I think some tv execs here have trouble coming up with concepts....and they want instant hits. It's probably easier to sell an idea that has been a success elsewhere.

I don't know if British (or other countries') TV is like this, but it seems that here, once you have a hit, there are suddenly six clones of it that spring up on other networks. We have "reality" tv up the yingyang right now (which I'm not a fan of, so I get pretty annoyed lol). They've always done spin-offs of hit shows, but now its almost overboard. There are four variations of Law & Order and three of CSI.

As far as Americanizing a Brit show..??? Who knows. I watch a lot of the British series that they show on PBS here and have no trouble understanding, even though I'm sure I miss the odd joke now and then.

No compassion during Bible Study

i was remembering today about a bible study an elder's wife took me on once (actually, her elder husband was the congregation overseer).

after the chapter was over for that day (i think the knowledge book), the elder's wife asked when we could arrange the next study.

the frail single mother of three evaded the question, and the elder's wife persisted.

Doesn't that just take the cake? All that selfish dumbass could think of was herself and her stupid "service" schedule.

To be fair, I have known a good number of JW's who are mega compassionate and will bend over backwards to help their studies with things...often to the point that you really have to question whether the person is truly interested or just doesn't want to give up all the support. A happy medium would be nice.

Name Some Trivial Things That Are Big Deals To JWs

so many things come to mind to show how silly jws sound in reality.

for example, being allowed to pass the microphones is a big deal, especially to a young brother.

or being given the "privilege" of cutting the grass or working on a "quick-build" is really something special to a jw.

Because their hour and a half of waiting around for the program to start (for those that got there early in order to get "good" seats) is finally over....and they can now snooze until lunch.

the first time i can vividly recall feeling jealous was when i was 7.. my dad came home from visiting a client with gifts for me and my sisters.

my younger sisters got a beaufiful handmade doll dressed in pink lace called betty and a handmade cotton cot.

i got the 1982 yearbook of jws.

Like Elsewhere, I'm focusing on the beautiful dolly vs the dumbass book. How is that fair? I think for your parents' anniversary you should send your mother some beautiful flowers and your father a bag of manure (useful in the garden, but hardly gift-material). Okay...ahem...yes, I obviously have a little problem myself. Sheesh.

I like the counsel on building up your self esteem. I need to work on this myself. I think if you love yourself more, perhaps you will stress about him less?? I don't know if this is really works, but it feels like it should.

Showey Display

right so i have a younger cousin that works with me (helped him get a job with my company because in s.a you gotto pray you know someone who can help you get a job).

as you know i've left the borg - he's still very much into it.

so yesturday myself, him & a mutual college go off for a lunch at the keg - we order our food and when it comes, he bows his head and prays....silenty - the waitress comes over and thinks he's fallen asleep (narcarpsy sp???

I always thought of a showy display as being something really exaggerated or calculated to gain attention. It doesn't sound like he was being too over the top, but then not being there, it's hard to really tell. Sometimes there are subtle mannerisms or facial expressions that turn a simple action into a big deal.

In my first congregation, the sisters would get together and go out to eat. It was usually a pretty large group. It became....embarrassing. I don't think anybody prayed aloud (can't remember now), but you'd have a whole big table (or two or three smaller tables) full of women bowing their heads for extended periods of time, so everybody in the restaurant knew that this was a religious group of some kind, and then the group would proceed to become so loud and rowdy that I'm surprised we weren't asked to leave. I'm pretty sure, given the decibel level of the conversation, that most of the restaurant had to know we were JW's. I thought it was over the top and definitely a showy display. I always got the impression that certain of the sisters were hoping to "give a witness" that Jehovah's peeps aren't stick-in-the-muds and could have a rollicking good time just like the "worldly" folk. The only witness I think we gave was that JW's could be real idiots.

New Convention Publication All About Basic Doctrines

my mother told me today that she has recieved the new publication (i don't know the name of it yet) and it's all about knowing what basic doctrines jws believe in.

she told me this after she had said that she was being given it by a sister this afternoon.

i said, "if there's any new lite make sure you call me".

It's really rather essential that they rehash doctrine since they change it so much.

I think a lot of JW's are having a hard time remembering what it is they are supposed to believe from one year to the next, let alone try to explain it to others, as they troop from door to door looking for converts. Once you've had a certain doctrine drilled into your head meeting after meeting, year after year, it's very hard to dislodge it, so they pretty much have to put all the brighter light in book every so often and make everybody studies it to get the new thinking firmly in place.

I'd been faded for a couple of years before I could bring myself to stick a couple of quarters in a slot machine. LOL

I know there are other bros and sis's that gamble. One even admitted it to me...but his theory is that if it isn't a problem, then where's the harm. He meets his family (not sure if any are dubs but him) in Atlantic City almost every year. He sets his loss limit before he goes and sticks to it. I guess as long as nobody who knows he's a dub sees him, it'll be okay. Seems like not getting caught is more important that what sins you participate in anyhow.
