funes, the business about it not being a literal generation. We were always taught that the generation that saw 1914 would not die off completely before the end came. I believe the change came about 1995. They altered what was meant by "generation". I never did understand their new definition so I can't really explain it even now, but I know it took them off the hook as those who were born in 1914 (let alone "saw the events" of that year) were getting quite elderly. It looked like a way to squeak out from under a prediction that was rapidly going to be proved false. edit: LOL I replied before reading further than your question. duh!

What was your breaking point?
by soundbox_guy inokay, i'm new as you all probably know, so my question may have been discussed several times in the past.
i'm just curious as to when some of you came to the conclusion that enough was enough and that you didn't want to attend the meetings anymore or not be a jw.
was it in field service, at home, at the hall?

Are Bethelites more likely to leave the JWs than others?
by Gill inhave you any experience of families whose sons have gone off to bethel and then decided to not have any more contact with their family and jws at all very soon after returning?.
i ask this question because i know of two families where this has been the case.. the first family had three sons who one after the other went to the london bether to 'serve' within a couple of years of eachother.. after three years there all three returned home completely different people.
they then left home, left dub land, two married non jws and another lives with his girlfriend.

The PO's son in my first congregation (in Illinois) went away to Bethel after graduating highschool (and doing his pioneering stint for a year). He was there for a couple years, came home, and very shortly moved to Washington to open a business with another ex-Bethel boy. They both left the truth. I'm not sure if he told his folks before or after he moved to Washington that he was dropping out as I'd moved by the time he came home. I always wondered what it was that happened at the Big House that caused him to leave the troof...of course, that was before I started doing some online research. Now I get it.

What greendawn said, minus the criticism part. I never criticized anything out loud. LOL
I was just unhappy and felt like I'd been jerked around. I would try so hard to live up to all the implied counsel from the WTS (ie...don't let your kids do anything outside of JW-approved activities, keep an eagle eye on association, don't plan to send your kids or yourself to college, don't bother to get a good job, don't worry about retirement....blah, blah, drone, blah), only to see, as time went on, other JW's with great jobs, new cars and homes, kids going to college, nice new clothes, taking vacations every year, etc. I felt like a real dunce, like I should have known better than take that slop in the mags seriously.
Then we got the new light about the 1914 generation and I felt like the ground was shifting under my feet. I was tired of meetings, tired of service and tired of trying to live up to some impossible ideal...so I stopped going.

Other Preachers at my door!
by Odrade inthis little incident cracked me up, thought i'd share... .
we live in a decent neighborhood in suburbia, nearly all of the houses are owned, people mow their own lawns, (well everyone except us!
) two or three cars per family, dogs, kids, etc.

When the cat's away, Kwin and Talesin will play! Enjoy your convention JWs!
by kwintestal ini was in the thinking room yesterday morning doing my usual routine, and between grunting and showering my mind was wondering when i came upon what i thought to be a great idea.
this weekend is the weekend for the district convention where all the good little jw's will be attending.
so i thought, if the jw's are at the convention, who's going to be at the kh?

Who do they follow? Jesus - four pages. Faithful and Discreet Slave - seven
by jgnat inwhile searching for any stake references in the organized to do jehovah's will publication (c) 2004, i stumbled on this tidbit.
jesus gets four pages and a bit in chapter 2 under, "recognizing christ's role in god's arrangement".
by comparison, "trusting the "faithful and discreet slave" gets just under seven.

No, it's all the FDS. They seem to only talk about loyalty to Jehovah, which always means the organization. It's very odd.

Can't Americans Understand Plain English?
by Englishman ini watched an interesting film last night.
"a handful of dust" with kristen scott-thomas and alec guinness.. it wasn't bad, so this morning i idly took a peek at the write ups on the net, it being a movie made in the 80's.
to my astonishment, some american viwers were complaining that the movie didn't have any sub-titles!!!

There's only one Brit show (of the ones they show on public tv here in CT) that I had a real hard time following. Wish I could remember which one it was now. It was almost like listening to a foreign language. LOL

Maybe that's what I'm afraid of, Annie...getting a reaction like you got from your family. I did discuss it with my son almost as soon as I realized that the WTS isn't the only true anything. Fortunately he wasn't upset with me. That would have been devastating. I guess I just don't want to hear the "I told you so's" from my parents and my brother and sister. Humble pie is not a dessert I'm fond of. LOL
After reading your experiences, I'm thinking that I should write letters to my sibs and have a discussion with my parents before I suddenly start doing things again. Maybe that way I won't get too much of a negative reaction.

Until recently, I would have still called myself a JW...inactive, but still a member. I'm having a hard time with holiday/birthday stuff myself. My problem right now is telling my non-JW family members (which is everybody. I'm the only one dumb enough to have become a JW) that I'm not one any more. It's embarassing to have to admit that I was duped. I was so sure, you know? So, until I find the courage to tell them I'm done with the Witlesses, I'm still avoiding holiday stuff. Maybe next year.
edited to say that I still can't buy porn. Cards would be much easier to buy for me. LOL
