26 for a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of god: but the woman is the glory of the man.1 corinthians 11:7. .
the only actual characteristics that can be attributed to the christian god jehovah can be found in the bible.

unclebruce,
God has a sense of humor. For example, the part of the world literally floating on oil
(the Middle East) is filled with a bunch of lunatics (anyone who kills someone else over a cartoon is crazy). Why, couldn't all that oil be in a place filled with sensible, calm people like Switzerland or Northern Europe?

Projected growth of the Watchtower Society
by Elsewhere ini took the growth figures from 1945 through 2005 and use the past growth rates to predict the future rates and this is what i got.... by 2010 the growth rate will reach 0 and after that the average number of publishers will start to go down.
their average number of publishers should stop rising at about 6.6 million members and by 2025 they should be back to 5 million.
it took them 122 years to reach 5 million publishers and it will only take 10 years to go back to 5 million publishers after they peak out at 6.6 million in 2010. .

Really, good work Elsewhere.
Actually, there are statistical methods to predict "non-linear" events, but they are rather involved, ans also don't work so well for such small data sets. Actually, you're model is quite reasonable, and (most importantly) fits the context of the data (i.e., is consistent with "outside" information that we all have).

ah, linear extrapolation. :-) I'm a geek too... so let me play Rutherford's err the Devil's advocate :-)
Your extrapalation assumes a lack of "singularitity events" ala 1975. (where the derivative of the rate of change goes caca-cooie) I see one biggie on the horizon: 2014. Do you think that will cause deviation from the trend? Actually, 1975 didn't get rolling until circa 1967-68. So, extrapolating, they may yet bring back the "greatest generation" for one last go. Then, that could be modeled by a swing similar to the one observed around 1975 (albeit smaller in magnitude to reflect 2 differences: 1) harder sale the second time around and 2) the number of publishers is larger. Of course, you didn't include 2034. :-) Good work Elsewhere. I love numbers and playing "what-if" scenarios Actually my work involves data mining and machine learning. I should play with their data one day....

WTS: NO MORE BOUND VOLUMES AFTER THIS YEAR!
by Mary ini just found out today (from my sister) that crooklyn will not be making any more bound volumes of the watchtower or awake magazines after this year------instead, they're all going to be on audio tape only.
she does not have a computer so i generously
i think this could very well be yet another tactic of the gb trying to keep a lid on their "embarassing" quotes of yesterday.

"Dudes, you can't be serious. You paid NOTHING to produce this, and you want $50?!?"
----------------------------------------
That's actually WRONG. They DID pay $$$ to produce the first version. The WT actually hired an outside company to write the interface application that is used on the CD-ROM. Basically, the CD-ROM has 2 parts: a program that loads the data and the data itself. The data is the "BIG FILE" (~several GB). The idea is that the data can be updated, but as long as the format stays the same the application can parse the data file. Standard stuff. It does seem they have improved the application over time, but the main cost was writing the FIRST one.
They went el-cheapo and did not produce a Mac version, because of licensing issues and not wanting to pay for 2 seperate versions of the initial application. I know this FIRST HAND because I meant one of the programmers out in field service (he was visiting relatives in upstate NY, and he answered the door one random Saturday morning).
Now, I'm NOT justifying the $50 price. They're distribution + marketing costs are minimal, and they shouldn't be turning a profit. But, 25 cent price is only the MARGINAL COST of the CD, and does not include the initial FIXED cost.
Actually, I think they contracted out MIPS as well. Not many window-washers can actually code, and those that do end up visiting apostate websites. or at least this one did :-) -

Paranoia and Arrogance, how closely are they linked?
by AlmostAtheist ini was the 6th person in an elevator car today, which meant i had to stand in the middle.
everyone else was against a wall and there i was, on display.
this is always an uncomfortable spot for me.
-
silentWatcher
I immediately feel put on the spot, "I *should* know this!
--------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think that's arrogance. I think it means you have a high sense of resposibility and self-consciousness. You care what other people think, which is sometimes a good thing. As long as the feeling of being put on the spot doesn't overwelm you, then it's okay to feel that way.
Paranoia is the pathological extreme of this condition. And yes, there is a clinical defintion for paranoia listed in the DSM IV guide that psychologists use.
besides, who in their right mind expects Fry to know the answer to anything? ;-)
