When I was a JW and married to one, my wife's grandparents invited us over for a Sunday dinner, a very nice one indeed. Wife's brother, his buddy, and wife's parents were all JW's. The grandparents, however, were Catholic.
We were all at the table while the serving bowls were making their circles -- the chicken, the mashed potatoes, the rolls -- when the buddy, thinking that he was being witty, asked (referring to the part of the chicken that goes over the fence last), "Can someone please pass me the Pope's nose?"
As he grinned, expecting a bunch of laughs and chuckles, I looked around and everyone else was staring silently down at their plates, very somber. I looked at our hosts, and they looked astonished, but never said a word. Fortunately, someone broke the chill with a change in subject.
This happened many years ago but I remember to this day my embarrassment, how sorry I felt for this elderly couple who were doing their best to be good hosts, freely offering their food and hospitality, and only to have one of their guests ambush them with such cruel words. If there had ever been any inclination on their part to show interest in Watchtower teachings, it probably ended then and there.

need data
by mathead ini am currently doing a mathematical analysis on the remnant population.
(the number of partakers left).
i need the number of remnant for the last 15 years, preferably from the "year book" and the average age of the remnant in 2006. my initial work shows the population figures are tampered with.. i think i can pinpoint what the wts is doing here and how they come up with the figures they do.. thanks for any help here

Mathead,
It is plain based on some of your sensible conclusions that the WTBTS has been (again) guilty of more spinning than preaching. I'm looking forward to your final numerical conclusions.

Pratt1,
Your comment "... Might this not send the message that honesty is not always the best policy?".
We don't want to forget that the Society redefined exactly what honesty is:
"Lying generally involves saying something false to a person who is entitled to know the truth and doing so with the intent to deceive or to injure him or another person" ("Insight on the Scriptures", Vol 2 page 244 (1988))
I know this doesn't surprise any of us since we know firsthand the many lies they've put in print. What did kind of surprise me is that they were brave (or stupid) enough to put the above in print, an act that will probably come up and bite them many times in the future when they try to defend the indefensible in courts of law. The courts of First World countries will have zero tolerance for such a definition, "...who is entitled to know the truth".
When it comes to honesty around his kids and grandkids I'm confident he knows what to do.

TSOF,
I, along with many others here, applaud you. I now look back some 28 years ago and I somehow wish I'd had the patience that you are having. One of your issues is family and I can sympathize. Two of my boys (plus grandchildren I have never met or hugged or taken fishing or to the mall) have nothing to do with me to this day.
There is something to be said for overt apostates -- like me and many who post here. I'm certain we do our share of influence to those who lurk. The society dealt with us in the only way their policy blindly knows -- cut us off from potentially influencing their flock. We now have to chip away from the outside and I'm extremely proud every time I see one of the lurkers come out with their exit story.
There is also something to be said for those, like yourself (and others like you who've posted in this thread)who remain inside for whatever reasons we all may not be able to understand and, with good reason. Our lives are correctly our business in this free country.
This has to be extremely frustrating for the WT who are limited in how they can deal with you and the others as you collectively chip away from the inside.

The Watch Tower Gave its Blessing to the US Army Fighting in WWI
by Leolaia inmay 30 for prayer and supplication
in accordance with the resolution of congress of april 2nd, and with the proclamation of the president of the united states of may 11, it is suggested that the lord's people everywhere make may 30th a day of prayer and supplication.
god was graciously pleased to cause the nation to be formed and to grow under the most favorable conditions in the world for the preservation of liberty, civil and religious.

Leolaia,
Was the following scanned correctly? "...Here the love of truth has for three thousand years attracted from all quarters of the world people who love God, love the Bible and love religious liberty ..."
If the subject was the United States, should that not have been "three hundred years"?

Somebody must be pulling my leg on this one.
Okay, I'm from Missouri (er, Arkansas). Where did the WT say Alaska and Hawaii are countries and not states? Am I missing a copy of some annual report? Anyone care to scan it or paste a portion of it?

We've been living in this country home for more than 14 years and have been called on once. My wife and I were both home at the time. She saw the car in the driveway, they didn't knock, and she brought me a rolled up magazine they'd left in the doorknob at which time I saw the car leave. Sorry I didn't get a chance to ask a question or two.
We're by no means wealthy. We're retired and live in a better than average home. I say that, in no way, to be boasting as we feel very priviledged and thankful for what we have.
I say that because, in thinking back to the days when I went out in the work, the popular trait was (30+ years ago) to get a territory out of the box that was in the poorer part of town. Yes, we were reminded to work territories in order of the least worked. But that did not happen. The residents in the poorer sections were far less threatening. They seldom challenged you. Many of them looked up to men at their door with suit coats and ties, women with dresses and hats.
We hated homes like the one we live in. We never dreamed of using the phone or internet (it didn't exist) as a way of counting hours. Hmmm ... sounds so good I may go back -- NOT.

Are you in a cult and want out? Be on the Dr. Phil show!

http://www.drphil.com/plugger/respond/?plugid=9833do you feel you're involved in a cult?

They are looking for ones that are in a cult now. Despite that, I submitted my application. It's not like my two sons are looking to embrace me anytime soon. Here's what I wrote in that free-form field within the online application at Dr. Phil's site.
Yes, I got out of a cult (Jehovah's Witnesses of the Watchtower Society) some 28 years ago but the wounds are as fresh as they were then. Two of my children still have nothing to do with me, following the orders of this controlling group of 6,000,000 which knocks regularly on your door. If not, they too, would be subject to the same shunning policy. My story link (copy link to your browser address field) is below.
