by nolongerconfused inperhaps, one of the most arrogant and contradicting behaviors of jdubs.... what is the difference between celebrating a baby shower and a birthday?...they both have ancient origins, from pagan people, including egyptians and the greek.... have you guys noticed any other hypocrite celebrations/behaviors jdubs engage in?.

The WTS is a grandmaster in the use of "hyperbole". Or, as it is often mispronounced, "hyperboyle".

One last sales pitch for the corporation
by hoser ini went to a jw funeral today.
it was the worst ever.
about two minutes talking about the life of the deceased and the rest about the borg.

And when they talk about the deceased, they are simply reading the same damn thing as the obituary in the newspaper. And considering how poor some of these speakers are at reading, it sounds stilted as hell. Why not just bring the newspaper up to the podium ("and in Sports, the Dodgers are up 3 to 2 over the Cardinals in the playoffs. 10% sale on all jewelry at Zales!")

I have been watching many of the older ones, Pioneers and those that never really saved anything or prepared for old age, get hit with a hard crash of reality these past few years. They weren't supposed to get this old! They were never going to get so sick that they couldn't walk, or breathe properly, or lose their mental acuity, and I am sure it really frightens them. And they STILL keeps saying "oh, this System CAN'T go on much longer! We can see it all the time now! It just can't!" Meanwhile, no savings, no way of dealing with astronomical healthcosts, no preparation for anything. Staring at a long time period of sitting in a wheelchair, waiting for a day that will never, ever come, until death finally grants them a release from their futile hope.

Old out-of-touch JWs using antiquated terms
by sir82 inever notice how completely out of touch some (most?
) public speakers are?.
last week we had a speaker ramble on for fully 1/3, maybe 1/2, of his 30 minute talk on the evils of "rap music".. i don't believe the term "rap music" has been uttered by anyone under the age of 40 for at least 20-25 years.. this week we got another "older gentleman" warning us about the pervasive dangers of "internet chat rooms".. again - didn't "chat rooms" die out about the same time as dialing up to connect to aol?.

I remember a speaker at a Circuit Assembly in the 90's that went on about the evils of popular music, citing "Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride". Um, dude? Those songs went out with the movie "Easy Rider" and Peter Fonda (who?).
Unbelievably out of touch, no wonder the kids roll their eyes and want to escape...

It demonstrates, in video form, the entire lack of trust that the older generation has for the younger generation.
No one trusts their kids, period.Leave a teen alone for 30 minutes, he'll start surfing porn on the net, or doing drugs.
Leave a male and female teen alone for 10 minutes, they'll start humping like rabbits.
Let them read anything, listen to anything, or watch anything, they'll abandon Jehovah at the drop of a hat.
Leaving home at 21 is "like a death"? Wow!
The 'real world' is going to eat these kids alive.

Experience at a get together recently
by CaptainSchmideo inevery so often, i will get invites to social gatherings from people from my old congregation (not the one i currently attend).
recently, it was for a high school graduation of the son of people i grew up with.. so, a curious thing happens (and happens every time i go to one of these things).. the old timers start quizzing me about my mom (who hasn't gone to meetings in years) and my brother (who has spotty attendance, apparently), and they assume that i am still attending regularly (i don't volunteer anything different).. .
i really resent being interrogated about my family members, it's like i am volunteering information to "big brother".

Larry-no alcohol, but the theme was "dress as your favorite sports team", so I am sure Gerrit Loesch would not have approved. Plus, I left when they started in with the loud music. I don't object to music, or even loud music, but loud, crappy music will give me a headache faster than listening to an assembly part.

Every so often, I will get invites to social gatherings from people from my old congregation (not the one I currently attend). Recently, it was for a High School graduation of the son of people I grew up with.
So, a curious thing happens (and happens every time I go to one of these things).
The old timers start quizzing me about my mom (who hasn't gone to meetings in years) and my brother (who has spotty attendance, apparently), and they assume that I am still attending regularly (I don't volunteer anything different).
I really resent being interrogated about my family members, it's like I am volunteering information to "Big Brother". I just came to have some semi-warm chicken and casserole lasagna, bring a card, and see some friends! If you want to know what's going on, get off your ass and send a card to my mom or brother directly!
Same thing with my uncle (mom's brother). Calls me up, starts the interrogation in about 60 seconds, can't find anything else to say, doesn't seem real interested in stories about my kids and their accomplishments, or anything very interesting in his life. But "are you going to meetings?" THAT's the big question.
And then the same old same old about how things are moving along quickly, the end is almost here. Gee, I heard this at MY high school graduation, 30 fricking years ago! Get a new song to sing, please!I really feel sorry for these old people, waiting at a train station for a ride that is never going to come, meanwhile, the grass has grown over the tracks, their lives are irretrievably spent on nothing, their spouses and friends are all dying from old age and age related illness, they have family members they haven't spoken to for years over worthless "stands for the Truth."
Talking to the graduating kid, he's going to Pioneer (tm) and then start working for his dad. No talk of college, no talk of additional training. Welcome to the rest of your life, kid.
Talking to another, a young girl, surprise, she IS going to college in the fall, as soon as she decides where to go (it's a little late in the summer to start thinking about it, but, HEY, it's promising, anyway.) Good for her! I nearly shout.
I am so glad that quit buying into the bull when my kids were still young. They never got indoctrinated, and they smell it for the excrement it is. And what I find so interesting is that they are so...normal. Other than the normal teenage angst and worries, I haven't had to deal with drugs, drinking, skirt chasing, delinquency or all those other things that we were so constantly warned about that "worldly teens" experience. They are, in a nutshell, 'good kids'. Their teachers at school think they are great (high scores on their AP tests, one kid is probably going to be Valedictorian (in a very high expectations type of High School)), their employers wish they had more workers like them, they have decent friends that I don't worry about them hanging out with. Kids any parent would be proud to know and grateful to call their own. Of course, my mother in law (their grandmother) thinks they are disappointments, because they don't have any interest in "The Truth'. Amazing!
Sorry, I got off on a ramble, but once I got typing, I went into "free form". Anyway, thanks for reading my vent.... -

Agag was the Amalekite king that Saul did not kill, as he was ordered to by God (through Samuel). Samuel had to do the dirty work for him. But, once again, they didn't eradicate them all (genocide in ancient times was a haphazard thing, I suppose).
If you want to see a VERY high dollar production of the story of Esther, find the movie "One Night With the King". Cameos abound, with Peter O'Toole as a very old Samuel in the prologue, and John Rhys Davies as Mordecai (Sallah from the "Indiana Jones" movies, and Gimli from "Lord of the Rings".) The movie itself looks like they took many production cues from "Lord of the Rings". One hilarious apochryphal detail has Haman wearing an amulet with (wait for it...) a symbol that looks very much like a Swastika. It's not a bad film, it's just, well, "bad" in a good way.
