From www.jw-aid.com:
"Scam Alert: There are already blogs and "news releases" directing people to donate at websites supposedly managed by Jehovah's Witnesses. Most of them are hostile to our cause and/or simply channel the money to other relief organizations. To contribute to the relief effort spearheaded by Jehovah's Witnesses, please follow the instructions shown above, which are based on official directions from the United States branch office of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, a legal organization in use by Jehovah's Witnesses."
What a Scam! People might actually channel donations to OTHER relief organizations! NON-JW's might benefit! That can't be allowed to happen!
Also:
"Otherwise, send cash donations to the branch office, where a relief fund is set aside for this purpose. The address is Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, c/o Office of the Secretary and Treasurer, 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, NY 11201-2483. Make checks payable to "Watch Tower." (See km 7/00 p. 3 and km 11/04 p. 3)"
A relief fund? I seem to remember reading in another thread from a phone call to the WTBTS that there is NOT a specific fund to donate to. Just send donations to the worldwide work.

So true! I've always noticed that my grandmother never shows any emotion about the suffering of people going through things like this. She jumps right to the comments about how they shouldn't have built there, or about how the WTBTS is helping JW's better than anyone else is helping. She couldn't care less about anyone that's not a JW. -

My neighbor and I are holding a car wash for Red Cross donations this weekend. My yard for parking and theirs for washing cars. So far today we've received a little over $1,000 in donations.

People are animals
by joelbear in.
new orleans is becoming an interesting sociological study.
when the artificial comforts of the human world are gone, all you are left with is your animal instincts.. people are reacting based on their life experience combined with their genetic make up.. some docile, some in aggressive attack mode

As has been noted already, there are most likely a small number of people acting like animals in NO right now. The vast majority are probably stressed, scared, pissed and worried, but not intentionally causing other people pain.
The media just jumps on the bad and splashes it all over the front page, giving a warped impression of reality. -

I ran into three of my middle school teachers last Wednesday at an open house at my daughter's school. She's going to the same school I went to.
One was my gym coach who, to this day, I have memories of how patient he was with me, a kid who was not at all athletic. He was always supportive and helpful and I eventually ended up on the track team and did pretty well.
When I went up to him he recognized me from 27 years ago. I learn that it was his first year teaching and this is his last year. He is a very important figure in my life and he was probably one of the most influential people in building my self esteem.
I was so pleased to talk to him last week and he seemed genuinely pleased to talk to me and to find out what I'm doing now. I'll never forget him as a teacher and that even now he's the same excellent person. -

Driving Down Old Roads
by wanderlustguy instrange how the hardest thing to do is nothing, and you could swear the devil is trying to get you.
i got a phone call the other night i knew would come, on old road beckoning.
it was a great one, too, beautiful in so many ways, but at the same time riddled with potholes and dangers to me.

You're traveling a road many of us have. It's rough, as you say, but I believe it leads somewhere worthwhile.
Just last night I lay in bed daydreaming about my marriage. About all the good times, all the fun, the companionship. Today I wake up and the reality of why I'm better off hits me. It's so easy to think of only the good in our memory. Only what we miss. But there was a reason why we wanted out in the first place, and it was real. I find that over time I dwell on the good memories and forget the bad. That can make it harder to believe I'm on the right road, but I am. I know why I am, but it's so easy to forget.
It's easy to want just the good back, but it's not real. With the good comes everything else. We push those memories away, but we know. We can't forget, for our own protection.
There's no need to hate, to punish, just learn and grow. Cherish the good memories in life, but be able to recall the bad when necesary to guide us forward.
The longer I travel down this road, the more I enjoy it. Pursuing new goals, building new dreams, finding new joys. Sometimes I look back, but less often than before. The road is nowhere near as rough as it was at the start.
I hope your road leads you where you need to go. Before you make any turns, take time and think deeply. -

---"*Limit introductory comments to less than a minute,
did this ever happen in your hall?"---
We had a PO that would ALWAYS tell me that he needed extra time for his service meeting part and I should make mine as short as possible. Happened everytime we both had parts on the same meeting. He would just drone on and on about his time at Bethel and preaching in Bulgaria.
I finally just started using all my time and he usually got mad. Too bad.
He'd also require that whoever had announcements call him before the meeting to ask if he had anything to add. Sometimes I couldn't catch him home and he had no voice mail, then when he'd get to the meeting he'd very sarcastically let me know that I didn't call him.
I don't miss that one bit.
