child abuse cover up
by looloo ini wonder if anyon on hre can give me some advice , my daughter was abused by an ex jw , it came out in court that he had abused other childrn when he was serving as a ministerial servant years earlier , the elders knw about those victims and never reported him to the police , the judge called it a coverup , there were no press in the room so it never made it in the papers which i was very angry about .
had they reported him years ago he would never have been able to abuse my daughter , and i want an apoligy , i have tried to discuss it with the elders but they all mak out they knew nothing , which makes m wonder who it was that reported the abuse to london hq bethel as that was said in court .
do you think if i wrot to them we would get an apology, his wife who used to be a close friend is supporting him, and his jw family , i feel devastated by this, the cps did not persue the 8 charges for my daughter due to lack of evidence , even though he took my daughter and another victim to the same place, which his wife must just think is a huge coincidence, they critise the catholics for keeping hush hush about abuse but do the same themselves , i wish i could talk to another mum of a child who was abused by a jw , i cant talk to the other mums involved in our case as i think they have been told not to talk to me , i am not a jw but am married to a disfellowshipped man .

Might it be worth checking out the Silent Lambs website? You might find some help and support there.

ex elder will serve prison time for abuse
by sosad inwell, the pig will serve jail time.
check out the star phoenix - the story was page a3.
it's too bad but it is going to get overlooked due to our provincial election today.. the article is pretty graphic - it shows the power these guys hold over families and how naive parents that are jws really are - not to mention the wives of elders.

Dear god, this is a terrible story. How can anyone think the sex was conseneual when she was in a mental hospital, often sedated, self harmed and then later on worked for the abusers company.
That poor girl. The mother must feel absolutely awful. I cant imagine how bad you must feel to realise that not only have you failed to protect your children, but that you actively put them in harms way.
The guy should be hung.

Donations to Go Down?
by metatron init's utterly amazing that the society has bamboozled publishers into thinking that all of its cutbacks.
are somehow not related to a lack of donations.. perhaps this will be tested in the next few years as gasoline, food, and other essentials go way.
up in price while wages stay stagnant.

Good point Sirona. I am seriously fed up of people bleating on about how expensive fuel is in the US.
At 4 litres to a US gallon, thats $8.40 per gallon in the UK. So please dont tell me your fuel is expensive.

Good accurate advice from Sirona.
We did have people in my old congregation who were married to 'unbelievers' but they were without exception people who had chosen to come into the religion after they had got married, and their partner hadnt.
They were regarded as (1) either people to keep at arms length because association with them meant association with a non JW or (2) someone to be sickly nice to because it seemed like there was a good chance we could 'nice' the partner into the religion.
Its not a nice position for either partner to be in and the pressure must be tremendous and relentless. The non JW partner has to be really strong, and in some respects brutal to stop the JW partner from continually preaching to them. Then there is the issue of birthdays, christmas etc Easier to negotiate if there are no kids, but still you will end up going without those celebrations you may have loved.
In your position, if the elders detect you have no interest in converting your b/f will be put under immediate pressure to stop sleeping with you, and then after that to break off with you. If he chooses to marry you anyway without you becoming a JW he will be barred from priviledges.
I was in a position, when I was a JW, where I tried to marry a JW who had been brought up in the religion but just hadnt got round to getting baptised. A meeting with the elders resulted and I was told I was in effect marrying an unbeliever. An announcement was made that no-body should attend our wedding, and we had to call the whole thing off (becuase we only knew JW's - both having been brought up as such). We then had to wait until the elders saw fit to let him get baptised - which they refused the first time because they said he only wanted to so we could get married. So we had to pretend like we werent waiting to get married and just concentrate on convincing the elders he wanted to get baptised.
His life would be much more difficult that this is he went back.

Have You Divorced And/Or Remarried- What Did You Learn From It ?
by flipper inin seeing a lot of posters threads , i feel i see many people who have been divorced at one time , and either have remarried or have stayed single .
i totally understand those who choose to stay single, as i was single for 6 years before i got married again !
as experts say, next to death it's one of the hardest experiences you'll go through !

