May I pay for your wedding? And your baby shower? and your house warming?
by LDH inok i know it was not just upstate new york that had this problem.
of all the jw weddings i went to, i can think of 3 that were catered.
all the rest, the congregation members paid for.

Atheists Worst Nightmare!
by SickofLies ini don't know how i ever doubted that intelligent design was correct!
after watching a video involving kirk cameron, i now see the error of my ways, and will be tithing 50% of my income to the church every month out of contrition.. .
you want to know the mighty argument that changed my views, and my life, forever?

For jw .... if you don't mind my asking, how long have you been a jw?
by jgnat inhow long did you study before you got baptized?.
were there any long standing habits you had to get rid of before you got baptized?.
do you bring your children to the meetings?.

Have you ever had a prayer answered?
by nicolaou inprayer topics seem to be the bandwagon of the moment so i'm jumping on!
seriously, has anyone here asked for something specific in prayer and actually gotten what they asked for?
what convinces you that you wouldn't have got it in any case?

I remember praying that I could fall asleep at the assembly, and my prayer was always answered. Further, I'm positive jeh-hoggie had something to do with it.

Pink slips at Bethel
by beavis indoes anyone still have any friends at bethel?
it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.
the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.

A chiropractor at Bethel injured herself, sued for diability / workman's compensation on grounds she was an employee. WT claimed she was member of religious order and they were not liable. NY state court ruled in her favor, and ruled that most Bethelites should be classfied as employees.
After the judgement, Jehovah provided the wonderful provision of the massive downsizing. :-)
I can't find the article; but it was commented on here awhile back.

Attended the Circuit Assembly - the work IS slowing down.
by jgnat inonly two baptisms, two, count 'em.
both were obviously children of jw's.
the last circuit assembly there were at least a dozen.

Yeah, but I remember when I was a kid-dub, being baptized at the district convention was "cooler" than at a SAD or CA. More people you knew from other congregations were there. Then again, if you were baptized alone at a SAD or CA you might have more attention.
Then again, I couldn't care less anymore.

Rent vs. Buying a house
by Elsewhere in.
i have started thinking about buying a house again.
something that drives me nuts is the fact that i can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone as to whether or not owning a house would be financially better than renting an apartment.. things to take into consideration:how much i pay in rent.how much rent increases each year.how much i pay in renters insurance.how much a mortgage would be.how much pmi or an 80 / xx mortgage would be.how much i would have to take from or borrow from my 401ks and iras for a down payment.how much i will have to pay in penalties for taking money from my 401ks and iras.how much money l will loose by not having that 401k money earning interest.how much maintenance on the property will cost.how much insurance will cost.how much i will be paying in property taxes.how much in "freebies" i will get from the seller (they will pay $xxx in closing costs if i use their mortgage company).other crap i haven't thought of yet.. it seems like everyone i talk to has their own agenda and they all give me different results based on they want me to do so they will get more money from me.

Hi Elsewhere,
I owned a house, which I sold before going back to school. What galled me were property taxes, which seemed to rise exponentially (at least in upstate NY). Property taxes ran ~3% of assested value in that area or $30 per $1000 assested value when school, county, and city taxes were combined.
Personally, I will never buy a house again. I may buy a condo or town house at some point. But, since I'm moving to San Jose next fall (for the next few years at least), buying will likely not be an option. :-(

Thanks Elsewhere. What is so special about this talk? From my 3 minute skim, looks pretty similar to every other "special talk".

UPDATE 2: Since Freedom is Free, Why is it Taxed?
by RichieRich inyesterday after school i had to go work on a project with friends.
mom said be home by 5, but there was a huge accident a mile from where i live, and i sat on the road for like 10 - 12 minutes, and was 5 minutes late getting home.
mom was there (didn't go to work- guess why) and she was pissed.

hey kid-ass,
we all can do what we want. given the choice, I care more about children who have been abused, and think Silentlambs is a more worthy cause. None of those children posted photos of themselves on the net flipping off the Flock book, and then whining about mommy getting a little peeved afterward.
I care about those who have been abused. I guess you don't. That's okay.

New Invitations for the "Deliverance at Hand" DC
by dorayakii in.
the front of this new watchtower-sized invitation features a common painting of the jw paradise and the theme of his years distirct convention, "deliverance at hand" emblazened across the front.
it looks like they're trying to work up armageddon fervour again.. .

hey -- brilantt idea. Why doesn't someone print a version of the track, but replace watchtower.org with a more accurate website -- jehovahs-witness.com
Also, jehovahs-witness.com doesn't even break the first page of google... perhaps we could work on that.
