Jesus' Answer for a Sign
by Friend inthe following was originally written as part of a response to criticisms against the belief that the synoptic gospel contains jesus' answer for a sign of his parousia that is realized today.
some of the language is then necessarily a bit unusual because of the originally intended audience.
lately this subject has come up in other circles so i chose to also post the comments to this forum.

Did not Paul categorically claim that the gospel had already been taken to the "whole world"?

Disfellowshipping, again
by somebody ini'm trying to gather every scripture used to imply that the practice of disfellowshipping among christians is scriptual.
please notice that i did not say "to imply that the "idea" is scriptual, but the "practice".
any input would be of help.

Now your're not suggesting, Somebody, that Paul, our dearest of apostles, would teach anything other than the teachings of Jesus? What an idea!

? About Paraclete
by Carmel insince its been over four decades since i was a "witness" i don't recall what the jw thinking was concerning the johannine paraclete passages, jn 14:16,26, 15:26 and 16:7. i was in a study class last evening and was asked about the jw beliefs.
i understand that most christians accept the rendition that these promises were fulfilled at penticost, but i don't remember these scriptures playing much of a role for jw doctrin as they believed jesus had already "returned" but not in the "flesh".. anyone can help?.

Thanks for the come back Waiting. I've always had trouble with the concept that the Christ could be "spiritually absent". The 1914 doctrin would infer that His "spiritual presence" indicates that it would have been "absent" for 1850 year. Good thing for your final disclaimer!
cheers,

Hi there spring chicken. Whatcha doing up so early?
Re: the study class, we have a group of a dozen or so that meet every two weeks and discuss one of many scholarly papers about various subjects. This last week was on the Johanine promises of the "return" of the Paraclete (comforter, councelor, as well as other translations). In early christianity the Comforter was personified, but by the second century when no "return" appeared it was rationalized away as being the event of Pentacost, much like the 1844 disappointment of Miller and friends and the 1914 fiasco of Russell. Most christians consider the "comforter" to be the "holy spirit" or the third person of the trinity, or both.
For the life of me, I couldn't remember what the witnesses thought about it since they profess a Parousa or "presence" begining in 1874...whoops 1914.
good to see you're fittin in over at pioneeroutrage!

Whodunnit!
by Zep injesus taught that the romans should be loved and not hated.therefore some of his zealot mates decided to get rid of him.some of thezealots were rounded up and condemned to death by crucifixion, some guys high contrived for jesus to be exchanged for barabbas.they gave pilate evidence that jc was part of the zealot movement and was a would be king.jesus was on the cross he was offered poison to drink to end it all, but refuses.by 3pm the pain is unbearable and he takes the wine laced with poison and looses consciousness...but he aint dead.john says that blood came from a wound in his side:clue: a dead body dont bleed.the jews tell pilate that its contrary to law to have the bodies hung out overnight.so pilate agrees to change the excution to being buried alive.all 3 guys are put into a cave.it was thought that jesus was dead, but the others were alive and to prevent their escape their legs are broken (?
).but jesus mates realise he aint dead and they put 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes in his grave clothes...to expell the poison from his body.one of the zealots sitting in the cave with him, pours the juice into his mouth...he recovers.. mary magdalene comes to the cave ans sees that the men had managed to roll back the big rock blocking the cave a little.mary goes and gets help, and jesus later apears before some of his supporters then goes into a monastic life but still guides the others at times.. so......angela lansberry, eat your heart out!

It seems that the pursuit of truth gets lost in the chest pounding and labeling of fallacious logic. Scoring points is more important than finding common ground, being the debate king more important than generating good will.
Oh well, you will know them by there fruitcakes!

Is there another place?
by Xandit ini'm looking for a discussion board, or mailing list or something that's a little different than this.
i've been checking around and haven't been able to find just the right flavor.
this isn't too bad but in some ways it's just a more civil version of h2o.

Hey Waiting,
You know why Jesus didn't come to South Carolina?
They couldn't find three wisemen or a virgin there!!
You know what they call a swiming pool filled with Mississippi chicks?
Bay of Pigs!

Making sense of nonsense
by Zep ininterpreting the scriptures (pg9 of revelation its grand climax at hand).
the mysteries locked up in the book or revelation have for long baffled sincere students of the bible.
in god's due time, those secrets had to be unlocked, but how, when, and to who?

Zep,
Just wondering, is the "divine inspiritation" that the GB and FDS recieve the same "divine inspirition" that the writers of the NT received?