We met in High School but I wouldn't go out with him because he wasn't a JW. We reconnected (Classmates.com), have been happily married for 7 years.
WOW - now that is romantic!
I married too young to a dub, and I think I must have made him as miserable as he made me.
I learned:
That divorce is a fantastic option - everyone should try it (unless they are in love, of course)
That sex is WAY more fun when you are not married
That theres no 'look what a sensible parent I am' competition when you are on your own, you just do whatever grabs you
That you can get a divorce for £50 in the UK if you go down the County Court and get the very helpful leaflets and DIY (another great reason to D.I.V.O.R.C.E)
That your child may get twice as much pocket money, twice as many holidays, twice as many birthday pressies (unless your stoopid ex is still a dub)
That you dont stand a cat in hells chance if you married in Da Troof - the pressure of juggling it all is too much for a 19yr old to handle, even if neither of you is to blame still best to get divorced ASAP so you can both move on to a normal life. -

Are you a victim of the Sub Prime lending fiasco?
by katiekitten inive been reading some terrible reports about the american mortgage market, and the subprime mortgages aimed at people with poor credit ratings and poor ability to pay.
(and of course poor ability to understand complicated and deliberately obscure contracts).. frankly the whole thing is exploitation in the extreme, imo.
there was one report on the bbc about how poor black areas were targetted, and people were given an introductory offer of 1% and not told that this offer lasted only one month before ballooning to 17 or 18%.

Its so interesting to see opinions from people who have direct experience of this issue, im sure im getting a better picture here than the articles I read in the news.
"It takes two greedy people to make a good scam" - thats a great quote, and im sure this whole fiasco is down to lots of greedy people. I do think however, that lenders should be partly responsible as well as buyers.
Here in the UK there are laws that attempt to curb the worst excesses of financial institutions - such as outlandinsh APRs. Now why would the government want to do that if we truly believed in 100% Caveat Emptor? Surely because financial institutions can make spohisticated packages designed to deliberately obscure the issue and fool people (who whatever you think they should be, by and large are mainly ill-educated and easy to fool).
In addition in the UK a bank has to go to court to get an order to reposess a house. My friend worked in this department for a large UK bank and he told me that where banks had lent a ridiculously high loan to earnings ratios (1:8, 1:10, 1:11 etc) the court was refusing repossession because they said the bank should have known that person was likely to be unable to service such a debt. As a result banks in the UK are becoming more cautious about the ratios they lend (although there are still ways round this if both parties want to be greedy).
I have read the stories about greedy people getting caught up the the ARM mortgage boom and buying very expensive houses, but all the stories coming through in the press are of very poor neighbourhoods, and also predominantly black neighbourhoods where people have attempted to buy fairly humble houses that are now being reposessed. I see George Dubya has been asked to consider the problem, because I think it will affect lots of people who havent got into the mortgage trap, but who will soon be living in devastated neighbourhoods, or whose poperty value will be reduced.
Heres how its being reported in the British press, if you are interested:

I agree that the buyer should beware (caveat emptor) but I think there has been something fundamentally wrong with the SubPrime market.
Very low educational groups have been deliberately targetted, and Lawyers have said that the contracts have been deliberately made so complicated that even educated people cant work them out. In addition deliberate lies have been told to borrowers - such as they have been told the rate is 1% but not told that this rate would only last for a month. Also some subprime lenders have deliberately altered and inflated the income of borrowers on the application forms without telling the borrowers.
If everyone only knew the whole story, but know one wants to hear the truth.
I think this issue is going to have a huge impact on world economics, and there are companies selling SubPrime mortgages on the stock exchange now before going into liquidation. They are able to sell them as good debts because of the inflated incomes stated on mortgage application forms which make potential purchasers think the borrowers will be able to service the debts, when they cant.
Although I understand people should be money savvy, I think this issue is too big to just blame on borrowers, and its going to impact more than the people who took out bad mortgages.
There are people who deliberately targetted poor people and stupid people and who are responsible for something that is going to cause a huge amount of repossessions as the ballooning terms kick in.

Oil Nears $100/Barrel--What Do You Make of It?
by owenfieldreams inhttp://apnews.myway.com/article/20071101/d8skq1po0.html.
looks like we here in the good ole us of a may be paying $3.50/ gallon when spring hits next year, if this trend continues.
china's predominantly state-owned oil company surpassed exxon today in market value, and they are currently drilling not far off the coast of florida(by way of cuba).

Weve got to move away from being so oil dependent. We are killing the planet in double quick time, and the sooner oil runs out the better I say, because nothing else will force us to stop devastating our environment.
The sooner car manufacturers get their heads out of there arses are begin to address the problem the better.
