Blues,
I must ask how old were you? I know lots of Jo Ho's that were made elders at 28, 29, 30 years of age. They also tended to elevate "brothers" that were pioneers and what not even earlier. These brothers had parents that supported them financially. They married the right Dub at 18 or 19. They truly hadn't been tested by fire. They had not had any personal crisis's of their own. It's easy to be judgemental when you have no concept of certain things.
I remember a BOE that counseled a friend of mine. They told him that since he could only come to the district assembly for 2 days he needed to "man up" and tell his employer he was going to go regardless of whether they would give him time off. So he got fired from his job.... had huge financial difficulites to find a new job and support his family....think the BOE was around to help him? NO!!! They then had the nerve to say that he needed to trust in Jehoba and he would provide.

I live my life as I feel it should be lived.
I do my best to do various community good type activities I can. I both support and help Doctors Without Borders, volunteer at a local free clinic one weekend a month. I've "earmarked" 10% of my income to donate to various charitable groups. I am involved and go to a Unitarian Church and a Buddhist Temple. I go when I WANT to go, and am happy when I do go. This is probably 2 times a month. At the clinic that I both partially own and manage we earmark 5% of our profits to go to local charity groups to help out the immediate community.
My job brings me great reward. I see people everyday that come into my office crippled up with pain. After, consulting with me and undergoing various options including surgery, they are back to pain free, healthy, happy adults again. Now, not everyone is as fortunate as this but my success rate is over 90% of people being happy with the results they seek after 1 year. I MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE EVERY DAY!!! How empowering this? When I get letters telling me what a difference I've made in people's lives it is humbling.
I also have time to pursue my hobby of glass blowing. I also have been fortunate enough to have the time and money to ride my moutain bike in many far off parts of the world. I have seen many of God's unique enviroments. I also surf and enjoy the enviroment.
Having said all that.... I try to live my live as balanced as I can. I think American's in particular are unbalanced in our work / leisure time. Our European cousins are more enlightened in this matter. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But it is MY life and try and do things that I WANT to do, not feel like I have to.
One of my buddhism teachers once told me, "Humility is knowing your limits. It is also knowing when to ask for help". I had never thought of humility this way. We as western culture tend to tell ourselves we can do anything we set our mind to. This is true to an extent, but at what personal sacrifice? Also, by asking for help we realize we may not know everything. -

It's just another control mechanism...women are weaker therefore should listen to the elders and their husbands come hell or high water.
Just like they control the men with yanking their "priveleges". It's truly not about the "priveleges" themselves but the loss of an activity that garners them respect within the congregation.
JW's behavior with women is only about 50 years out of date. -

Generally they will answer your question like a politician....meaning when you think back on their answer they never really said anything at all except simply let their lips flap for a bit, then circled around and presented the next "Conversation Stopper" before you have a chance to realize what just happened.

Heat,
I was counseled as a young boy about not wanting to be an astronaut.
I also remember an assembly part about sci fi and space travel. The bible clearly shows us we have an "Earthly Hope" as the speaker pointed out. Thus watching Star Trek and wanting to think about populating other planets was Satanic thinking.... We are thinking about becoming more than our Creator intended, as Satan did in the Garden of Eden. Our paradise was our only destiny...oh wait destiny is bad too....

AN EXCUSE TO HATE?
by Terry ini ask this question rather seriously.
isn't religion actually an excuse to hate?
you quickly learn us vs them and who is who.

Ed,
While that may be true of the American Indian's religious beliefs they certainly warred with competing tribes. Thus certainly had an outlet for their "hatred".
Mabye it's because one of the only socially acceptable form of hatred anymore...."religion". We are too advanced to hate people simply for their skin color, sexual orientation, nationality, or language. Maybe as part of our progression as a species this religious "hate" will be the next to slowly fade into the annals of history :) -

Six Billion Hearts Will Soon Stop Beating. . .
by ACEofCAD inannounced our circuit overseer last night in his talk about the urgency to preach because of the times.
followed by a silence that was broken with ohhhs and ahhhs.
he said that a couple of times throughout his part, simulating a beating heart with his fist.

Welcome SHANTI !!!
Like I've mentioned above...I just wished 6 million JW mouths would quit flapping instead of worrying about 6 billion hearts.
