For all the scriptual advice/talks that are given on materiallism and enviousness, I've never seen a group of people that almost compulsively dwell on materialism and enviousness...
i knew of a slew of jw revelers that got into trouble with the elders for "celebrating" the holiday with fireworks and/or a picnic.. did you ever get counseled for celebrating a nation's birthday?>.
I'm surprised that people got scolded for just watching the fireworks when bethelites went to the roof and brought up guests to watch the fireworks. Bethel in Brooklyn had the best view of it and they did this every year.
As stated, I would be surprised also. I was at Bethel in 1976 and the fireworks that year was incredible. The Bethel roofs (Tower and 124) were pretty full. Another year I remember going to an elders house for a picnic and fireworks. His house was in a prime viewing area.
i was supposed to fly tommorrow but i put off booking the tickets....and now i've chickened out and will take an 11 hour train ride all night...compared to 1 hour flight.
i have butterflys in my stomach and i can't relax.
i don't trust airplanes or pilots!
I've racked well over a hundred flights so far in my life. Been on a number of flights where the pilot has told the stewards and passengers to strap themselves in tight. Been through bad weather to the point where you could hear the luggage in the hold bouncing off the floor. These kind of flights are very few and pilots will do their best to avoid tubulance. Most flights you can hardly tell that you are off the ground. Planes will take more abuse than most of the people who ride in them. As mentioned, flying really is quite safe.

at latest round of co to elders meeting, the co quoted from the society outline.
any elder or ms who encourages college for his kids or others or who allows his children to go to college will no longer qualify.. he then asked if i was going to take the cos encouragement and reach out again to be an elder and get my hours on the ministry up.. i replied "i will never be an elder again - i strongly approve of further education and college and have been through college myself.
In the 80s I attended a community college in hopes that it would be useful to Bethel service. At the Bethel meeting and interview, the brother told me that Bethel needed spiritual men, and would give the training needed. I should review what was published about the dangers of higher education, and it would call my spirituality and my father's qualifications into question. In a roundabout way, he told me that I should quit school and pioneer, since the end was sooooo close. So, I did. Then, I went to Bethel, and I found.... COLLEGE GRADUATES WERE ACCEPTED AND BLESSED !!!!
When I was at Bethel I knew a good number who had college degrees, most obtained before becoming JW's. Oddly enough these college grads ended up with the better jobs, which was not a lost observation on a lot of us who bought into the college not helping you get ahead mantra.
i know this is kind of off topic but i was wondering if any of you know of a reliable data recovery company here in the us that is not too expensive.
my 250gb secondary hard drive with all my important business data decided to stop working and my backup's aren't working either.
basically the drive will power up, then it sounds like it's trying to search and then it will spin down.

As for price, the service one of our company site uses, it is $400 just to look at the drive and make a determination if anything can be recovered and how much. The complete cost can go as high, in the one case I know of, approximately $2000.00

Started while in with no objection from BOE; had left Bethel just weeks prior. Got an associates degree, then bachelors. Currently working on a masters degree.

Since 2000 my income has gone up almsot $34k a year. Those college degrees really do pay off. Company car that pays for gas and I usually get to work from home to avoid going into the office to work. Despite that I realize my job could vanish at any time and I live frugally. I live more cheaply now than I did when I had less money.
right off the bat i am going to say that i understand there are a few bethelites and ex-bethelites here and i have no intention of offending anyone.
i have read the posts you've made and have enjoyed them and respect your individual points of view.
that said, i need to ask the board if they have noticed anything peculiar about the folks coming out of beth-hell?
While at Bethel at the table next to mine there was a married couple. Was a couple times she came to the table with black and blue marks on her face. Her husband was known to be a bit short tempered.
There were a number of "mental cases" that I knew of that were there for a short period of time. The elders in the congregation thought their going to Bethel would be good for them, like going to rehab.
As for the two examples given at the start of this thread. You can probably bet that the these guys father treated there mothers like that. This kind of behavior is generally learned long before they are old enough to enter Bethel.
