You think that's funny? In a conversation about higher gasoline prices, an elder was heard to exclaim, "Satan sure is trying everything he can to stop the preaching work!" I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I think if I were a multi-billion-year-old hyper-intelligent spirit creature hell-bent on stopping a largely ineffective "preaching" effort by a disinterested listless group that makes up less than 1/10 of 1% of the world's population, I might, just might, come up with something a wee bit more intimidating than "higher gas prices in one of the earth's nations".

50% Printing capacity Spin?
by metatron inapparently, some remark was made at a district convention that the society's new facility is only running at 50% capacity.. it was hinted that this is because some great increase is being prepared for.
now, i know , from talking to a bethel elder of long.
standing that the society's massive downsizing of printing in brooklyn involved sending off equipment to other countries , as well.

Whats happens to all the $$$$ when the WTS closes down
by jwfacts ini used to think that if the end didnt come within the generation that the wts would have to shut down.
as it is a multibillion dollar non profit organisation i imagined that the publishers would then each get an equal distribution of the wealth, a great incentive to stay.
but then the definition of a generation changed and makes the wts viable for a bit longer than i cared to hang around for.. how long do you think the wts can continue before people en masse realise it is a pointless cult and it drifts into oblivion.

The org. has reached the point where its first, perhaps its only, priority is self-perpetuation. Keep the org. going, no matter what effect it has on individuals.
That being said, assuming it did "close down", where would the money go?
Where does the money always go? To the lawyers!

"Relief Effort" here in Texas
by theundecided2004 inhey guys,.
just thought i'd let those interested know what the north texas part of the org is/isn't doing to help in the relief effort from a first hand account.. first of all, we all know that the society isn't helping anyone that isn't a dub, maybe unless they are a serious bible study or something.
that being said, by monday we had several refugees camping out at different brother and sisters' homes, most of whom they were already friends with or were referred to by mutual friends.

This is just the kind of fragmentation that the WTS is scared to death of. If a KH can start its own newsletter, what will prevent it from producing its own literature with its own unique flavor of "truth".
Brooklyn lawyers are scrambling as we speak, I'm sure.
I give it another 48 hours tops, before the pressure from "mama" starts up.
Giving attention to this website, and its inevitable demise, is just the kind of publicity that WT can't afford...

Very interesting, that link to jw-aid.com. Initiative shown by local brothers, stepping into the embarrassing void left by NY's inactivity.
A pity that "mother" will make every effort to shut and down, and likely remove the "privileges" of those who set it up. It is quite embarrassing to them, in more ways than one.

it was the hand of Jesus, the missing digits to be precise, that flicked the hurricane east just a little to keep the city from suffering a direct blow.
So why didn't he flick a little harder, and push the whole thing back to sea?
Or use both hands?
And we wonder why the US is a laughingstock to the rest off the world...

Even if alot of it is in real estate and not cash, don't you think it would be a nice Christian gesture to perhaps "sell [some of their] their belongings" to help out their fellow man when disaster strikes??
Yes, I do.
But, they have a cash crunch. If they sell some of their property each & every time a disaster strikes, it wouldn't be long before there was no property left to sell. They are not getting the cash flow in to re-acquire anything they might sell. They are in the business of priniting books & magazines, not in the business of disaster relief like Red Cross.
don't you think they should be doing far more charitable works than what those in "Christendom" are doing??
Again, yes in principle, but...
"Christendom" has trillions of dollars and billions of adherents...compared to the world's major religions, the JWs are quite small.
Does the Catholic Church or the Methodist Church in New York go down to New Orleans and only "help their own"??
No, a very good point you have made.
What would you think if a group of whites from the U.S. Army went in to a city and decided to help out the white folks first???
Apples & oranges. The army gets hundreds of billions of dollars in funding annually from the US gov't, and has thousands of persons trained to help in disaster situations. The JWs get millions of dollars, which they invest in their core business which has nothing to do with disaster relief. Plus "the army helping only whites" isn't really equivalent to "JWs helping JWs first".
I think the example of a man, or a family, going in and helping out their own family is more apt. With very limited resources, they couldn't make any significant dent in helping the 10's or 100's of thousands in need. If you don't have enough to spend on helping everyone, you need to decide who to help first. JWs choose to help their "brothers in the faith" first.
All that being said....I do agree with the points made above. Jesus showed time & again the importance of charitable works, a point the JWs completely miss over & over & over again. JWs failing to do this, and not setting up any kind of charity anywhere, is just another line of evidence showing how woefully short they fall of the Christian ideal.
But I really don't fault them for looking after their own people first. In my experience, once there are JWs on the scene working, their humanity comes out and they often do go and help out where they can, regardless of the beliefs of those they help. But that is due to the humanity of the individual JWs, certainly it is not an organizational response.
