regardless of my last topic on non-information (non spititual information) i have to see this:.

in my experience this is actually true, the awake helps people to get some general knowledge.

especially jw''s in developing countries seem to have a bit more of general information because of reading the awake then others do.. can you agree on this one?.

Awake is crap compared to New Scientist, Scientific American, National Geographic.

Of course you can't compare those. The only thing is scientific american isn't available in a lot of languages, and the people I am talking about have no access to it anyway.

Come on, it is plainly obvious that they themselves don't even believe the end is coming, and if they really DO believe it, they are doing a piss poor job of preaching it, warning people, etc. ;

Sorry do not agree with you on this one. I think they believe most of it themselves.

Get a lot of negative reactions here (maybe understandable).
Not everything has to be that bad. I agree with bluesbrother, that some of the articles when you leave al the bible crap out of it, aren't too bad.
I saw the difference between people reading it regulary, and people reading nothing. There was a not more general knowledge in the first group.

Witnesses even learned some people to read, with the brochure "learn to read and write". This is self interest of course, because how can people preach if they can't read, but it still is some basic education that they received.

A lot of times, this is a very hot topic. All the elders, or at least those who conduct a bookstudy do not want certain members on their study.
Although most of the time it is regional, all living close by, you see for some reason exceptions (the one that elders come up with for some reason)
then when the list is made public, the publishers are mostly not happy and start discussing it. You notice that after a half year or so, changes are made again. Some publishers can''t stand eachother and are not willing to be on the same CBS. This gives the elders headaches again... danny

does anybody remember when the wtbts ask all the congregations to bring back all the old outdated books.

i think it was in the late eighties.

there was an announcement from the podium, return old books so they could be returned to new york.. i was too lazy to go through my books and take them in.

I can't remember this. Or maybe it was nor here at all.

I only know that in the 80's you had to place the old books (60's en 70's books) very cheap, 3 at a time.

To some degree you are right but the content is hardly academic; its mindless fluff half the time and its just so bloody boring! It might appeal to those that havent really got a thirst for knowledge but generally speaking its a load of old bollocks.

Mostly the non biblical articles are more or less correct. They are pretty much the same as the lowest level of popular science articles.
truth, it is not academic, but I'm talking about persons that have also very little education at all.

No, I wouldnt say the fluff articles in awake are any better than any show on Discovery Channel, or even the nightly news

no probably not. (just a note, the quality of discovery channel goes backwards very fast lately)
But most of the people I'm talking about do have that choice. They mostly have no tellie, and surely no satellite dish.

As a kid, I used to like (read hate less) to read the informative articles about animals, other countries and stuff like that. But as soon as it started to drift to the "push the religion" part I would stop, it was always the same anyway. As I got older, I found the articles less and less interesting...(but I was in college then, lol, guess I had other sources of info.)

Same for me. I prefered to read the awakes at the watchtower study then the boring watchtower. Made sure got my awake before the meeting. And yes each article has to end in such a slimy push the religion part.... DB

i would love to have a vehicle that got 30 miles or more to the gallon.

unfortunetly i have to toe things, like a boat, and that requires a truck.

so i purchased a dodge truck, with a deisel engine, and i get a thrill out of 14-16 mpg.

Doesn't it amaze you, that in this day and age, we do not have vehicles that run on something other then gas?

I think there is some choice now.

Biodiesel, Biogas, LPG, hydrogen, more will come as oil prices will rice even more. O yeah, I got a diesel, drive 17 a 18. (that is in standard units, kilometer/liter)

what was/is one of the most annoying things for me at the meetings, was the amount of non-information that the watchtower gives.. it is like rading the entire wt or whatever book and all that they basically say is like: preach more, or whatever.. when you look at the (mirrors of) the quotes site, you see very few interesting quotes of the last 25 years or so.

just because they basically do not say anything at all.

I think they rally must try very hard to avoid all the information. The must examine and re-examine all material, in order to let not a single new idea escape.

Why do Watchtower Publications not have an ISBN number?

open any wt publication (other than tracts) and you will not find (to my knowledge) an isbn number.. you may see (c) all rights reserved and first printing in english.. does anyone know why they would not apply for isbn numbers?.

I think, as with all things,

they do not want to be part of things that are not strictly nessesary. They like to do everything themselves and not use or work togetehr with some one else. And there is indeed no need for them anyway.

In the total over all the years I must have had about 30 biblestudies. Most did stop by themselves.

three were baptised and are still in. But some were a real group effort. Ever notices how everybody wants to take over a successfull biblestudy?

Anyway, I'm really want to get more people out as in, so have some work to do.

witness vs. cathlics

i attended an ex witness group for the first time a couple of weeks ago and a comment made was that jw's are just like any other religion (cathlics, lutherans) in that when someone breaks away from it the same reactions are made from the persons family and ex members such as not talking to them, claiming that the new religion is wrong, dismissal from the congregation because of wrongdoing (fornication) and other cultish stuff that the jw's inflict on us ex's.

is anyone else from another religion that can verify this?

No witnesses are pretty extreme in my view on this.

Lot of churches use to be the same extreme as the JW's, but that is long gone.
Some more fundamental protestants do the same.

For mainstream muslims it is pretty much the same, shunning of family members if you become something else.
