It seems obvious that Jesus used it as a title for a person. The same person that would be infused with the "Christ spirit" at the "time of the end" the one that would "unseal the books" who would lead humanity to "all truth". carmel

Can the holy spirit be a person???
by leaving-jws inmy mom and i got into a debate about the trinity doctrine.
she claims that the holy spirit cannot be a person which invalidates the trinity doctrine.
she says in genesis that the holy spirit was depicted as "roving about the earth" as an "active force".

Is it wrong to burn people to death?
by DoomVoyager ini'm an avid reader of steve wells' blog on religion and atheism.
this article discusses the hebrew god (we all know him as joe hoobie) and his propensity for burning people to death.

When the fog lifted - did you see the control tactics everywhere?
by AK - Jeff init took a while for me - but after some time i began to see most all religion as controlling entities, interested not only in forcing doctrine on adherents, but also, and perhaps primarily, seeking to control believers.
i initially saw this as somewhat benign, but have increasingly seen it as dangerous, even a malignant force in human social-evolution.
i see a far-right fundy church and it virtually screams "jwism" to me.

Would you prefer a political party influencing you? or maybe corporate advertizing? or culture habits? Let's face it, we are controlled by lots of different entities. We think because we live in the west we are "free" when in fact many of our choices are constrained. When it comes to religion, I'm glad I had the experiance of the JWs as a youth. It has sensitized me to those control tactics and helped me to avoid fallinging into another trap. My religious affiliation is voluntary and on my own terms.. but then it is what was the intent of the originators of all religions... carmel

growing up witness
by milligal ini grew up a witness and i never felt bad about my lack of material belongings a.k.a.
not having nice clothes in school, it didn't bother me that the other first graders were stuffing their faces with birthday cupcakes and i was in the school library researching fossils; but what did bother me?
my cool cousins.

I dam near went down your path, however, luckily I left the borg and became the worldly one of the family. Got my advanced degree, made my mark in my profession and have five brothers that are still painting flag poles or polishing bank floors at night. We haven't had contact for decades but my nephews have come to me looking for work. Since they have no education, I have to send them away empty handed. carmel

looking inside
by myownsaviorthankyoumuch ini was wondering if there is anyone on this board, that asides from leaving the witness mind reform program,
has also brushed off all religions as a whole?
and began looking inwards for answers instead?

There are many concurant themes in all the worlds religions, regardless of the culture and time of their founding. You will hear they are simply sociological impulses to exert control over others, however, none of the originators or founders promoted such behavior, in fact, a fair analysis shows a progression of social teachings from clan to tribe to city state to nation state. As humanity evolved and progressed older forms no longer served humanity at the same time those forms became to be used as competitive mechanisms to "maintain leadership and yes, control". Each new revelation has been met most antagonistically by the established clergy to the extent that a new revelation usually involves hundreds, even thousands of martyrs. Before you reject all religions or lump them all, I suggest you take some time away from all energy expenditures that try to sort things out and allow detachment to take over your life. In a few years come back and look at things without the residue of JW experiance. You may find you can be much more objective. I wish you well. carmel

Have u found friendships w/ worldy people be hard?
by blkblk13 inso, i'm embarking on slow fade and i think it's time for me to start making friends w/ some non-jdubs so that i'll have a support network once i decide to be completely out and everyone ive ever known abandons me.
ive always gotten along much better w/ wordly people than jdubs so i'll haveno problem securing friends but im concerned about being to keep them.. i want out of the org for various reasons but i must admit i still believe many of the teachings.
i just think the leadership and organization itself is corrupt.

What do you bring to the relationship? Any true friendship is capable of a give and take that is tolerant and open to new paradigms. If you place limits on what you will or will not do (most of us do) then the people you meet and might build a fiendship with will be defined thereby. Ruling out friends that celebrate holidays will pretty much limit you to JWs and their ilk. The whole issue of not celebrating holidays had nothing to do with scripture, more about keeping the r&f focused on being different and not allowing anything to slow down the sales effort. Remember, your mind is much like an animal trap, It only works when it is open! carmel

Anorexia, Bulimia JWs, Enlightenment - Logic - My Theory.
by cognac ini battled with anorexia in my teens.
i watched all these helpful tv shows that gave you 1 million reasons why it's bad, unhealthy, hurtful, etc, etc of why we shouldn't continue to develop these things in which hurt us.
nothing but encourage me to continue what i was doing.

Even in my own religion, there are those that "follow" and those that "lead". Fortunately, leadership is different than other religious or secular institutions in that leadership does not include power over others and that "ownership" is almost demanded, therefore followers tend to gradually move from passivity to active engagement and growth. On a continuium I see the JWs and other cults at the far end of demanding followers to remain sheep like followers and maintain a strict heiararchy, while free thinking and self actualization is on the far opposite end of the spectrum. carmel
