Just have to share a favorite joke here:
Q: How many drummers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Don't they have machines to do that these days?
The husband is a drummer, so I have many of these names drilled in my head. His all time favorite is a bit more modern though; Manu Katché. He has worked with Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tori Amos and others. I don't have a great understanding of the art, but I have developed an appreciation for it.

DF unbaptized ones
by juni insorry about format.
i'll try again to make it easier to read.
does anyone remember the practice used in the 80's of df unbaptized ones if they were unrepentent wrong doers?

Juni, It happened to me. I'm afraid that my memory is a bit fuzzy, either because I have tried to block it out, or because I had so many other things going on, what with being pregnant and all.
I was 17 years old, and it was either 1988 or early 1989. I don't know anything about a lawsuit though. All I really know is that friends of mine were so excited because they read in a magazine that they were allowed to speak to me again, although with caution.
The topic was discussed during a meeting, and later during announcements the elder said "The matter involving {insert name here} has been dealt with" or something to that effect.
I'm not sure if that helps at all. -

DO YOU BLOG?
by Terry ini just started doing this (blogging) and it is not unlike writing a diary put into public view.. there a zillions of these things floating around out there.
many are extremely inventive, artistic, interesting and startling.. however, most are utterly inane!.
sturgeon's law at work.

For the inane stuff, I keep a journal, I have since I was about 8. I recently started using the blog on myspace. I have friends in far places, and the blogs help us keep in touch with what is going on. I have noticed that I write very differently when I know someone has access to the words, so I don't see it taking the place of my journal.

Any gardeners out there?
by Banshee inwell, are there any people on this db who are into gardening?.
i really love it, myself.

I think this post is a strange coincidence. I joined the forum to try to grow the soul (or whatever it is in me that has been stunted). This same year I tried gardening for the first time. I have five rosemary plants, two cherry tomato plants, two basil plants and four corkscrew vines. I've always thought my thumb was black, but so far things are going well. Thanks for the advice here. I never thought being a newbie at JWD would connect with being a newbie at gardening.

Ex's Who Can't Abide Ex's
by Englishman inmost of the "real life ex's" that i have met don't want anything to do with other ex's.
these are people who don't like ex-dub boards.
in fact they don't have much time for other ex's, full stop.

If you had asked me 10 years ago, 5 years ago, or even one year ago if I would ever be interested in a forum like this, I would have said no. I didn't know any other exJWs, and I didn't really want to discuss the issue. I was too busy getting on with my life. But it caught up with me. I'm just thankful that this place exits, because it is truly needed.

Examples of JW evasiveness/dishonesty
by BONEZZ inbeing born and bred into the borg i always felt it was the "truth" but i wasn't the one who measured up i was not good enough to be a dub.
but i also had nagging questions that went unanswered by the most learned elders...or at least not answered to my satisfaction.
their "answers" were in fact not really answers but side-steps or attempts to mis-direct my question into an area they could answer.. an example...it always bothered me that we could not examine the contents of what opposers put out.

They told me Big J reads hearts and all those kids were evil.
I remember getting an answer similar to that, but then what about free will, which I was always told was a gift from j. If the little babies in S&G were born evil, then they didn't really have free will, if J just knew that they would turn out evil, that's predetermination.
Around and around we go... The end result was always, "You can't understand the mind of god, because he's perfect and we are not". Or something to that effect. -

I asked a lot of these same questions, and of course at some point the answer was that I had to accept these things and that god could not really be understood by my imperfect little mind.
The old testament used to really trip me up. God was responsible for the deaths of so many cute little lambs and babies. The Sodom and Gomorrah story is a good example. I remember asking my mother if there were any little kids there, and was it really fair not to give them a chance. There are tons of others. No one could ever really justify those things to my satisfaction. -

The Second Amendment
by Englishman ini like guns.
i like the feel of them.
i like the fine engineering too.
-

Isn't it hight time that the second amendment was amended?
I truly agree. I wish I could bring back some of the original writers of that esteemed document to get their opinion on this matter. They had some very good reasons for the Second Amendment, but I think we have to compare the spirit that it was written in against the practical implications of guns as they are today. Our govenor recently vetoed a bill that would allow guns in bars (unless bar owners posted a sign against it). The thing that scares me is that the bill made it that far.
The issue reminds me a little of a well esteemed book that says we must not partake of blood, and some people who use that ancient document as a reason not to take advantage of current medical advances. -

microphones were the last straw
by ivy init wasn't the big stuff that made me decide i could never go back, it was one little thing.
i have been thinking about my journey out of "the truth", and i think i can pin-point the last straw.. .
i had been out for years, but always thinking that if i got my head together someday i would be good enough to go back.

The term cognitive dissonance was familiar, but I had to look it up. So relevent, to me personally and the whole JW institution. Now I'll have to learn more about it. Thanks for adding to my ever increasing reading list tetrapod.
My early childhood JW education and feminist college education are in constant combat.
Facial hair and adultery seem to be common themes here. Is that beard thing arbitrary, or is there a scriptual reason for it? Is it true world wide? At least you guys got to handle the mics, although I'm sure I would have done a better job.
It seems that elders are completly incabable of handling a situation of adultery with any compassion or even intellegence. I remember my mother went to the elders with suspicions that my father was having an affair, which he was, but that didn't come out until much later. It's true that she had no proof, but they actually suggested that she was accusing him because she had a guilty conscience. My mother is the closest thing to a perfect JW I have ever met. She went to them for guidence and they accused her. Wish she had the good sense to be "stumbled" by that.
