  End of the World Near?

  i am wondering how many people out there still believe that in the next 100 years or so that this world/earth is going to be destroyed?.

  my husband is a christian, and sometimes he is obsessed with world events in the middle east and he thinks one day soon all the christians are going to be raptured away to heaven while the antichrist rules here on earth.

  i am extremely uncomfortable when he talks about it because it reminds me of the jws.. any thoughts out there?

  Are you referring to the latest news from Israel on the Ark of the Covenant by chance? I realize a lot of christians and jews are up in arms these days over its direct location and the prospect of removing it from the cave in which it is located. Many jews believe that this event signals the coming of the messiah. Yes, it is big news on the christian front. I have heard a lot about it as well, if this is the same sort of thing your husband speaks of. Regardless of its religious 'dooms-day is approaching' connotations...actually sort of interesting stuff.

  But no, at 4.7 billion years old (or so)... I don't think the earth's end is anywhere near in sight. I don't suppose your husband (or any of the witnesses) will hear that, however.

  Is vivisection ethical?

  do you believe that vivisection (animal experimentation) that usually involves causing disease or injury to animals for the sake of scientific research is an unethical practice that should be banned?

  In 2002 I wrote a persuasive speech for a communications class regarding vivisection. Before going into it I was quite certain I felt strongly against it but decided I would need to do plenty of research before committing to the subject, as most people are either totally for it in the name of science, or against it in the name of humane treatment towards animals.

  After reading Peter Singer's Animal liberation, I could not have felt more passionately against the act of vivisection. I concluded it is barbaric, inhumane, and the legality of it is simply incomprehensible. Many people that rally around scientific testing on animals do not realize what is going on behind closed laboratory doors.

  My speech included various accounts of things like live kittens being flushed down the drain, animals undergoing extremely painful experiments without any the comfort of drugs, and various experiments that were totally inconclusive to science. In other words, there was no legitimate reason for the experiment to take place that could justify the painful exploitation and death upon the innocent subject matter.

  I think this quote that I incorporated into the speech by Gandhi sums it up well...

  "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

  Just got home from the assembly!!!!! How fortunate I am!!!!

  i justlove the old houses in that town very nice.

  My brainwashed dad

  even though my dad is a jw i always thought that he was a reasoning man.

  when i married my airforce husband he didnt really get upset, when i told him i needed to study the witnesses for myself to see if i truely believed the teachings he encouraged me to do so.

  ive been calling him now and then to discuss the things i have been researching ( alittle bit at a time though because i didnt want to freak him out) a couple of months ago i told him about the un thing, i offered to send him the link and he requested that i send him a hard copy of the ngo letter.

  Hi lilbit,

  We assume our parents, sharing the same dna and all, will understand things if only we could just present the facts to them clearly enough. Unfortunately, I can testify from my own estranged father/daughter relationship, it is amazing how far the apple can fall from the tree in terms of thinking processes, deep psychological attachments, and their seemingly unbreakable codependency to the wts.

  It is admirable that you have the courage to try and help him rationalize things. He should feel proud to have an independent and rational daughter.

  So true!!...men that have sister(s) somehow seem more conditioned to the emotional differences between men & women. They are more sensitive or understanding or something. I could never quite put my finger on it, but always felt that way too. (Happy belated b-day lil frog:)

  make me the elf princess Arwen from the LOTR. (also keeping the same theme as legolas...)

  There is sort of a real life comparison, as she gave up eternal life for falling in love with a man and I gave up the notion of eternal life (or their dream thereof) for falling in love with living in the world and all that it has to offer.

  Also, Liv Tyler is so pretty... so if I get to look like her that probably cant hurt me in any afterlife.

  when i tell them my daughter got the letter in the mail yesterday that she's been accepted to that spiritually-killing, immorality-laden place called the university of british columbia for fall studies!

  Well, I knew a nice enough jw boy named sheldon once. He was this big, buff black guy with lots of charm and charisma...very popular with the ladies. But I think he went by Shel.

  i started taking this as a appetite suppresant friday.

  i've searched high and low on the web and have yet to find anything negative about it....so far it works and i don't feel jittery or nervous.... here's a full story on it.

  Hi jojo,

  I watched that segment on 60 minutes a few Sundays ago. I have not heard anything else about it being harmful, or otherwise. Seems like it really may work, but I try to be careful with anything that is not regulated by the FDA. Ya never know what they could find out later w. more controlled studies.

  If it turns out to be safe and effective, I could see it coming in handy...something to stop my stomach from growling embarrassingly loud in the middle of a quiet class. grrrrrrr That would be nice!
