I'm sure thats what the true meaning of the talents are about. I thought it would be fun to link the talents to something else that correlates with money or tangibles such as TIME, which really is the ONLY asset most JW's have. Even then they piss this asset away.

I thought about this over the weekend, and it seems to me that Jehovahs Witnesses, and even other Christian/non-Christian groups, have looked Gods gift horse in the mouth. For the purposes of this small "thesis", I will focus on Jehovahs-Witnesses.
What is Gods "gift horse"? Gods "gift horse" is TIME. Raw, un-refundable TIME. Jehovahs Witnesses like to apply Matthew 25:14-30 towards themselves as they are this "good and faithful slave" who are deserving of the 5 talents, or all things from God.
Matt 25:14-30 "For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. In like manner he also who got the two gained another two. But he who received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. "Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them. He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.’ "His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ "He also who got the two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.’ "His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ "He also who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’ "But his lord answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn’t sow, and gather where I didn’t scatter. You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. Take away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who has not, even that which he has will be taken away. Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’"
Yet, Jehovahs-Witnesses, in general do not look beyond, to the REAL meaning of this scripture. Lets look at this from another perspective. The talents here are TIME. God gives these talents freely to everyone. Its dependant upon us as to how we will use them. Do we use these talents in a benefical way, or are we wasting them?
Does God expect us to use these talents for HIS benefit or OURS? If we say HIS, then have we looked this "gift horse" in the mouth? If we say OURS, are we selfish? Is it REALLY selfish to use them to our benefit since we are creatures of time to begin with? I don't believe so.
God is omnipotent and omniscent, so he should be able to understand our needs, right? The question becomes, how do we USE these talents? JW's would have you believe that God wants you to live the life of a pouper, contribute every waking minute to His service. But is that really so? Did not Jesus, the son of God say that God wanted Mercy and not Sacrifice? Did not Jesus, the son of God say that we should do unto others as we would have them do onto us? Did not Jesus, the son of God say that the whole law hinged on TWO things - love your neighbor and love God?
Time is a non refundable Gift given to us by god. It does not matter if this life is all there is, or if an after life exists, TIME is NONREFUNDABLE!! If we use our TIME talents properly, and apply the golden rule, we can have a life full of many pleasures, with many possibilities. Can you imagine being judged by God and he wants to know how you used the talents he gave you? You might say, "I used the talents you gave me for YOU". Unfortunately, you would be like the wicked slave who selfishly buried his talent. God will then tell you that you should have invested it into the "human bank", which is giving yourself to others in a truely BENEFICIAL way (services for the poor, helping others achive their goals, etc. - TANGIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS). It would be better to tell God that you used his talent of TIME and made it grow for YOU. YOU took advantage of TIME and made yourself a better person, achieved your goals in life, and reached your apex before dieing. This is what God wants to hear. He doesn't want to hear you say you pissed the only NON REFUNDABLE asset you had down the drain. He doesn't want you to give back to HIM what he already has an infinite amount of. He wants you to take the gift horse he gave you and turn it into a racing horse, farm horse, or even a buggy horse. HE DOES NOT want you to take the gift, inspect it over, and give it back because you feel He does not want you to have it.
So, live life, be happy, make your own doors, and stop wasting your ONLY commodity on truely nonsensical actions such as preaching, ad nausum, etc.

Why play their game? I wouldn't send shit. I wouldn't answer the door either. Make them waste their time and gas at your expense. Play the game. Remember to make your own destiny and do not allow others to shape it. You could always be an asshole and feed your sister disinformation, which you know would most certainly get passed onto the elders.

My thoughts are to do it SLOWLY, just as a frog will boil to death if you SLOWLY apply heat, rather than all at once. I would not tell him I have doubts, rather you are trying to understand the conflicting stories of the JW past. Tell him you found some old WTS/Russell books at a book store and was reading through them. Ask him about the prophecies or how Russell came up with 1914, and that you found it was initially based on pyramidology, and was later changed by Rutherford. At some point a reasonable person has to conclude that the excuse of the light getting brighter is bullshit, and that the light NEVER existed. I would always describe yourslef as the ancient Boreans, and your quest to make sure of all things, and that knowledge to make a more informed decision and basing your faith on this knowledge is NOT the same as doubting.

Think about this: Why is it that civilization in Central-America and even in Egypt once day jump out of the jungle/desert and boom - pyramids that rival anything built? How did the ancients in Central-America with no concept of the wheel lift 40ton+ rocks without pulleys/cranes, or transport them? Why is it that cocaine residue has been found on Egyptian mummies, yet cocaine only grows in Central-America? No records exist with trade between the two cultures, yet these buildings go up almost simultaniously. Why is it when you look at these cultures, especially the Central American cultures and technology that it is almost like they skipped steps A, and B, and boom, arrived at C. It would be like you, the engineer, giving your child the answer, but never how to arrive at the solution. Think about that for a second. How could these primitive cultures cut stones so perfect that the gap between each stone is 1/200th of an inch! Corners are not broken which means that the stones were not dragged. The angles on the corners are perfect 90 degrees, rivals a laser transit. While all the time they only had simple copper tools? Yea right...

