  What's missing from this forum is ....

  ... enough jws and non ex-jws to have a two sided debate that can give more depth than the current one sided debates that are typical of almost every thread apart from creation/evolution threads.

  these manage to polarise us in informative albeit heated debates.

  an argument should have a counter argument so that as much ground is covered as possible on both sides of the debate.

  Bicycling - A Dangerous Sport

  so, on tuesday afternoon i am driving in downtown austin.

  there was this car in front of me that must have been lost and was completely stopped.

  i decided i did not want to keep waiting behind him.

  You haven't driven in rush hour traffic in the Dallas area before have you?

  Looking at my location should confirm that, of course nowhere else in the world has traffic ? Obviously when I used to ride to work at Heathrow airport it was never busy. As I said I ride as far to the left (which would be the right in America as you drive on the wrong side of the road)as is safe (i.e the middle of the lane) strangely I tend to follow the UK highway code whilst doing so. As soon as every car driver overtakes properly rather than trying to squeeze past then I will change where I ride.

  Since I can't tell from looking how competent or considerate a driver is I have to ride as defensively as possible, I have been riding for a long time now and never had an accident which I think is largely due to defensive riding.

  i know, weve withheld the day and hour from you but as i mentioned, it is only for those in the extreme reaches in authority to know the exact hour.. i lay back on my seat in my vehicle, as i have many times before, and a presence appears before me like before, but this time is different.

  i feel my mind and body being filled with strength and vigor unlike before.

  My remark earlier -- and I think I was clear about this -- had to do with cyclists who hog the whole lane during rush hour traffic. I am not talking about a country road, but a 4-lane busy main street.

  So the problem isn't the speed but the fact that you have to overtake properly, what a shame! If you had ever ridden on a bike in traffic you would appreciate that it is only safe to overtake them as if they were another car. Riding in the centre of your lane is done to force motorists to overtake properly leaving enough space for the cyclist. The safest I feel is in the centre of my lane not in the pot-hole littered gutter, after all I have the right to use the road as a cyclist, car drivers don't, they have to have a licence.

  The fact that you aren't even complaining about this on country roads but on a multi-lane road makes it even worse, the other three lanes not enough for you?

  Why should it make a difference that it is rush hour?

  Hear hear to Bikerchic and Princess,

  As a cyclist and a Biker I have seen some truly appalling driving in my time and the excuse is always 'sorry mate I didn't see you' It's strange though that when other road users can kill you instantly you have the ability to see all of them, perhaps it's just down to paying attention.

  And as for the poster who complains about cyclists doing 25 in a 45, perhaps you ought to leave for work a bit earlier if one other road user can make you late. Or don't cylists have the right to use the roads where you live.

  I think the driving test should have a section where you have to ride a bicycle down busy roads just so you have an appreciation of how dangerous and scary it is even without people trying to kill you deliberately.

  Personally I would rather see cyclists allowed to ride on the pavement with pedestrians, at least if a cyclist runs a pedestrian over you aren't going to kill them.

  I like to give a cheery wave as I filter past stationary traffic, just to raise the blood pressure of all those road ragers sitting in their cars.

My lungs are filled with pure and refreshing oxygen, my chest begins to inhale and exhale moved by a force not of my own origin. I feel so much strength that I feel I can take on the world.

  So what had you been smoking?

  When you feel that " A huge and strong force manly in his nature" is that when the nurse comes in to give you the medication or is it when your cellmate gives you 'his' medication?

  Secularism vs Religion: Which can give society the best all round guide?

  i was always of the view that, without christianity vis a vis secularism to set some important ground rules that people are willing to abide by be it for the love of christ or fear of god's vengence, society would break down like soddom and gomorah and rome.

  that the rate of family break down would reach a threshold beyond which, society would not be sustainable as a sane unit in other words a disastrous scenario would ensue.

  the problem with this hypothesis is, i don't know of any secular societies to make my comparison with.
