Even if they do seek medical help, wouldn't they be looked down upon for doing so? I would imagine the gossip mill would be kept busy for awhile if someone was depressed and seeing a doctor and taking meds. carla

eating disorders in JWs
by girl_interrupted inwhat would the jehovah's witnesses have to say about eating disorders?
presumably any kind of mental illness is frowned upon and put down to weakness of the spirit.....i know when i was in it, one sister was severely chastised for having depression....she was told to have more faith in jehovah and presumably when she did, her husband would stop beating her and sexually abusing their kids which was understandably the source of her depression!

Who is your hero and why?
by joelbear inmy hero is isaac asimov because he believed that mankind could eventually live in harmony with nature and itself through the exercise of logic and the action of not taking from the world more than was needed.

At the moment, my best friend. Who I have know since I was 5! She recently went back to school. It is very difficult when you have been away for awhile. She understands she has to make plans for her future, even if the spouse is content with less than 'higher goals' in life. She is a real people person! She can and does go anywhere and will just make friends with anyone. She is usually game for anything! She is like a sister to me, even more so than my 'real' sister. carla

EX JW numbers

I think some of the people who run these different boards know each other. Couldn't they suggest a thread or something of people who wished to be counted as exjw? Maybe it wouldn't be 'scientific' but a rough estimate anyway. And People like me, should not respond, never being jw. (only Apostate at heart doesn't count) That wouldn't include the many who don't find a need for these boards. just a thought, carla

On Freeing Minds: How do you know when you have scored a hit?
by Check_Your_Premises injust curious what you former dubs might think.
for those of us trying to "release the bonds", it would be nice to know when we have made some progress.
this is such a slow and tedious battle.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. It seems to me that if I even stike the slightest note that make him actually have to think outside the box, he changes the subject, says 'we have exhausted the subject', etc.. I don't plan to let him off that easy anymore. There is a quote somewhere, in the KM about letting the unbeliever 'choose' the subject. He has been doing that, time for a change. carla

Fawlty Towers
by Sunspot inmy cheeks are hurting.
i laughed so hard that i missed some of the precious fast moving dialogue!
my pbs station has begun to rerun old "fawlty towers" programming!!

I loved Fawlty Towers! You gentlemen should appreciate the 'light switch' episode!!! I love British humor. However some is a bit racy when the kids are in the room. Or maybe that's just American prudism! I would leave it on, but husband will switch things all the time, driving us crazy! BTW- just talked to someone who just got back from England, he says he never saw so many beautiful women in one place! (his wife didn't seem to appreciate that comment) carla

Men In The Girlie Department.
by Englishman inhow do other guys feel about going into women's clothes shops?.
i spent ages with her ladyship in the per una section of marks & spencers today.
i was quite happy to bumble about behind her and even managed to achieve some nonchalance while i was waiting for her to try stuff on in the changing rooms.

Husband actually likes shopping for clothes for and with me. He used to have really good taste, now it seems like he wants to dress me like the 'church ladies' sometimes! As for men in the underwear dept. I don't mind them in there if I'm just 'shopping' but when I have to walk by them with things to try on, I feel a bit uncomfortable. There is a store in town that has the ladies underwear directly next to the men's shoe dept! I don't know anyone who will actually buy any from there, muchless if you have your teenage daughters with you!!! What kind of weirdo would put the men's shoe dept right there? don't answer, I know! Still not a very bright business move. carla

good argument for 'new light'?
by carla inrunning out of ideas.
anyone have some good points against 'new light'?
as you all know, on one hand the wt says to look back at old issues (however i think that issue itself is 'old') but if you do look back at old issues and point out contradictions, then of course it is 'old', out of date, etc... "that is the beauty of the org, things are revealed blah, blah,.....you know the drill.

Fading.... When your mate won't
by GoingGoingGone ini am in the process of fading.
my husband's a well-respected elder.
i have 2 teenage kids.

carla
Wow! an elders wife trying to fade! Best of luck to you. I'm not jw, never have been, trying to get loved one out myself. Others here can answer better, but, have you read any of Steve Hassans books? You probably have read C of C. What if you posed only questions to him in a non threatening way? Tell him you are trying to figure out x,y and z and don't really understand where the wt stands on an issue? Glad your kids are wise to the org! Sounds like you have a tough road ahead. My best to you and your family. Someone else here can give you better ideas as I think there are some ex elders and exelder wives as well. carla