Blonde, I think you meant this:
*** w00 1/15 p. 13 par. 17 "Keep on the Watch" ***
Fifth, weseeaglobalpreachingworkbeingaccomplished, whichJesussaidwouldtakeplacejustbeforetheendofthissystem. Jesus stated: "This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come." (Matthew 24:14) Today, that prophecy is in the course of fulfillment on an unprecedented scale. True, untouched territories still exist, and it may be that in Jehovah’s due time, a large door leading to greater activity will open. (1 Corinthians 16:9) Nevertheless, the Bible does not state that Jehovah will wait until every individual on earth has received a personal witness. Rather, the good news must be preached toJehovah’sGoverning Body's satisfaction. Then the end will come (again, maybe, within this generation, ya, thats it... ).—Compare Matthew 10:23. -

Will God have mercy?
by sinis ini was thinking of this the other day.
though i am not christian or any other religion, and at times even question the validity of god (which becomes more appearent with all the shit that goes on in this world every day), i stopped and thought, what if?
what if after this life those who did not believe in a higher power, ie god, go to meet this maker.

I was watching Futurama the other night and Bender becomes God. Anyone else see that episode? Funny as hell! Bender floating through the universe with a small race of beings living on his belly area, and the other living on his back. War breaks out between the two, over religion and they nuke each other. The whole time Bender, is like WTF? Lets talk this over. Then he drifts through space and happens upon a galaxy that contacts him via binary code. Anyway, Bender asks the galaxy cluster if its God. And the galaxy says, could be. Make a long story short, "god" is asked why he doesn't do anything, god says are you sure I'm not? God then says, "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."
Malachi: "The infidels on your back no longer believe in you. They say their prayers go unheeded."
Bender: "Of course they're unheeded, how am I supposed to hear prayers coming out of my ass?"Malachi Jr: "Look Daddy, I'm hugging God! Mmmm, hmmm...maybe if I hug him real hard, he'll save us from..." *boom*
Bender: "Noooo!"Bender: "Hello? Is anyone still alive? How about in the porno theater? Don't be embarrassed!"
Bender: "Hey, that galaxy's signaling in binary. I gotta signal back! But I only know enough binary to ask where the bathroom is. You speak english?"
God: "I do now."Bender: "So, do you know what I'm gonna do before I do it?"
God: "Yes."
Bender: "What if I do something different?"
God: "Then I don't know that."Bender: "I was God once."
God: "Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died."God: "Bender, being God isn't easy. If you do too much, people get dependent on you. And if you do nothing, they lose hope. You have to use a light touch, like a safecracker or a pickpocket."
Bender: "Or a guy who burns down a bar for the insurance money!"
God: "Yes, if you make it look like an electrical thing. When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all." -

Simple life, which is better?

As I become older, "less becomes more". I see people all around me going into debt up to their eyeballs, with little chance of probably ever paying it off. Not only that, but with more "stuff" comes more time to maintain more "stuff". Which means you have to work more to pay for this "stuff". Very evil cycle that can only run you into the ground. Time is a commodity that can never be purchased, and can never be refunded. In my mind, simple is more.

What if after this life those who did not believe in a higher power, ie God, go to meet this maker. Lets say when you meet your maker, he tells you that the Bible and other organized religions were not from him, but he still liked the idea that it helped man believe in him. Do you think God would hold it against you that you did not believe in Him? I would think, if he is all mercifull, that he would have mercy considering the state of the world and no real guidance by him. Thoughts?

Why do people believe in religion?
by sinis ini still have a hard time wrapping my brain around this.
for example why do so many believe in the bible when ample proof exists that negats its validaty?
why not believe in zeus or jupitor, etc.

I have always said that, people believe in religion because, they can't handle the fact, that what we have here is all the is. The only way to be remembered, is to accomplish something, to better humanity, during your brief time on this earth. It is much easier to believe in God, than to know that when you are gone, in 20 years no one will ever know you were ever here.
Philip
That actually makes a lot of sense. The sad thing is, no matter if YOU are remembered or not, you should still pursue your goals and reach out for what life offers you. Instead many religio's sit back and say I'll get to it in the next life, all the while life passes them by. I know the JW's are big into this. Why do anything now when I can do it in paradise? As a society, religion has really destroyed the full potential of its citizens by giving them a "tomorrow attitude". Think about the advances in stem cell research, yet religion has been used an opposing force. I wish people would wake from the haze...
