my wife and i have been reading " releasing the bonds " by steve hassan and it makes some interesting points about assisting people to get out of any cult.
notice this excerpt from chapter 6 from the book.
hassan states, " it is also important to understand that in most bible -based cults, although the member is aggressively taught doctrine, it is not the doctrine that holds him in the group.
My friend and I each have loved ones enslaved in the WTS, and we both have a burden on our hearts to see them set FREE. We both have had many, many conversations with our JW loved ones, and have tried to pose some good thought-provoking questions to try to get them to see the light; but the questions and discussions were mostly about doctrine. Needless to say, we both have gotten NO WHERE fast. No matter what you say, the JWs always come back with some "answer". They twist scripture to fit their beliefs.
I'm beginning to think my friend and I should try something different. Instead of debating doctrine, perhaps we should concentrate on showing the falsehoods, lies, etc of the ORGANIZATION ITSELF. What do you think?
PS: Happy birthday, Mr Flipper!

i posed this question on another thread... namely burns and hooberus...wouldn't answer, so i thought i'd ask it again in an open thread..., .
you on the right disagree with roe v wade... so that means that you want to redefine when a zygote, embryo, or a fetus has what anyone would rule for lack of better words "the right to life"... .
exactly when is life, human as per your definition?
What should be the penalty for those who abort early in the pregnancy (say before 5 weeks) If you consider abortion murder and that life begins at conception?
And I'll ask again, what about rape and incest? Should there be laws that make someone have the baby after rape.,.,. I'm talking law here not personal opinions.
Dawg, these are really tough, but good questions. To be very honest with you, I just don't know what the answer is.
All I know, deep down in my spirit, is that abortion is wrong. The Bible says in Proverbs 6:16,17 that "the Lord hates hands that shed innocent blood". How much more innocent is a little, defenseless child in the womb?

I'd say its a group of cells that have been fertilized, the lumps of fertilized cells I've seen (blastocysts I believe it's defined) certainly look like numerous cells I've seen under a scope. If no one told me what it was, I'd of thought I was looking at skin and blood cells combined... I'd of never guessed it was even human...
Dawg, this is what YOU, and ALL of us, used to look like when we were conceived in our mother's womb. Just b/c we once looked like this....doesn't mean we weren't human.
Again I ask, if a Zygote is not human......then what is it??

yet I can't say that I believe a zygote is a Human... not at all...
If it's not human.....then...what is it, Dawg??

Life starts at conception. When sperm & egg unite, a new life begins.
Abortion is the ultimate child abuse.
.."except these necessary things, to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled...."
everyone that eats meat also consumes some whole animal blood with it and that does not violate the bible injunction on blood.
god allows it.
Blood is sacred to God because it is a symbol of LIFE. So.....what means MORE to God? The symbol.........or the ACTUAL LIFE of a person??
It's pretty much a no-brainer.

hi everyone, i have been lurking for a very long time and have been pretty much blown away and sickened by what i have learned on this discussion forum (this is actually the first forum i had ever visted).
i am married to man who was not a jw when i met him (although he was raised as one from his early teens but left when he was in his 20's, oh and that was when he started attending college), to make a long story short we met, fell in love, got married, had a few children and then 20 yrs later he started attending the "meetings" or better yet "the indoctrination sessions" again, which btw he did not tell me that that was what he was doing!!
shortly thereafter i began noticing changes in his personality, and it wasn't for the better.
Hello cjones!
I'm so sorry about your husband. It's a heartbreaking situation. Educating yourself about the WTS is one of the best things you can do. Then, if you could try to very gently & respectfully plant seeds of doubt in his mind about the organization.
May I suggest Rev. Wilbur Lingle's book: Approaching Jehovah's Witnesses In Love: How To Witness Effectively Without Arguing. This book has been a God-send for me......as I'm trying to help my son see that the WTS organization is NOT what it claims to be. Rev Lingle has come up with some excellent questions to ask our JW loved ones & friends. Questions that will make them think for themselves......instead of just swallowing whole what the WTS feeds them.
Blessings to you,
Lavendar
