did you have narrow minded turds as elders/overseers in your congregation?
yup so did i...they're everwhere.. "there was this one time..at band camp"....it was in a hired hall actually...where we used to organise congregation functions like farewells etc.
this usually consisted of food...non alcoholic beverages...and some entertainment...usually square dancing and some skits...and a presentation or speech.. at one function a particular elder was offended that the 'gay gordon' was one of the dances for the evening...so he promptly left...yup...at the next function it was renamed the 'happy gordon'...as his conscience wouldn't allow him to attend otherwise.
I was told by a friend at a beach bbq that this would have been a farewell party for me.... but as I was going away to a university, nevermind!....Don't want the friends to think its ok to attend college....
Oh he's been appointed an MS? How nice! Maybe he didn't learn anything useful in college after all!

What I got out of it: I accepted that it was a choice of mine to leave JWs. (I had felt like I had no choice.) Interestingly, this was because the Forum itself was a sort of mirror to the JW social experience.
Did you feel manipulated?

i started a thread on self esteem.
since i consider this an important subject i am going to try this again.
this time i will ask some questions and ask for your comments.. 1. as children we were told many things about ourselves.
1. As children we were told many things about ourselves. Some good, some bad. Which of these do you believe, the good ones or the bad ones, and why?
I apparently did believe some of the bad things, like 'you talk too much'. Realizing that these judgements of others are highly subjective, I now believe primarily the good things, and even those I take with a grain of salt.
I usually take praise as a stimulus to evaluate how in the future I could display more of the quality in question.
2. Today, what is the source of your self esteem?
what I tell myself about myself.
Yeppers!
Success and failure is a good way to evaluate how to accomplish your goals and what should be your priorities (things you are good at), but it's not a good place to put your self-esteem.
No, no, no.
But I confess I do make that mistake often also. For example, I know I am a kind and caring person, which is based on success dealing with others compassionately. But I suppose that's better than putting all my self-esteem in my intellect or ego.

i am new to this forum but i have for the past several days been reading posts from people that for the first time in 26 years have pasts, memories and feelings like my self.
suffice to say that i too was born and raised in "the truth".
i have at one time or another been, a ms, a vacation pioneer, a regular pioneer, a disfellowship individual, a re-instated individual, publicly reproved, privately reproved and finally for the past 7 years a man who they don't even come on my property cause he's a nut who might shoot you and will at the very least call the police and have you arrested for trespassing individual.. unlike so many others though i find no personal desire to rant or rage against the machine.
Hello and welcome,

does looks really matter in love?
would you go out with someone who was not physically attractive if he/she had a big heart on the inside, a great personality, lot's of things in common with, etc...i guess i'm asking what's more important to you the person on the exterior or who he/she really is underneath?.

I am not sure if this was on Nightline, but I just briefly saw a story about Pharmaceuticals. Did anyone else see this?
They are using every manipulative tool in the books to get doctors to 'prescribe, prescribe, prescribe!' Much of it is, very literally, bribery.
It's disgusting.

It is not for nothing they say the food most likely to cause frigidity in females is wedding cake
lol lol lol JanH!
But like Tatiana says, men are the same way. Maybe they wait till later in the marraige, but they do cool off. That has to suck for their wives.
Women and men are both notorious also for showing a sense of humour in public, but having none at home once married.
