Going in a week. Will see a show or two, will play in the shark pool at the Golden Nugget, see the free entertainment on Fremont St. and will play some Pai Gow. Think I will give the meetings a skip. Who am I trying to impress?....

"Banned in Brooklyn"
by Quendi ini hope this thread generates some discussion as well as some amusement.
i want to talk about "banned books".
back in the middle ages, the roman catholic church issued its index librorum prohibitorum, the list of prohibited books.

Hi, Quendi. Your name was a dead giveaway that you are a Tolkien devotee!
I knew one uber-Witness that wouldn't even let his kids watch cartoons! One time, someone invited him and his family over to watch
"101 Dalmatians." He declined, saying he couldn't let his family watch a movie like that. This surprised the other Witness, who wanted to know why
he objected. The answer: "Come on, Brother! You know Dogs Can't Talk!"

Am I wrong for being angry at my dads funeral last year?

it's 5:30 am and i been in and out of sleep all night.
let me go into further detail to explain.

A few years back, I was at the funeral of an elder who was very well respected. I will say his last name was "Hilton".
The talk was given by a (supposedly) long time friend of his in the org. So, I listened in amazement and anger as this "longtime friend"
kept mispronouncing the deceased's name as "Wilton". He did it consistently through the entire talk! About halfway into it, I saw a couple (not Witnesses)
get up and leave. The expressions on their faces were ones of anger and disgust.
I have been to non Witness funerals as well. Much better at the effort of remembering the deceased. Slide shows of the person in life, with family and friends, speeches given by family members. No rush to sweep the dead guy under the rug. Some of the ministers' sermons have been pretty weak tea, though.
I am contemplating how things are to be handled for my parents when they pass. I know my dad won't be getting a Witness Funeral (tm). I imagine I myself will have to give the eulogy at his remembrance service. But I think that is how it should be. I would much rather hear and talk about funny or warm anecdotes than about some afterlife reward that is all bullcrap anyway.

Rutherford and the new DVD
by truthlover incan anyone tell me why rutherford is not shown giving a talk or speaking in public?
i noticed that russell was on film in the first dvd -out of darkness but rutherford was shown in a picture only - never speaking or doing a public presentation, same goes for the second one -they have an actor portraying him... was there a reason?
was his persona that bad?

CaptainSchmideo
One recording I heard of him reminded me of the worst in Baptist/Fundamentalist Bible screamers.
Maybe that's why.
And you are right, Russell was not a pleasant personality at all. He was the antithesis to C. T. Russell, and contributed in large measure to the big split after Russell's death.

"If Armageddon came in '75, the new ones would have died"
by Lore inthat was the reasoning in a recent public talk at my hall.. namely: if the end of the world happened in 1975, then loads of people who had not yet converted or been born would have been destroyed, or never existed, so therefore we should be happy that yahweh was patient and armageddon hasn't come yet.. .
anyone else see like 5 blaringly horrible problems with this reasoning?.
#1 that will never stop being true!
