I would only say to you that IF you decide to take this on, and do so without someone to provide a decent "father figure" then know that you have to take on that role, too, that it will be YOUR responsibility to show that little boy how to be a decent man, one who respects himself and others, particularly women, which you can show by always BEING a woman he can respect. Or, should it be a girl, vice versa - it will be YOUR responsibility to show that little girl how to be a decent woman, one who respects herself and others, particularly men, which, along with the things you would do to show a son respect for women, you can show by respecting men yourself.
This reminds of a book I happen to love called "Fatherless America".
My response is simple, a woman can not teach a man about being a man. I understand what you are saying here, but I have just worked with way too many children and adults with every type of social service issue you can imagine and I would say 90% of them had NO FATHER in their lives. When I counseled them, the overwhelming theme was the missing of having that father in their life, even when the mother had the best of intentions.
And this is not knocking the women who are raising their children, etc, but I have to tell you something, the woman I am today is a direct result of my father taking his role seriously and being in my life. He taught me things that my mother could not, he gave me that balance, he taught me strength, he taught me how to interact with another man, to trust it, to understand the fundamentals of having a man in my life that would be there for me through thick and thin. You can't knock that, every study proves that the most well rounded people have a two parent household or a father figure.
If you are coming into a situation with an option, why would you willingly discount the importance of a father figure?? This isn't a situation where someone accidently gets pregnant or someone loses their father through an accident, this is someone saying, "maybe a father is not important to raising a child because I just have this need to have a baby (no offense LouBelle)" and I strongly object to discounting the father. I have also seen women have three and four children, no father, for selfish reasons of thinking that this child was going to give the love that they lost in their life or fulfill some need and I have to tell, it just seems very selfish to me.
Now I don't want to debate this back and forth, but I saw that and I needed to say my thoughts on it.

How is your circle of friends?
by AK - Jeff ini have been blessed to come to know several posters here personally, and to be able to count them as friends.
i have phone conversations with several here from time to time also.
most of these are 'long distance relationships' due to the nature of the xjw beast, geographically, at least for me.

I love my circle of friends, I have a good deal of male friends, but also a nice group of female friends, friends I have had for many years. I am glad I came out of the JW when I did, because I was not really caught up in starting over, I left at a turning point in my life, that is not unlike most turning points for people right out of high school.
I love planning parties with friends, having cookouts, etc and my next one is just for my female friends, it's my "Sex & the City" party and it's going to be a blast. Since I have such a wide range of backgrounds of friends, I like that they can all bring a very ethnic dish to the party, plus all the regular american food. Lots of Cosmos plus all the Brazilian food, West African food, Pakistani food, and some Italian and Greek food, I can't wait...

Can any who grew up JW relate to this?
by Mickey mouse inconfession time!
i was raised in the troof and therefor never "chose" it.
i find it really hard to get my head around why anyone would ever join this organization as an adult.

Layla33
Oh I was raised in the "truth" and I can totally understand how someone can be swayed by it. You have to understand man's need to make sense of the world around them, God and religion is a great explanation for things that make no sense. Questions like "why do we die", "why is there so much sickness and unhappiness in the world", "how did we get here"? And here comes a JW giving this idea that HEY, YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER! And you have GUARANTEED FRIENDS!, and WE ARE ALWAYS SO HAPPY AND LOVING!
Oh I can totally understand how someone can get caught up, just like I understand how people rationalize it to this day. I may not agree (like I really don't), but I do understand.

Athiests please answer these questions
by Mrs Smith ini'm not trying to pick a fight i was just sitting at my desk pondering on some threads on jwd and i would very much like this question answered.. why is it that athiest often (not always) direct their argument for athiesism towards christians?
why not direct your argument towards buddists or muslims or even new-agers?
i mean they also believe in a higher power so why is it that only christains seem to get knocked?
-
Layla33
What I am seeing is that atheism means different things to different people, the same way I have met Christians and their interpretations are different. Even those that say, they believe there is a God, and that there is a Jesus, but have different ideas on the death penalty, sexual issues, abortion. I guess my personal observation is that people interpret their belief system very differently and that we can't just go by a title they declare and define it solely on that.
Again, very interesting discussion, and enjoyable.

The Mother of American Atheism was very hateful, ignorant and attacked people to the point that she was murdered.
Madeline Murray O'haire was not the mother of american atheism, by a long shot. She was before my time, but she's never been someone I looked up to or even thought much about. At any rate, she was murdered over a very valuable collection of gold coins, not ideology. It was about money.
I have heard her referred as such because she has did create the American Atheists organization and was the person who challenged a lot of religious practices in school, etc. I realize how she was murdered, but I believe based on what I have read and seen on forensic files, her nastiness and her attacking nature made her a target by some, not saying it was directly related to her murder, but I think the way she lead her life made her somewhat of a target.
atheism is just another interpretation of the world around us.
I just find that atheism seems to try to suggest they are the opposite of religious, when it seems there are a few very obvious similarities, it just does not believe in a divine
Lack of belief is not a belief. Religion is largely defined by belief in the supernatural, the antithesis of atheism. It is true that there are activists promoting atheism. I could even be defined as such. But there are a great deal of others that just aren't interested in the discussion.
Okay, this is where I have issues, not enough to start a big debate over it, but that's my current observation. Why do atheists continually deny they have any belief at all? Isn't rejecting religion a belief? Isn't the rejection of the supernatural a belief? Isn't believing that everything has a logical natural explanation a belief? I think, well rather know, that there are religious people (whatever that ideology may be) that aren't interested in a discussion and perfectly happy to live their lives without making a big ruckus about it. Anyway, it's been interesting reading the thoughts of atheists on here something I tended not to do. It has been enlightening.

Jehovah's Witnesses can celebrate Christmas now!
by sacolton in... birthdays too!.
well, not yet, but if the governing body decides that it's okay to celebrate christmas and birthdays .... how do you suppose the typical jw would feel ... especially those who lived their whole life being told to not celebrate and.
wishing they could?.

Do you think the average JW would say, "What?!! No way!" or just suddenly accept it and applaud?
They routinely keep falling for the Armaggedon is around the corner, completely accepted the 1975 "explanation". Accepted the The UN hypocrisy, the blood debacle hook, line and sinker ; if some very zealous "spiritual" brother came up with very emotional and supposedly NEWFOUND (jw's favorite coined term) understanding, why wouldn't they?
