For a totally different spin on the "Case of the Missing Millinium" try William Sears' "Thief in the Night" carmel

Any recommended readings on the 19th/20th turn of the century religions?
by Crooked Lumpy Vessel ini have read some historical references regarding william miller and his 'end world' predictions back in the mid 1800s and how after the 'end' did not come, the religion broke off into what is now seventh day adventist and church of christ (i think).
there were also some interesting references attributing the establishment of jehovah's witnesses to william miller in a round about way, since charles t. russell was originally an adventist who broke away and started international bible students, carrying some of the same teaching but modified towards his interpretations.. i found this stuff pretty interesting history but was wondering if any one has ever written books that comment more in depth on this evolutional change in religion during the 19th and 20th centuries.
without of course the personal slant towards a belief system.

The Watchtower and Creation
by AlanF init struck me this past year, with respect to jw teachings about the timing of genesis 1, that even in things that really have no impact on what most jws think of as "core doctrine" the watchtower society sticks to its traditions over what the bible says.
this was again brought home in the september, 2006 awake!
17 between me and the sons of israel it is a sign to time indefinite, because in six days jehovah made the heavens and the earth and on the seventh day he rested and proceeded to refresh himself.

Highlander is spot on! Cultural differences are far greater challenges than race. We adopted a mixed race child and raised her along with our four toe heads. She has never wanted to consider another black as a marriage partner as she doesn't want to deal with the cultural differences. Two of our sons, however, married out of their race and culture. Both have wonderful marriages and have dealt with the cultural differences rather creatively, but they will both say that is the greatest challenge. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't hesitate marrying someone of another race or culture. carmel

30 years later I've grown a beard again
by wozadummy inthis is one thing that bugged me about "the lie" ,when they came down hard on men who had grown facial hair in the 8o's ( and womens adornment, clothes etc).
a ms at the time had a beard and grizzled about shaving it off but did after the talk at the assembly, he's an elder now but i wonder whether he chafes a bit at the taking away of ones personal freedom to grow something that god gave us men.. i never grew one when a jw for i was a drone i guess ,but with alot of small things over the years this did irritate me and seemed just a way the gov body controlled our lives by taking away a natural thing in life .it's not like men would have beaded, braided or let it grow to look like a feral and be unclean and untidy.. and we have paul saying in 1 cor 10 that he became all things to others to gain them to christ - well what about beards ?
is there anything more natural?
