I use VOIP as my only home phone now. The sound quality and full duplex is excellent at this point. I regularly talk to family in Alaska and there is just the very slightest bit of a delay. Much better quality than using a cell phone.

Giving up drinking...........
by vitty in..............the tread about giving up smoking, made me think.
they usually can give you a time scale of how long it takes to give up smoking, i know its different for everyone, but usually 6 weeks and youve cracked it, 3 months and you hardly think about it.. what about drinking, is there a yard stick of how long it takes you to break the addiction.
ive decided to stop for a month, they reckon its a good test.. ive stopped drinking during the week( about 3 months ) and drink only fridays and saturdays, but i must admit by thursday im really chomping on the bit for a glass of wine.. so this week will be my first dry weekend for about 10 years, im excited but also worried that i cant do it.. the problem is i associate drinking wine, with relaxing and welcoming the weekend.. .

I used to drink a beer every few days, but near the end of my marriage I really picked it up. It helped me to not think about my life and go to sleep at night.
My wife got really upset so I quit entirely. I had no alcohol for about a year. I went to Germany every year and that was kinda disappointing to have no beer in Germany, but I did it. She asked (told) me to go to AA so I did. I know it works for some people and is very beneficial, but I found it extremely depressing to be there and listen to people who I felt I had absolutely nothing in common with. One guy would always express how much he hated successful business people and wanted the worst for them. Well, I was one and he always really pissed me off. I felt like he was describing me and his reasoning made no sense. AA was a bad place for me to be, but probably just the location where I went but who knows.
Anyway, I drink about one drink each night now before bed. I have no intention to change that and next time I'm in Germany I plan to enjoy myself. -

JW and Hurricane Katrina

From www.jw-aid.com:
"Scam Alert: There are already blogs and "news releases" directing people to donate at websites supposedly managed by Jehovah's Witnesses. Most of them are hostile to our cause and/or simply channel the money to other relief organizations. To contribute to the relief effort spearheaded by Jehovah's Witnesses, please follow the instructions shown above, which are based on official directions from the United States branch office of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, a legal organization in use by Jehovah's Witnesses."
What a Scam! People might actually channel donations to OTHER relief organizations! NON-JW's might benefit! That can't be allowed to happen!
Also:
"Otherwise, send cash donations to the branch office, where a relief fund is set aside for this purpose. The address is Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, c/o Office of the Secretary and Treasurer, 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, NY 11201-2483. Make checks payable to "Watch Tower." (See km 7/00 p. 3 and km 11/04 p. 3)"
A relief fund? I seem to remember reading in another thread from a phone call to the WTBTS that there is NOT a specific fund to donate to. Just send donations to the worldwide work. -

---"not suprising jeannine, JDubs are indifferent to the plite of fellow humans becuase they are brainwashed to be 'no part of this world'."---
So true! I've always noticed that my grandmother never shows any emotion about the suffering of people going through things like this. She jumps right to the comments about how they shouldn't have built there, or about how the WTBTS is helping JW's better than anyone else is helping. She couldn't care less about anyone that's not a JW. -

People are animals
by joelbear in.
new orleans is becoming an interesting sociological study.
when the artificial comforts of the human world are gone, all you are left with is your animal instincts.. people are reacting based on their life experience combined with their genetic make up.. some docile, some in aggressive attack mode

As has been noted already, there are most likely a small number of people acting like animals in NO right now. The vast majority are probably stressed, scared, pissed and worried, but not intentionally causing other people pain.
The media just jumps on the bad and splashes it all over the front page, giving a warped impression of reality. -

I ran into three of my middle school teachers last Wednesday at an open house at my daughter's school. She's going to the same school I went to.
One was my gym coach who, to this day, I have memories of how patient he was with me, a kid who was not at all athletic. He was always supportive and helpful and I eventually ended up on the track team and did pretty well.
When I went up to him he recognized me from 27 years ago. I learn that it was his first year teaching and this is his last year. He is a very important figure in my life and he was probably one of the most influential people in building my self esteem.
I was so pleased to talk to him last week and he seemed genuinely pleased to talk to me and to find out what I'm doing now. I'll never forget him as a teacher and that even now he's the same excellent person. -
