Yes. In the US, television stations have to donate a certain percentage of commercial air time to public-service announcements (PSAs) to keep their broadcast license. The donated time usually comes late at night or early in the morning, since it is given away for free. The television stations are free to pick whatever PSA they want to air. The most common (and famous) example of PSAs are the ones from the Ad Council ("Say NO to Drugs"; "This is Your Brain on Drugs"; "Only You can Prevent Forest Fires"). The stations usually have a rotation of PSAs that they play, and the content is non-controversial. The only stipulation is that the station cannot charge for the air time.
Religious groups can make PSAs as long as they are non-denominational. The Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints) are the most famous relgious PSAs, and usually have a message like "Stealing is bad" or "Murder is a no-no", and might quote a scripture. The Witnesses made some PSAs in the late 90's / early 00's, which were similar to the Mormon ones. I actually saw the JW commericals a few times. What tipped me off was the scripture was from the NWT and the "This message provided by the Jehovah's Witnesses".
Since the selection of PSAs is totally up to the station management, if the station manager was "friendly" to the Witnesses, Witness PSAs would make the rotation. I do know that the station management at WTVH-5 in Syracuse, NY has an active Witness in its management during the late 90's / early 00's. (Meant the guy through a family friend, so I know the details about the PSAs first hand...). Likely where the commericals got aired, a Witness knew someone at the station who made the decision on the PSAs to air. For example, I only saw the commercials on that ONE station.
bottom line: It cost the WT next to nothing, and was free air time.
sorry for the length of the post

May I pay for your wedding? And your baby shower? and your house warming?
by LDH inok i know it was not just upstate new york that had this problem.
of all the jw weddings i went to, i can think of 3 that were catered.
all the rest, the congregation members paid for.

Lisa, I'm having flashbacks to Auburn! I also think I know who you mean -- Paul Reed or Jerry Thompson (who reminds me of Moe from the 3 stoogies)? He actually wanted to block my grandfather from getting baptized. Whatever.
Actually, the problem for most Wit-lesses is they feel obligated to invite everyone in the congregation (~100 peeps). And if the bride and groom hail from different congregations, then ~200 peeps BEFORE family and friends. That makes catering impossible for anyone, especially if the parents have PhD's from Awake U.
My (worldly) cousin did it right -- invite a small number of family and friends (approximately 30 - 40 for each side: total 80 people), and have a really nice gathering. It was really initmate, and actually the most fun I've ever had at a wedding.

I have also alway's found this to be very contradictive.
----------------------------------------------------------------
not really. Supposedly, Jeh-hoggie can step in WHEN he wants to, but he chooses not to. I will never forget how a CO once put it: "Think of a playground. Jehovah is the teacher, in charge at all times. Satan is like a brat in a sandbox, and soon Jehovah is gonna give him a SPANKIN' he ain't gonna forget!".
Advocating child abuse. ugh.

the best I've ever seen were in the restrooms in the Engineering Buildings at Cornell: Differential equations on the stall doors. But, the best was the guy who corrected one of the equations. LOL.
That's my definition of hard-core.

i would say that there were maybe three or four families that came in regularly.. since the announcement was made though, i've had at least 35 diiferent people come in.

when they come and talk to you don't tell them your out

actually I agree with 2112 on this. If they want to talk to you, let 'em. Unless they are annoying, then by all means let them know.

Do they know who the "genuine" anointed are? If so, why not instruct elders of congregations where "non-genuine" anointed ones partake, not to count them?
--------------------------------------------
I thought they already do (to a limited extent). For example, if someone unbaptized partakes, they are not counted. If someone who is disfellowshipped partakes, they are not counted either. Those cases are easy.
Others are hard. In one congregation I went to growing up, there was an older brother (born into the truth in early 1920's) who claimed to be anointed suddenly in the late 1980's. He was baptized before 1935, but wasn't even a mike handler. The elders were actually split on whether the guy was genuine or just a kook.

Actually, our favorite Scholar is a shoo-in to win this. And I suggest when he does, he donate the proceeds to SilentLambs.
